Known about the basics of this for a bit, but generally this has been designed to compete squarely with the Alexa and perhaps the F55 as well.

What is interesting is it has the ability to record 4.5K and supports anamorphic, both firsts for Canon.

Canon also has an anamorphic zoom lens on the horizon. A 37.5-100mm T3.3.

Looking at it compared to say RED's DSMC2 models where we have much of these features in 4.5K-8K bodies, minus the internal ND filters. This new Canon is not exactly the most modular thing out there. There does seem to be a rolling and global shutter version, don't know much about the specific differences there. The control panel is interesting.

Just to throw this into the pot. Dragon and Helium are more "colorful" and of course there's REDCODE RAW, which is important to me.

Phil, I just had to write about it, you were first ;)

Canon have interesting concept but as always - in a completely inadequate price for the quality and features that it offers. And now Canon tries really hard to be like Alexa.

UK suggested pricing for the camera is as follows (all prices inclusive of tax):
EOS C700 EF £28,839.99
EOS C700 PL £28,839.99
EOS C700 GS PL £30,789.99
Shoulder Style Grip Unit SG-1 £2,319.99
OLED Electronic View Finder EVF-V70 £5,539.99
Shoulder Support Unit SU-15 £1,869.99
Remote Operation Unit OU-700 £2,769.99
Remote Operation Unit Cable UC-V75 £354.99
Remote Operation Unit Cable UC-V1000 £444.99

After 5D4, C700 I'm huge disappointed what Canon do. And I'm super proud that I finally bought recently my first RED cam.

WOW! It does 4.5K? for 30K?? That's amazing!! (sarcastic mode dialed up to 11...)
I haven't seen anything like that since... the RED One days...

It's also modular. You can swap the mount at a Canon service :))

Thanks Phil, didn't you hint a new 70-200 is forthcoming as well?

Coming from DSMC2, is my perspective just skewed, or is this thing not absolutely massive to the point of being unwieldy? I feel like my Scarlet-W is about the size of just the Raw recorder on the back.

That thing is vast! The only interesting news out of all this is the anamorphic zoom coming
but even the low end red cameras outperform this at a fraction of the price. Why bother...?

Ok, so you need to buy an extra unit to enjoy the coming raw format? I think I could been happy getting an c300 mark II as a second camera if it just had 50fps in 4k and RAW. This seams to cover this but I think the price gone off the roof as I guess you need a extra unit to enjoy the RAW. Also wondering if its compressed raw or not?

Still wish we se a RED "ENG" version with built in nd and a kick as autofocus.

If it had 8k and internal raw maybe it could've been worth the 30k but it looks like its the same thing as the varicam LT..

Just for a perspective, the only thing this does better than the Raven is the 30fps in 4k ProRes, where the Raven does 2K only. Other than that, the Raven outperforms this monster at .25 on the Dollar. And considering the Dragon sensor, I have no doubts it will outperform the Canon sensor.

Looks like an amazing camera to me, just that Red is four years ahead. Canon has alway charged too much, except you can get a C100 Mark i for a song now a days, which I did, and use that camera for clients that want small files and own one themselves. Gotta say, love the small battery and internal ND. Canon has their niche, but you do have to wonder for how long if they don't get their pricing down.

Definitely a bit of a head scratcher. Seems like manufacturers are going in some full circle back to pricey (pro) gear, and away from the 'democratization' direction of the past 8 years or so. Now lots of offerings in the over 30-40K range that seem to be cannabalizing each other. Arri, Red, Canon, Panasonic, Panavision. But all now catering to higher price bracket. Meanwhile, in the real world of digital media content production there is a strong drive to do the greatest with the least. If Canon thinks hobbling a camera like the 5DIV is protecting the cinema line etc I think they may be tripping. For all the nits one can pick about cameras like the A7SII and soon the GH5, that is where I think a lot of artists are looking. Canon is very slow in learning what Sony and Red already figured out. Red's Raven and SW show they understand both ends of the market and there is coin to be made making small that over delivers, not just another comparable mid range number like this C700 that specs out as just another option on sea of the same already. I think this one is a miscue. Would have been smarter to come back with a C300 or 500 that shoots at least 60p in 4 K with true 15 stop DR for half this price and quit messing around.

It will sell and rent better than any Red camera regardless. :P

Well, considering that many Rental Houses are having issues renting most of their C300MII stock I sincerely doubt it. As the camera doesn't really bring anything new to the table that you couldn't get from a RED, F55 or Amira (Alexa Mini). Most people or productions that need a camera with this kind of Specs probably already own one of the cameras I mentioned.

Panasonic was trying the same thing with their Varicam, but they and Canon both seem to be a bit late to the party, especially because they don't seem to have a price advantage either. There aren't many reason to go for the C700, especially not switching from any of the mentioned ones.

Don't take my word on it, but you should take a look at this Article from Matthew Allard from Newsshooter
