  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon 7D vs. RED ONE - a real footage comparison

Álex,

I'l try to do it during this weekend if I can but only at my small balcony because I wanted to record ProRes 422 HQ instead of H264 with 7D.

One day ago I've got BM Intensity Pro card and did the first low light Quick & Dirty tests (that really means footage is not a perfect one and

have always some flaws as usual, also don't expect anything "creative" in a way of DP aesthetic... it's just a simple, quick and dirty test).

Stay tuned.

Hi Sajin,

Please, shoot some zone plate/ test charts to compare resolution on H264 vs Proress 422 HQ 1080p vs Still with your Canon 7D, I suspect the line skipping of the 7D will still be there. The artifacts should go... But I suspect the line skipping will remain. Please use the sharpest lenses you have...

Thank you very much,

Juan

We just read today at CML that RED GOES HOLLYWOOD.

Great news.

Let them go to LA and try out to take over Hollywood Hills... :w00t:

and as I suggested long ago here at the forum maybe the road to top of Hollywood Hills would require

to go over Woodland Hills to get there first from another side of the famous HOLLYWOOD letters... :sifone:

But that's a little bit about RED strategy and now go back to my recent test R1 vs 7D.

Actually nothing new there.

R1 still beats 7D (important info for all R1 & 7D "die hard" fun boys or the fun boy "haters").

I did HDMI capture via BM Intensity Pro to figure out how about 7D picture quality from that point and please have a look:

but the HDMI might be dodgy-dave Sanjin.. The stills look almost identical. Did you record the 7D footage, did you grab a still from the actual recorded video? Better or worse that would be a more realistic test, surely no-one is going to use a 7D to film capturing via HDMI :-)

Roberto B,

sorry but the first video that looks nice is not available for download @ any HD size (!!!???).

Also I don't say that 7D is bad but opposite is a great little hybrid DSLR cam (photo+video).

GlideCam HD 2000 is pretty smart idea to use with 7D...

The second video I know well from long ago.

My test was just a technical taht we can compare video outputs from 7D with R1 quality picture.

Sorry again but for the test purpose no any picture wise "creative sort of content" was involved in that.

Intentionally I'm not doing it here at the forum just because there other places that are strictly dedicated for that sort of material.

yeah.. some guys like to see their own footage as an asset rather than the machines where it is cocked.. oops.. cooked.. cooked.

Of course that I understand this too.

Strange to see that even a still picture from the 7D has aliasing.

Pat

Patrick,

probably because it's shot in the video mode with AF enabled and not at the full photo mode.

Of course I just guess...dunno exactly what is going on there...(???!!).

Well, those charts look like crap ... and that video looks pretty sweet.

To me it is a matter of understanding its capabilities and limitations and keeping in mind the price. I have a RED, will get epic-x #206, but also just bought a 7D. For $1700 it has a 900K pixel LCD - 50% more pixels and much better off axis viewing than my RED LCD for the same $1700, so with the 7D i get a good LCD .... and a FREE 18MP still camera and a sort of HD video camera (with S35 DOF characteristics). And the "free" still camera - at 18MP, 8FPS, 19 point AF, wireless flash control - is on a par with (and in some ways better than) the BEST Pro 35mm DSLRs of just a couple years ago.

I whole heartily agree it is a good b-cam (especially to work my way up to scarlet) I do a lot of live events and I can use it to just cut away to audience shots and what not. It's also a great still cam 18MP come on, but to say it's the main cam and I will use it for everything no.....

Michael,

with your 7D get AJA KiPro HDMI mobile rugged recorder to record ProRes 422 HQ instead H264,

two underwater enclosures (one for 7D and one for AJA KiPro)

and then you'll get the best low light underwater digital cine acquisition rig that can compare with 16mm even 35mm !!!

Could be that a combo with 1DMK4 + AJA KiPro will be a dream underwater low light rig!!!

I don't believe you can come out of HDMI and get full 1080p it's compressed, though barry green from DVXUSER used this adapter to get get res to his monitor -

http://www.hdfury.com/

Maybe that can goto the kipro but if not we have to find another way...

Very nicely done. Wich crane did you use?

Thanks

Pat
not gang production.. how could the gang have shot this one here?

our standards wouldn't accept such poor cuts.. sorry.. the fancy picture styles are nice though.. and don't cost a fortune to the on-budget arthouse ehehehehe

thx liam

I actually did download the original clips form Philip Bloom and yeah, the footage was WAY smoother in the original file than in the version posted side by side with the Red One footage. But that clip the OP posted is what made me notice that the original Philip Bloom footage still stuttered a lot more than in the footage from the Red that the OP posted. The stuttering in the 7D isn't horrid or anything (if anything the slight jello-ing I BELIEVE I'm seeing bothers me more) and for most projects outside of action I wouldn't mind it that much at all. But I am interested in learning why its there.
So it sounds to me like the 7D would be excellent for shooting panoramic landscape vids (no action there) and as a stills camera.
