  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Captain America: The First Avenger.

In all honesty, that probably means Panavision Genesis or some iteration of the F900 platform from Sony based on what he's said. RED use is always a possibility but I wouldn't bet any money on it. Right now, the RED One camera is more of a preference than a standard of the industry but it's obviously rapidly gaining ground with certain parts of the industry because it is a great system when you learn how to use it. Ultimately though, it's the DPs and Directors that have the most clout in picking what to shoot the project on and for most of the industry, that means what they are used to and what is easiest to use for them. Johnston has always shot with film but it looks like he wants to transition to digital so maybe he will use RED at some point.

John Krasinski? Really? The Office? Why not. Should be interesting. I would have loved to see the screen test on that.

I have it on very good authority his DP - Shelly Johnson - is about to shoot a TV pilot on RED One MX. So we shall see ...

I've found that what I like so much about the M-X (like most people) is that it is walking that very fine line between film and digital and while it's not quite there yet, it certainly represents the fence being "straddled" as it were, and just thinking of the visual aesthetic of it that's been presented so far excites me to think what a new captain america could possibly look like under that same aesthetic.

I'll settle the matter, for now, since things can change between today and June when shooting begins. It's officially being shot on Genesis, which is what the DP prefers. That is straight from the director's mouth last month per his answer to an inquiry about how the film was going to be shot and whether or not the DP had enough experience with shooting digital to do a period piece. The DP also used the Genesis system for parts of Wolfman but the shots just didn't look right with the 35mm stuff so they kept it film-based.

Finally got their Captain. It's none-other than Chris Evans who played The Human Torch in the two Fantastic Four films.

I read this as Captain Power, and I was really excited...

Looks like we're getting Captain America and Thor with native 3D VFX work ala Avatar. Nice to see they are being sensible about it and not doing a simple post-production 3D conversion like Clash of The Titans was.

Why not 3D??

They aren't shooting 3D because apparently Johnston finds the cameras too bulky and time consuming.

They're doing the 3D conversion in post.

Wrong. They're not shooting native 3D. They're doing the post-conversion to 3D. So actually, they're not being sensible about it at all.

I said they were doing the VFX in native 3D, meaning the VFX are designed and executed from the beginning in 3D and not 2D, just as Avatar's VFX were done that way because they were not only shooting in 3D but they had 3D releasing in mind. Marvel Studios had 3D releasing in mind from the beginning for both of those films after Avatar came out but because the technology is still in it's infancy, it's hard to know what works and what does not until someone else does it. Avatar worked well in 3D because the VFX were all done in 3D, which makes for easy conversion to 2D. Converting 2D VFX to 3D VFX for 3D release ala Clash of The Titans is really not something they can do well at this point which is why Marvel Studios is going with 3D VFX on both films.
