  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon EOS R5 with 8K video! No crop!

Are we all pretending RED ONE, AND EPIC DSMCs didn’t overheat? Especially at the beginning? I guess we are...

Yup.

I suspect you could make a heavy duty bottom plate/rod plate that was also a heat sink and even could incorporate Peltier cooler.

You wouldn't need to swap Cf(express) cards, it would already be loaded in the 2nd camera so time saving there. Depends on the rigging - if its one of those big complicated Frankenstein rigs it's a problem but with separate sound recording it shouldn't be that hard.

This looks like a really useful camera. However we should not forget the 1DX either. As I understand it has less problems with overheating, less noise and can also do 60fps RAW which to me is very useful.
I think this is an interesting camera. A few uses I can see:
- Photos!
- Timelapses. 5DSR has nice image quality but is a bit slow and clunky so any improvements would be nice
- Filming C camera, and maybe some establishing shots. We often have long lenses on our big camera, so nice to have a wide angle setup that is small
- A mini Gimbal setup for wide angle shots. We can have our 3 (!) big cameras ready for mostly longer lenses and then have a small camera with wide angle setup that can be on a small gimbal.

To be fair Komodo is probably a much better camera for all filming needs that I mentioned above.
I think 8K is nice and we use it all the time but it is not such a large stepup from 6K
Red has tons of other features that this Canon will not have such as pre-record, customisable shortcuts etc a more flexible raw file system, slow motion in RAW etc.

Has anyone posted some 8k .crms yet? Really wanna bend it til it breaks. Hell, does anyone know where any 5.5k 1DX .crms are posted for download? I've messed around with some c200 4k stuff (was pleasantly surprised), but really wanna try out some DSLR/Mirrorless bodies.

OH, and apparently at 8k the rolling shutter is 32ms (according to EOSHD)... which isn't great. But, half the resolution would presumably be half the rolling shutter, right? So at 4k it'd be as good as the R1~Scarlet~BMPockets, and that's acceptable.

Sounds like the 4k =<30p regular mode doesn't overheat. 4k 60p takes a while, but 4k 120p is the fastest, followed by 8k (or 4k from 8k). Maybe they'll eventually include a 8K WS/2.4:1 which would alleviate the heat, reduce files sizes, and/or potentially notch up to 48fps. Or 4k s35 crop with no pixel binning... hell, maybe they'll eventually include raw for any flavour of 4k, which would also be harder to overheat. There are so many potential solutions, I find it bothersome that they didn't include them from launch (hence why I think it's their way of protecting their Cinema line... And/or an eventual "R5C" for $1500 more).

For my full time job this camera makes a ton of sense. So does the Komodo for some reasons.

Personally this just replaced getting a Komodo for me. I can do wayyyy more with this camera from start to finish than with a Komodo.

Don't forget this little detail... Komodo has the only 6k global shutter.

Are you sure you can do way more with this camera? What specific features are you thinking of?
Cheers,

In terms of a solo operation and locations I can get to yes absolutely. I have other cameras for covering the drawbacks that everyone is complaining about.

When it comes to needing FF 120fps, stills, Time-lapse ability, size, and overall durability this fits the bill so much better personally. I've been looking to downsize from DSMC2 for awhile to have smaller and lighter power to get further on foot/skis/bike.

For my full time gig they both make a ton of sense. I don't think they're direct competition other than price bracket. Komodo with the global shutter presents some advantages I need for shooting cars (lights) and the screens inside those cars.

Rand, always check a few posts back man. Rehashing stuff that's been shared and even discussed.

Phil,

Came late to this thread, didn't see that this was posted a few pages back already. I'll remove it.

How would the stills compare to Komodo?

Could put any lens on this camera with adapter, just like Komodo?

But it’s actually full frame...

Bit depth?

It's a canon RF mount same as Komodo, so it can take almost any lens with proper adaptor . Canon EF lenses work almost as well as the RF with the canon adaptor with added bonus of built in ND.

in stills mode its 45 MP with stabilized sensor and shoots 12fps mechanical and 20 fps electronic.

I think a lot of advertising still jobs will be shot with this camera in the coming year.

Robert,

According to the Poster of the video, he had some problems with maybe how his computer dealt with the files

At YouTube link description.

"Something a little different this time! Got my hands on a preproduction unit of the brand new EOS R5 for a day and decided to take it to the zoo to test out the 8K and IBIS. Shot 8K in IBP. Took some photos as well. This is not a technical test by any means but I did want to try and see how practical it would be in a real day shoot. Unfortunately made a mistake of shooting 4k 60p for two shots of the monkeys at the end and had to scale it up :( I have noticed some blotching in some clips, mainly in the shadows and I'm not sure why). Files were difficult to handle without transcoding. However, they were extremely sharp and detailed. No colour grading/correction done, just used a C-Log to Rec 709 lut provided by Canon. Also, I know its only 1080 but YouTube won't allow me to upload in 8k :(.

I was shooting under blazing hot sun and unfortunately, I did get the camera to overheat for a few periods. Once the camera overheats, you'll have to wait awhile and it will allow you to shoot 3/5 min depending on how long it's been cooling. You won't be able to record 8K and 4K once it overheats but taking photos and HD will work fine. "

Tested the IBIS with an EF 100-400mm, mostly shooting at 400mm. NO post stabilisation applied to make sure it was fair. Once again, this is a preproduction unit so things might change in the full version."
