Any one else have this problem? The picture in my new bomb EVF is really cloudy - it looks like a flashed photo. Running 1.7.10 release build, 5.0" lcd touchscreen looks great, and this is with the brightness all the way up or down....thanks guys!

I think we all have the same problem... I have used about 20 different Epic / Bomb EVF combos all around the world now (RENTALS). All have had milky blacks.
I own 3 Bomb Evf's and 3 Epics, they are all the same... milky. (but maybe yours is worse) ... can you send an image, photography inside you evf.

But here is a funny thing, One day we hot swapped from the touch screen to Bomb EVF (most times we turn the camera off to swap). this one time the image in the EVF looked perfect!... nice rich blacks!, looked great!!!, I thought Beautiful!!!! its fixed!! ... but when we changed batteries and restarted the camera, it went back to nomral with the milky blacks.

Not sure what the reason is for this gamma setting in the EVF's being so flat with the blacks so bright... but now that I have seen rich blacks in the EVF (due to a glitch), I know it's possible now that some day soon the RED engineers will work it out and give us a rich image out of the EVF.

Here is an image I sent RED 6 months ago, It think its being addressed hopefully.. :)) When the blacks look good, the EVF looks like your looking through glass its so sharp!...
Will the best EVF ever once they sort the gammas out.

awww MAN..... mine's still sitting in box (unopened, awaiting scarlet). Dropped the Big Dime because I want a no-compromise VF - like my old Sony BetaCam(!). Hope I haven't made a mistake!? Thanks for update Mark.

I wouldn't worry mate... Compared to a SONY view finder, this thing is so sharp, You can pull focus with the EVF so much easier than looking through the 5 inche or some onset monitor....you will think your looking through glass... The sony Viewfinder has huge pixels, they are rubbish! compared to the Bomb.

The milky blacks can be fixed, I'm sure of it. (But thats a RED question) then you will have the best of the best...!
Not to mention it's small & Light!

Mark,

This is exactly the same as mine...thanks for making me not panic....any follow up from Red when you raised the issue? They told me there should be no issue with the image.....

Adrian

I really hope that Red is not quiet about this because
it CAN"T be fixed.

I wish they would chime in more often on posts like this.

So, Mark, did they say they can fix your EVF?

I am keeping one of the original Red EVFs just in case....

I would...

Like I said we had a glinch with ours when we did a hot swap and the image in the EVF looked great!!!! but after a re-start we were back to milky.
So after seeing this, I'm sure they can do it.
Question is, why does the Colour chart that pops up during start up look so vibrant but the pictures and blacks don't when the image appears..

No RED have not shared in any formation with me about fixing the milky blacks... Maybe they have gone cold on it.
Lets hope they are reading this and re-action a fix. or at least some EVF colour / gamma control so we can do our own settings... that would be good.

Most likely a calibration issue on the current firmware builds. I don't use the BWF, though we have two of them. really waiting for the PRO IO to get the system up and running.

Hopefully they can and should fix this problem soon. One reason I hardly use the Bomb. No way I can judge color or exposure. On the Red one it was OK, but it is shame what you get out of an Epic. If you put an Epic next to an Alexa and and have someone compare the two images only by looking through the EVF yhey all would choose Alexa since that EVF is so much better. More reason to fix this.....

Exactly! My director on The Red Robin looked in my viewfinder and the first thing he said was..."It's not gonna look like that right?"....I immediately took the EVF off and put it back in the box.

true...

Perhaps this is just an issue with the output settings on the EPIC and not the EVF settings.

So.....does the EPIC have a setup on or off sort of switch/setting?

As in, does the EPIC allow you to adjust the black level for the output to the EVF?

I assume that Mark has obviously tried this...to no avail.

The interesting thing is that the black in the menus is good but the picture section is washed out, so it's not just an overall setting.

That's exactly my thought! The Menu Blacks are really good... and the colour chart also.. Carry those blacks and colours into the image on the screen and we are happy.
