  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

CF Reader = MUST HAVE

yeah brook, what about that! huh! HUH!

(we're still being sarcastic.. right?)

If I suggested people jump off a cliff... I'd like to think they'd use their own judgment before making any weighty decisions. If somebody actually built their own CF module - after reading my post full of winks, smiles, warnings about warranty status and a generally self-aware vibe - and ruined a shoot... wow.

But ultimately, even if somebody was thinking about using that "solution," this thread would sure deter them, eh? Because no matter how you cut it, that part does look very similar to a certain widely available one... and if anything, hearing that it was tested and rejected by you guys at RED will actually deter somebody from making that mistake themselves. And it wouldn't have happened if I hadn't cracked a little wise. :)

So yeah, I'm sorry if I caused any confusion over that, but I was very much kidding. I don't mean to tick anybody off... quite the opposite.

Hate to throw you under the bus Brook.. but people have followed your "disclaimed" advice and swapped out critical parts of the camera/drives and we have had to deal with the problems that ensued.. One Car commercial lost some footage because of your modifications you did to their drives. Just like two compact flash cards can look the same, two electronic boards can look the same. As Deanan advised.. its a really bad idea even to "suggest" substituting parts, it really in the end puts you in a bad situation that you probably don't want to find yourself in.

The jumping off the cliff argument does not really apply here, because you are a trained professional and people are supposed to listen to you.
If I was out with a Professional Skydiver that I was paying to show me how to jump off a cliff, and he told me to jump off a cliff, I probably would.

Noted, I'll nod this one out. I shouldn't have made the suggestion in this case.

And for the record, the modifications made to that drive were made by the people who both owned the drive and purchased the additional parts they used... parts that were ordered and delivered before I was ever involved. I was merely a witness who was excited at the proposition of a flash drive and joining the brainstorm. Gotta cover my ass too.

Maybe off topic; do you have any suggestions on CF readers with FW or FW800?

One reason someone might not want the CF is to have the fibre port instead. I'd still like to have the option of shooting 120fps 4 k. So options are always better than mandatory.

Sheer data speed is not the limiting factor to shoot 120fps 4k, unfortunately.

120fps 4K was never an option. 60fps 4K was the max, IIRC.

Grant it I haven't followed everything, but I'm pretty certain that early in the development it was certainly talked about the only way to get 120fps in 4K was with the fibre chanel port

Thats too bad that was the one feature I had hoped for, but 120 in 2k better than anything out there. So is there any advatage to having the fibre port, or is it going away?

Getting back to the CF cards, 4.5 to 5.5 minutes of shooting is pretty limiting, The disk drive has shock issues so the only long recording time available is the flash drive, but that still doesn't get you over an hour. Is there any plans for multiple drive capability or a stacked card drive?

Nope, that was 120fps 2K if memory serves. 4K was never discussed over 60p as I believe it's the clock limit of the full sensor.

I guess I'm showing my age, or maybe it was just wishful thinking.

Anyway back to the CF cards, is there any solution in the works for a reliable media over an hour? I know the disk drive will go over an hour, but Murphy's law says that I'll shock the drive some how and lose a few frames. I'm preparing my red order and shooting over an hour is a must for some of the live event coverage I'll be doing. I'm waiting till after NAB to place the order just in case any of Jims big surprises is something I can't live without.

As of today, the longest "reliable" solution is CF for 4.5-5.5 minutes. Maybe that will change on monday.

I've heard of many that adore the RED DRIVE and have had great success with it. It scares the bejeezus out of me both in theory and experience. I can't wait for the SSD drive.

Do I need to use the Red module to read the CF cards or will another firewire card reader do?

They're talking about the CF writer/reader module which bolts into the camera for recording and playback. It's not used for getting recorded files into a computer for editing.

In theory any CF reader can be used to transfer recorded files to a computer.

For speed and reliability, the Lexar Professional UDMA FW800 bus powered CF reader seems to be the recommended one:

Why did this thread have to come back to life? ...it's over a year old. :head_explode:

This applies to the 8GB RED and Lexar cards. However, the RED 16GB cards are a bit special and I've found they don't work in a few different CF readers! And don't work an any DSLR or other device I've tried them in! The Lexar Pro and nicer Sandisk readers do read them just fine. So does a SATA reader I have -- I think it's an Addonics.
