Checking interest for 4k Skyworth LED TV Group Buy

John,
These models are not available in the US, so going to their US office wouldn't do anything as they are not here. The 4k models are only available in China. Skyworth USA will only have the units once they pay the certification fees and go through the US government testing required before they can be sold here. I asked if they had any on display here is the US or at their distributor and their answer was they are not available outside of China.

Thanks for coordinating this. I'll wait for now, but seriously considering if there's a second group buy. Keep us posted!

will do. Hopefully these end up being a good deal, either way we can at least see our images in 4k for once.

Would it be possible to have someone in china from our forum here to take a look, test, and give us a report.

Just a suggestion.

There for sale in China so if someone is there they can check them out....

Tempting, but I wonder how long it will take to get the REDRay (I haven't ordered yet.) :-( Hmmmmm.

Matt,
Looking good.
If this group buy is going to go, can you see if they will allow other sizes in the mix as well ?
It seems that there would be at least 30 real takers on the deal fro R.U. . Probably 100 if we can get someone in China to look at one!

yeah I'll see about mixing sizes in the group buy. I wish I knew someone who lived in China, would make this all a lot easier. Hopefully we can get a decent discount too. That would make it that much better.

What are the legalities of importing a large number of electronic items that are not electrically approved?
Whilst there is saftey in importing a low number of something that isnt approved locally does the same apply if you import 50 items?

My experience with the Chinese fringe branded sets is that build quility and QA is far more hit and miss than a large brand and the feature set is very limited, ie you can't turnoff dynamic motion processing or control detail levels.

What are the door to door shipping costs to Europe USA or Australia?

It is laughable that the manufacturers are saying viewing distance is 3 meters... there will be bugger all difference between HD and 4k in percieved resolution at this distance form a relativel small 50 inch set.
Of course it has a use as a monitor viewed from a meter.

Hisense have announced a 50 inch set for USA and Australia due early 2013.

I'll sign up if it can be delivered to my door for under $1k.

I spoke with Hisense and the US model won't be available until late next year. They don't even have a release date as of yet...

Risk management

Risk management

IF we can work out a deal with Skyworth, how soon could we have monitors in hand? In another 6 months I expect far more straightforward buying options for 4K displays at all levels of quality with proper testing and review info readily available.

I think you have to go into this expecting the picture quality to be good in some respects and poor in others, kind of like buying a low cost off brand LCD panel from a big retailer on Black Friday. Once there are more options for affordable 4K (UHD) monitors with decent IQ on the shelf I could see the Skyworth becoming a big piece of screen real estate for menus/histos/palettes - IF - there is a viable way to connect it to a GPU.

The biggest risk I see is big delays between payment and delivery and/or connectivity issues that render the unit useless with 4K sources like the RedRay, AJA card, BM card, ATI 7970, etc.

I'm not trying to derail the thread, just suggesting that in order to get a reasonably large group of RedUsers to throw down there needs to be some way of controlling some of the biggest risk factors. Getting the monitor, hooking it up and finding the image isn't very good falls under "you got what you paid for". Not getting it at all, not getting it for many months, not being able to get an image at all or only at odd refresh rates, etc are different risks than simple IQ deficiencies.

Cheers - #19

+1.
