  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

cloudy Bomb EVF picture

I just compared the old EVF to the Bomb to the 5" on the Epic. Wasn't a big difference between the old EVF and the Bomb but both of them had less contrast/saturation than the LCD.

so. RED Techs? Time for someone to speak up before this takes on a Life of its Own?

Mine just arrived, don't have my Epic yet so can't know if I have a problem or not. Little worried about this, but have faith that Red will fix it in a future upgrade.

Hey Mark,

Don't have the R1 here, only the Epic. Old EVF definitely working on the Epic, and I've tested several friend's old EVFs on the Epic and found they all have worked so far.

Started with the 5" touchscreen, then hotswapped to the old EVF, then to the Bomb EVF. To my eye the 5" was the clearest, the old EVF didn't have as much saturation or contrast, and the Bomb had ever so slightly less than the old EVF but not by much. The Bomb was slightly brighter than the old EVF. Bomb definitely had the blacks in the menu, and the color chart was vibrant.

Hi Jim,

I'm not sure if the old EVF works on the EPIC yet, but try this...

Put the Bomb on the REDONE and then the OLD EVF on the red one.... see what you see.
then put the BOMB straight onto the EPIC... Massive difference..

I know of cases where this has been the decisive point between buying Epics or Alexas.
And I have kept my Old EVF handy for this exact reason.

The Bomb has basically stayed in its box so far, but I'll be playing a bit with it just over xmass.
I think - as playback is now working - getting the full potential out of the bomb would be a very good thing for all us non-3D guys out here... :)

I'll be honest, I haven't followed the entire thread, but my experience has been this:
When I swap between the LCD and the Bomb EVF my bomb EVF looks milky, and even worse, a sort of reddish tint.

However if I black balance with the bomb EVF attached, the blacks are rich again, and tint is gone.
But as you know this is a 20 minute process and not something you want to do unless needed, so mostly I use the LCD.

Needs to be tested... What happens with the LCD image after such a black ballance?

Dont Panic guys... The EVF is not that bad... The image to the EVF just needs a contrast tune up. Or maybe RED gives us our own EVF contrast controls to make our own blacks blacker...

But the EVF is still worth owning.

Thank God!
I mean Thank Red!

heh heh heh

I know David Mullen used the epic with Bomb EVF on "Big Sur".. wonder if he had this problem?

slightly off topic:
will scarlets ever be able to have the lcd touch and evf at same time without a pro I/O ?

I'm a Stage 4 owner to be, so have only used a rental on a six day shoot back in September and I remember specifically that the Bomb EVF image left a lot to be desired in terms of contrast and saturation... I sure hope they get onto this asap in the new year!

Ive rented more then 20+ different EPIC/EVF combos around the world and also own 3 mysef... ( 1 being only 2 weeks old) they all have the same flat contrast milky look...
I'm yet to see one that has rich blacks...
If anyone has a Bomb EVF out there that has rich dark blacks, take a photo through the eye pices and show us.

Red have PM'd me, the ball is in motion :)) let's hope they don't think we are all dreaming.... :)))

Happy new year all.....

PS... I still like my EVF's alot... I cannot shoot without them. :))) So they are not as bad as it sounds. small tune up is all it needs.

Milky EVF blacks were fixed with the "dark detail" function in the Red One menus ...that isn't enabled in current Epic firmware.
But I have an original Red EVF for sale cheap if anyone is interested!
