Canon 7/63 S16 zoomlens, perfect and clean image on S16 film gives
a lot of chromatic aberration (green and magenta in the out of focus parts of the image on a long lens and clor fringing on wide angle) on the Red.
Lens is checked / back focus checked and looks fine in projection.

Red used in 2K set up with build 15

Any ideas ?

Get a real lens...

Jim

lol lmao
no disrespect eyemark
just funny
and funny to see jim finally speak his mind
instead of all the times im sure he has to bite his tongue
intstead of letting some redusers and redwhiners have it

nice to have some comic relief as well
this site has gotten way too technical

in the beginning it was about building a camera jim and alot of other people
like me and half the redusers dreamed of, and then there was the nonbelieving haters and faithless redheads, and now that the dream camera has landed several eagles into the first reserve holders theres alot of technical overflow, the camera promised has gone above and beyond expectations

above and beyond ;;;; )

thanks for the quick reply; I'm not complaining al I do is wonder why ?

so what zoomlenses do work in 2k, thanks for the input

That's funny, Jim. Sorry eyemark, I am sure it was well intended. But, you got a perfect and accurate answer right from the horses mouth.

I encourage you to investigate this forum more thoroughly. Good place to start would be in the lens section (where this thread belongs):

My favourite threads are by Evin Grant:

and

Heaps of good info and tests there. Good luck getting a REAL lens, LOL :sarcasm:

Hai Mark,

Same in english,

No chromatic aberration mistakes with Red One , just tested among with 2 HD camera's 3xccd wich work with a Prisma and can give chromatic aberration mistakes . Lens was 32mm superspeed. We did notmake a test with a zoomlens sorry. Monday i can do the test with the 18-50 zoomlens van RED. I let you know. With kind regards, Robert M. Berger N.S.C.

Welcome to RedUser, Eyemark :bye2: !! Sorry to hear your Canon S16 zoom doesn't make the grade :-( I also noticed a tiny amount of chromatic aberration with Cooke S4s (only noticeable on things like focus/test charts, completely unnoticeable in real world images).

This seems to happen with 35mm stills lenses on digital stills bodies too. I had a Nikon 500mm f4P manual focus lens on my F5 film body that was stunning, but on my D200 it had lots of CA. Just seems to be to do with the different way film and chips take in the light. Check out http://www.naturfotograf.com/index2.html for lots of detailed info on Nikon lenses esp. on digital bodies and many of the comments may well apply to the RED sensor too.

eyemark... my apologies if my reply sounded a bit harsh. I have that same lens and used to use it on my A-Minima (back when I shot film). For such a big price-tag, it disappoints. Maybe my harshness was a bit directed at myself for owning it? In fairness to Canon and other lenses made for film cameras, they were not specifically designed for digital. And there is a big difference. That particular lens, though, is just not going to hold up on a RED ONE unless the two of us just have the only bad ones in the universe.

Hi Mark,

I have a Canon 8-64 and hardly any CA. Canon S16 Zooms are among the very best (and don't believe Jim too much - he is surfing is personal lens freak-wave).

Regards,

Hans

Hans... hehe. My own personal lens "freak-wave" (can't believe you said that) consists of over 500 lenses (not counting any RED lenses). That collection includes a full set of Cooke S4s, several Zeiss, Angenioux, Leica, Canon, Nikon, etc. Much of the glass I own is wonderful and I'd be happy to tell you which ones "are among the very best"... but this particular lens does not fall in the "great" category.

So far I have not seen that on my 7-63 but I will do another test this weeknd and see if I have the 3rd bad one in the universe. I do agree that I like the 8-64 more than the 7-63....
Sorry Mark, I am really busy , will try to call you next week...

cheers

Over 500 lenses? I'd call that a lens freak-tsunami.

Jim, thanks for the explanation

This afternoon we de did some grading on the scratch and I have to admit I made a mistake.
I was fooled by the rec 709 preview on the camera with to much color in it and now that I've seen the results in camera rgb I'm really impressed, wide open there is some aberration but at T4 I think it is acceptable for HD. (do think at 2k the image has to much noise but let's wait for build 16)
Reason for only testing the 7/63 is because we were shooting a commercial on Sony HD and had the Red next to it to test workflow etc.

I'll be doing some more testing on my Zeiss HS set and 11-110 next week.

Started counting my lenses, only 48 ;)

That lens is gathering dust right at the back of Jim's 500 lens bat-cave

It's interesting how much the 709 output exacerbates chromatic aberration. I've done several jobs with Cooke S4s where the director [a whuffo to cinematography] asked me what all the green and magenta lines were for. Were they to indicate high-contrast areas? Nope. They were just the lens's flaws being brought out and dumped on the screen.

It's always a nice relief when the CA isn't as bad in the file as it was on the monitor. That said, if it was on the monitor... it's in the file. It just may not be as dramatic.

Hey Jim do you have any advice for me? I am looking for the fastest and most compact zoom to use with the Red One for lightweight doc/run and gun stuff. Image quality is not important, the most important thing is the fstop and the length/weight of the zoom lens.

For S16 2K or S35 4K?
For 16, we will soon try our 9.5-57 f1.6 angenieuxs - they are ultra light and ultra compact.
