I'm sure some have had the privilege to see this at Cine Gear, but for those who haven't been able to see the presentation by Panavision go if you can!

Red's 8k Panavised Weapon is on display with Panavision's 70 Primos.

There's a two minute reel on a massive 8k display with a live timeline playback.

Just putting this out there for the people interested in seeing the 8k Weapon and 8K footage.

Truly remarkable, even if not for the home enthusiast. Got a look behind the curtain as well. Custom built computer, with an output of 16 cables to the display, all requiring perfect transmission and sending a total 4GB/second to the display as well. So much bespoke kit. The Low Light OLPF was used, BTW.

Michael Cioni was so congenial and informative, volunteering a fair bit of the history of the project. One can readily appreciate that 8K footage, will have soooo little noise, at, say a 4K finish, that this will have a rather quick acceptance, in the community.

Thank you very much

Fury

This was a treat to see. It's really tremendous what's going on at the Light Iron/Panavision booth at Cine Gear 2015.

Michael Cioni did a small presentation about what is exactly going on here. What we are seeing is uncompressed 8K playback of RED Weapon 8K Dragon footage through a fairly customized Pablo Rio setup (as Fury mentioned).

Behind the curtain you see this:

The custom box consists of several NVIDIA Quadros, 8X SDI to DVI converters, 10,000 RPM RAID, etc... This was driving the 8K display, which is a prototype and about 110" if I recall correctly.

We often get lost in the weeds regarding much of this. But uncompressed 8K playback is insanity and amazing in 2015. And we are in the very infant stages of 8K production. Heck, you could argue not even that.

Michael shot this on the Panavision Primo 70 Series lenses mostly at T3 ISO 800 on RED Weapon 8K Dragon at 8K 2:1. This is pretty much a rental only situation as the 70 Series glass requires the PV 70mm Lens Mount and a very special "Glass Plug" to go in front of the OLPF.

These PV 70 Series lenses are optimized for about 7mm worth of glass in front of the sensor. Dragon's OLPF is approximately 3mm, Panavision adds a 4mm Glass Plug into the mix and you are getting the optimal image quality.

One notable shot I commented on to Michael is the extreme wide shot from the helicopter of a few hikers on top of a mountain. There's so much detail, color, and focus on our subjects that an EWS like this actually holds the audience's interest and you can visibly see your subjects. It was tremendous. I can't wait for 8K Vista. Super excited.

Very cool!

What's the data rate of the Weapon 8K? Wouldn't it be the same if it was 6K 4:1 on a Mini Mag? Or are they using different "faster" media other than Mini Mags to record 8K? Really interested in the compression and data rate settings for R3Ds at 8K.

Wow...that PL mount looks insane...

No its a larger than normal PV mount designed for 65mm shooting assuming this Weapon has been modified by Panavision to use their Primo 70s. Got to use the Primo 70s on Pana modified Dragons on a movie and frankly it was glorious overkill but on the 8K Weapon it will make alot of sense. Panavision has even built some fast Primo 70 zooms !

This was shot at REDCODE 5:1 at 8K 2:1 with a few slightly overcranked shots in there at a different REDCODE compression ratio. We know the data rate of the bandwidth through the Carbon Fiber Weapon is 300MB/s.

Epic Dragon's internal bandwidth is around 200MB/s.

Yeah, Michael stopped me for going anywhere as soon as I stopped by the Pana booth, the show was just about to start, seen the 8k presentation on a 96" 8k Monitor was a mind-blowing reality, Weapon VV & 70mm Pana Primo's I guess it is a killer combo... So much more to come on Large format lenses I can't wait!

Nice seen you again Phil!

the lenses are nuts... I'm about to jump the fence at Paramount and pay stage 31 a quick nightly visit... ;-))))

this glimpse of 8K looked nice but the (clear) limiting factor was the screen... as Phil mentioned its a custom build Chinese prototype, they didn't calibrate it (who knows what CMS if any it has), and obviously there's no 8K LUT box... and then you gotta live with whatever performance this screen gives you: ghosting, motion jitter etc

it looked good, but knowing this was 8K VV W w/ PV glass, this is probably jaw dropping on a really good PJ...

MAN! These guys are bringing a Rail Gun to an AK-47 gunfight!

though this is very interesting, and i read every bit of Ketchs FB post about it... i still am more interested in how 8k will work with lenses i can actually buy to own...the cheap stuff like Xenons, Cp2s, compact zooms, etc... its cool panavision is into this, bought light iron, has their stuff together but for me personally i am interested in the ability to shoot with it on my own without the excessive rates associated with rental only business models. the glass is amazing and all, and the combination is really cool but id love to know more about lens coverage with the sets i listed plus canon cine lenses, so that for us non top tier guys we know the deal. I'm sure given enough time and patience this information will come out, and in the mean time ill happily wait but a major thing for me personally is i haven't yet invested heavily in S35 so i am still just trying to figure out what the hell to do with glass to own atm..

ps its also really interesting to see panavision working with red so much on this vs the Imax Alexa 65 partnership... lots of good options on the high high end now... and its interesting as hell i just wonder if ill ever personally have the satisfaction of working with this stuff so for me the cheap stuff is my primary interest lol

Awesome, thanks Phil! Always have the answer!

Ship me my 8K Weapon! I'll review it... maybe... probably not. But I'll be sure to play with it. Actually if I had one here to play with, you guys probably wouldn't hear or see a peep out of me for a while. ;)
