Hello

Im buying my first Red camera and even though this new one is very cheap compared to other cameras, its still lots of money and i would like to keep the price down as much as possible. If i have understood it right the camera can be operated through Wifi and thus i can use a random monitor?

The camera is going to be mounted on my Dji Ronin and powered through the d-tap connection(though it seems like i have to upgrade the battery since red cameras drain much power apparently). So given this information, what modules am i required to buy?

I would get the jet pack. Apparently there is a little thing to old a HDMI wireless in place in the back of it...
But I would also get the small touch screen. A red camera is not really a camera without the touch as I see it. Some things you need it for as of now, like calibrating gyros, something you would like to do if on a gimbal.
And that screen is possibly small enough to sit on top of you camera even when on the gimbal and it´s not to pricy.

But I would wait just a little. Soon the Vlock module comes, then plenty of people will sell the base modules that where included in the upgrades since those two overlap with each other. So I think in a couple of weeks when the Vlock is out then you can pick up a base Oi for very little. also XL batteries, chargers etc. I think then a lot will let go of such stuff. I might be one of those.

I think its worth getting a package if you don't own any more dsmc2 bodies.
Because Raven $5950 + 1x 120GB $850 + 4.7" monitor $1450 + ET vlock $900 + red station $195 = $9345
for a few hundred more with a package you get the base IO Vlock or the jetpack.

You can try to go cheaper finding a used red monitor and using the easy top from Wooden camera..but dont know how much this might save you.

Hope this helps

Card reader $150?

seems like you should be getting the jetpack pkg, that's probably the cheapest too.

Again wait a little when the vlock module comes out pretty much all upgraded users will sell their base Io and Xl modules as most dont use them. For a raven that is a pretty killer combo.

Thanks for the answers

But basically the only module that is required for gimbal(ronin) use is the jetpack as it has all the necessary connections?

V mounts, v mount io, media, reader, fool control, cheap monitor? That's a cheap package

Before monitor and v mounts, this is still about $9000, right?

$6000 brain
$1900 I/o module
$850 120GB
$195 reader

Feels like a wash compared to the v lock I/o package which only lacks the v mounts, plus package comes with AC adapter and handle and genuine red touch screen for $10000 all told.

I've been trying to scheme cheaper builds but I don't think they really exist. You basically have to buy almost everything in the packages offered as far as I can tell if you're starting out with your first Red camera. Maybe you can do something with Fool control (I'm still learning about it) so you can get a larger 3rd party monitor, but that seems about it at the same price as the packages.

i think the brain comes with an AC adapter, but i agree, especially if you want a 120 card. i personally dont, i need 512s, but i still save money if i buy the pkg and sell the 120. though if a case is involved that changes everything, bumps up the value about $400.

The general consensus is to go with a red touch monitor to control the camera. So I'm not sure how great it would be to get a 3rd party monitor as your primary. But I agree with you, every time I'm trying to cut costs I end up thinking it doesn't make sense. Bite the bullet now, be somewhat future proof with most of your accessories, and you'll probably be happy for it in the long run. At least that's what I'm telling myself.

I think the cheapest setup would be:

Raven brain: 6000 euro
Jetpack: 950 euro
mini mag: 850 euro

Total: 7800 euro
(power through ronin/gimbal and 3rd party monitor)

But i think i will go for the brain only and then find used modules/accessories later.
