  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any other "film" names you'd like to see on that list, Jim ? :-)

Yes and now the question is what lenses did they use and are there any similarities? As I am always doing it anyway, let's see how the numbers shake down with the help of IMDB "Technical Specifications."

NOTE: Almost 90% of these films selected a 2.35:1 aspect ratio (Widescreen) for their final output.

Simon Duggan. "Knowing". One of the 1st RED features. "The Great Gatsby". One of the best features.
Knowing was good - a surprising ending, but good. The Great Gatsby is one of my favourite novels. Can't wait for this film.

Peter Deming.
Because Mulholland Drive is my favourite David Lynch film, it will always be Deming's best, no matter what he does from now on! :-P

LONG LIVE THE RED NATION!!! -DAN FRENKEL / DP/PRODUCER

Maybe if Dragon improves highlight roll off, and exceeds Alexa in the ever argued "film look", perhaps you can make a run at Mr. Deakins. That's a real long-shot. But that would be the holy grail of a cinematographer to add to the list, in my opinion.

Let's not forget PSY's “Gangnam Style!”

OH JESUS, I HOPE YOU GUYS ARE KIDDING.... IM GOING TO BE REALLY DEPRESSED IF RED OWNERS THINK THAT G.S. WAS GOOD! LOL

Not a cinematographer; I am so happy to see RED associated with films like Hitchcock, The Artist, Prometheus... So happy to have seen movies like District 9, Che, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. My personal RED favorite, The Social Network.

You just gotta love blockbusters like Pirates and Spidey looking better than they ever have.

I am fond of Knowing, so early on.

Too many to mention.

But the real feat is the million projects and their zillion petabytes of RAW footage, in such a short time. BOOM!! ... RED.

would be super cool to have a book on RED cinematography ... with pictures of the rigs in those guys movies, iconic shots, and interviews with them talking about shooting digital (ie): lenses, rigs, workflow, vfx integration, color science, etc...

You're right! That would be REALLY cool! I hope someone does this indeed!

I have to say... I have read MANY posts, right here on this forum of many slamming Red Digital Cinema and their cameras for their look of "skin tone." Many believed that as long as the movie was highly stylized, it was fine, but that other "German cameras" look better in straight up "realistic" skin tones.

I will say this... I saw Flight last Wednesday... I was blown away by the skin tones! That movie isn't set in space, nor does it have pirates or comic book heroes, nor does it have a highly stylized look... it is a straight forward drama. I thought Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle and the entire cast looked phenomenal! I hope that shuts the nay sayers up!

I came from the Sony world... I've used just about every Sony camera going. I personally think my Epic looks better. I realize this is a business with many personal tastes... and this is mine.

I recently got into a spirited discussion about Alexa V. Epic. Another DP told me "For starters, I live in LA... NO ONE wants Epic. They all want Alexa. Arri OWNS the "professional" market. Period. It makes a better picture, is easier to use, it's the hands down winner... No one cares about resolution in LA, man... it's all about the image, the skin tones! However, I own both; they're both just tools... you, as the DP have to make the art. The creative is all up to you! Just think of these two cameras as nothing more than a hammer and you're the sculptor..." OK... let's examine that... Micheal Angelo couldn't sculpt David with just ANY hammer... he had to have the RIGHT hammer! I hope you understand what I'm saying... a hammer is NOT just a hammer! In the right hands... I'm sure it is... some of the names on that esteemed list could shoot a killer product with a Flip camera, I'm sure... but if they have the RIGHT camera... look at what they can produce.

I think Flight should dispel all the crap that Epic can't produce good skin tones. There was a vast array of skin tones in that film as well! Everyone looked terrific. I think if folks are honest... and see what Epic is truly capable of... it's game over. Resolution DOES matter... and in the coming months as 4K truly takes hold, I think you'll see a lot of unhappy Alexa owners. Last I heard, Arri doesn't offer a trade in for their cameras, and those owners will need to purchase something with a higher resolution; something their camera manufacture doesn't offer.

People who say Epic, Scarlet or even RED ONE can't do skin tones have to be color blind! I have been in film 25 years and have never seen a better reproduction of the look of film on any digital camera other than RED. Hands down!!!!
