  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cinec 2010: Interview with Ted Red, showing off working Epic...

Thanks for sharing Tobias, and always appreciated of any Fellow Reduser when sharing related info,
but I would not worry about any type of Artifacts at all, as it is way better then n90% of the Videos out there,
and the setting of the interview is nice and steady as it should be, so great job...BUT..

THE AUDIO!! The audio should always be the second most important part of any interview ;)

Thanks Ketch. Heheh, yeah, the audio... Well... I'll bring a Lavalier next time. Or an additional guy. Audio is the best I could get with an MKE-400 plus an H4n. The noise level really was quite high. But hey, learned something I can improve next time... :)

Would be good to know what the pistol grip battery endurance is when the camera is in recording mode.

Very nice interview.

Also is the first time I have seen 1) the touchscreen in action, 2) the battery being removed from the side handle. Awesome.

Also I love the idea of stills tagging. That was the first I had heard of it - yes my eyes sparkled and my ears pricked up.

Thanks Tobias.

Thanks guys. Michael, what I can tell you is that the battery died after approx. 20 min into the interview, and Ted told me he turned the camera on 15 - 20 min before that. Don't know how on-time changes when recording.

Tim, yeah right? Stills tagging - really cool. And the touchscreen is cool, too. Also, you'll be surprised at the screen quality - personally, I find it hard to compare to the current Red monitors. A little glossy, but really nice. Can anyone say something about resolution? Ted didn't have the exact numbers at hand.

Oh, also - Ted did confirm that Yes, they still are making a mattebox. He had to think about that one a little bit, though... :)

Thanks to Ted and to the SwissFilmmakers.com team for the interview - it's always great to see the camera working. The touch-screens look to be a treat.

Yes it is...

...and it's pretty sick when you see an EPIC under REDmote control across the width of one of RED's sound stages.

But can we get it wired too? Wireless doesn't work everywhere.

Please? :-)

At IBC we had the EPIC wired to a screen at the Band Pro booth, and the battery was running around 30 minutes, give or take 5. So that's pretty close to what you saw.

i like that smile!

Thanks Tobias.
I only wonder how tiny fingers we will need for s tiny 2.8" LCD touchscreen?

Tobias, what kind of mic did you use? Seriously, sound was terrible. Composition was fine. If you could do it all over again, tell us what not to do so that we can learn from your mistakes.

On a positive note, I learned about "Ladykracher" thanks to your video.

It's pretty cool to see Ted playing with it and changing settings and such... actually demonstrating, rather than just showing...

The stills tagging feature is really cool.

I imagine the stills tagging feature will be used to tag more than stills. It might be used as a quick first flag for other issues, pros and cons, etc,.

Can the stills' tag be applied by a cable release or remotely, without touching the camera release button?

Thanks so much Tobias. Very curious to see how it looks and the
quality of footage that comes from Epic + Cooke 5i lenses also.

Epics seems to be getting closer and closer ... :thumbup1:

Jonathan,

if you can't afford Leica C set (must buy set but not individual lenses) maybe you can get some of Leica Summilux M (f.1.4) per individual lens.

Summilux-M-21mm-front.jpg

Leica Summilux-M 1:1.4/21mm ASPH: EUR 4.980,00 Austrian 20% taxes included or EUR 4.150,00 excl. VAT.

FF35mm, Epic 5K 100% ready, weight: approx. 580 g.

Also Leica M to Epic and Scarlet S/35 lens adapter should be very easy made by any third party vendor like a PS Technik, SCREEN PLANE, Denz,...

Excellent point Sanjin. Considering that the glass and speed of the M lenses
is still going to be amazing, and they will also work with the M9 for
incredible leica quality stills, I think those will be a smart investment.

Do you know of any adaptors that will currently allow you to use Leica M
lenses with the Red One? Or were you speaking about the future?

Imagine the low light ability of the Epic + the Leica Noctilux .95! :001_tt1:

You're welcome guys. Had a blast doing it.

Tanks Tobias.
I only wonder how tiny fingers we will need for s tiny 2.8" LCD touchscreen?

Heheh, that's what I thought. From what I can tell, it's pretty responsive even with big fingers though. Personally, I think I'll use the RedMote more often.

Tobias, what kind of mic did you use? Seriously, sound was terrible. Composition was fine. If you could do it all over again, tell us what not to do so that we can learn from your mistakes.

On a positive note, I learned about "Ladykracher" thanks to your video.

Oh c'mon, yeah the sound is not great, but I've heard worse... :) Only way to get good sound is to use a Lavalier I guess. Or have someone holding a mic directly to the talking head. I couldn't do that, had to concentrate on operating the cam and interviewing. MKE 400 + H4n.

So, anyone interested in doing a little noise reduction? I'm not much of a sound guy myself and don't have a lot of time right now...

It's pretty cool to see Ted playing with it and changing settings and such... actually demonstrating, rather than just showing...

The stills tagging feature is really cool.

It really was cool. And yes, I love the tagging feature, great idea.

it seems that epics are up and running as well as scarlets(seen Jared's pic yet?), i'm wondering why there isn't a little more excitement in recon lately. Usually a little silence leads to good things.
