  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon's new C700

Coming from DSMC2, is my perspective just skewed, or is this thing not absolutely massive to the point of being unwieldy? I feel like my Scarlet-W is about the size of just the Raw recorder on the back.

Cinemilled XXXXL Arms... Please.

There are plenty of shows/genres/workflows for which the C700 would be a solid choice.

Agree with the posters who question it's price tag at this point in the evolution of the marketplace. RED radically accelerated the technological race combined with changing the pricing structures. Even if the images are great, who are the buyers? Most of what I would see as the target market already has a RED/Alexa/etc.

Dual pixel CMOS auto focus, for the runner gunner and with ef lenses this is a nice thing.

Yeah, Dual pixel AF and internal ND is whats make this thing interesting. But Canon should cut the price almost by half before I get one.

I'm curious to see what will happen to the C500 & C300 line. This seems more like an actual C500 replacement than a step above it. What would you offer in a C500 MII to keep it below the C700, but still upgrade on the original C500, except for Dual Pxel AF?

There are many creatives who love the Canon look, as there are quite a lot who like the Panasonic Varicam for its colour rendition. This camera will have a market like Alexa has despite the inferior tech specs compared to Red cameras.

On these boards its like going on a boat trade fair. People there look at the new crop of boats, complain about design quirks and inferior tech specs, don't see any meaningful advances in the exhibited new boats compared to their old 4-knot shit box and leave happy the show with the nice confirmation in their pocket that their investment was the best thing to do in their entire life.

Personally I like my dragonized Epic camera, its a good camera for many jobs. But its noting special today anymore. One of the biggest advantage of the Dragon sensor is it's boring, bias-free, look liberated colour rendition. But this is only me and some others because out of the box there is nothing in a Red camera picture that makes people say wow, neither does the 6K raw resolution give me in my 1080p reality - and the vast majority lives there as well - any big advantages, nor is the sensitivity noteworthy. It has an awkward RAW workflow with funky ISO numbers only insiders understand, it needs transcoding after the fact and a SKDs in 3rd party software that requires some deeper reading and head wrapping. With Alexa and this Canon camera you shoot and edit instantly without any headache. Many care about such things. The Red cosmos is in a way a sand box for technical nerds, Alexa is made for DOPs and camera assistants and Canon for the pros that look for a cheaper alternative to Alexa with a solid colour science that has a long and proven ancestry. With it's price tag it fits well in this target group.

I expected more. The c500 with the Q7 is still a better deal, costing 12K if you go Canon.

Even better deal now! The c500 just got lowered down to $7k. So with an Odyssey and RAW license it'll be around $10k... OR 3 Canon RAW 4k cameras for the price of 1 Canon not RAW/4.5k without an unknown priced Codex box

Yes

As is seemingly always the case, the vast majority of posters on RedUser are looking solely at specs, price, and size. What they should be looking at is images. Although there are none currently available for the c700, if you look at the images of the C500 they're probably not dissimilar. And the images of the C500 are somewhat unique, particularly in terms of texture. They are very "silky" (I don't know how to better describe them) and very detailed. Concentrating on specs, features, and price ignores the simple fact that the most popular digital camera for features and television production at the studio level is still the Alexa, which by the standards of this board, falls short on all of those criteria. But it does have one thing that the others don't, and that's images that creatives have fallen in love with.

I can't change the perspective of people here, nor do I want to try. But there is a world that doesn't solely look at resolution numbers, highest possible frame rates, and price as the overriding criteria for a camera choice. And that world largely runs the higher end of the film industry.

Its a landmark form factor camera from the point of view of the company.
But 4.2k isn't much of an improvement from C300 or C500 which can also do 4K 120fps into a codex recorder.

Its aging form factor raises the question of its core tech. Its weight and size compared to Red and Kinefinity is puzzling.

I hope the image is superb, otherwise it is late to the party.

Not sure who Canon is targeting with this release..
Like others have said, I haven't seen these type of specs since well.... the RED One.

Maybe an expensive new reality TV cam?
idk

I understand that some people dig shooting Canon C-series cameras. They like the image and workflow, they're not looking for more resolution, etc. What I don't get is why those same people wouldn't just keep shooting C300Mk2 or C500. Why lay out the coin for the C700? For the extra resolution and Codex RAW you say they don't want? I assume all the bigger rental houses will put a couple on the shelf, and some Canon fans will buy them happily - but will that be enough units to cover NRE/Marketing/etc...???

I still maintain that for the C700 to be a sales success it needs an owner-operator friendly price tag. IMO, in 2016, that price point is under $15K including VF and a couple of media cards.

My two cents...I don't know all the specs and pricing for options, nor do I know the sensor image quality.
In any case, if I were consulted I would've recommended a $25,000 all in price point for this new C700.

When the Canon c300 was first released the response was a lot like the responses on this thread- derision and what the fuck is that? It went on to be the most used video cam of its time for a number of reasons. When I first tried to buy a Red Dragon they were unobtainable, so I bought a 1DC and then c500, they have both been great workhorse cameras, the c500 though difficult because of the need for external 4k recorder, is a fine camera and now at its lower price a steal. When I finally got my pair of Dragons my world changed. There is nothing like shooting RED color science. The Canons out of the box have pleasing, no brainer good skin tone. The RED, once you dig into it- Exquisite. That extra avenue of personal expression that the RED ethos opens up is a solid from an otherwise capricious universe. My Helium? What strange quanta comes marching towards Bethlehem? What worm hole did this pop through? It is a new birth, all before is old testament. And back to the c700- nice upgrade to what Canon does well.

Perhaps.

Or a realistically priced high quality 35mm TV and cinema production camera.

It is not targeting owner/operator segment.

Doesn't exist if you're shooting in Cine-EI mode, and is about as true in 2016 as the one about all Red footage having 'plasticky skintones'.

It is there regardless of Cine-El mode.
Unless properly treated.
