  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Canon 7D and Nikon RAW 35mm video camera?

Kind of strange specs.

1080-24p = WIN
lack of 1080p overcranking = FAIL
APS-C is kind of fail as well, since it makes a lot of L-Series full-frame glass less useful.

I thought that video of the woman in italy was poor. Canon should have given ME this camera for a week. It does seem like the artifacting and moire pattern BS has been worked out better on this camera. I was watching the high-frequency waves in the water, and the brick walls. I didn't see any of the pixel-binning nonsense that plagues my 5D2 video.

With the specs on this 7D, it's making me think that the 1DsM4 might be the real camera to watch out for. We might see 1080-60p, and possibly even some type of 4K/RAW. Or Canon might just put out a standalone digital cinema camera.

Interesting, that is significant, what do you think has changed?

I saw the video posted on Vimeo and I wasn't impressed at all. If it was for real.

Tom, you should just plan for either the Epic of Scarlet FF35 because there's no way in hell that Canon or anyone else for that matter is going to beat the versatility that RED is offering in their new DSMC system. Plus I believe RED wants to make the best product possible, whereas Canon and everyone else is just trying to bone the consumers for a couple grand every couple of years for cameras that are just a little better than the models before them.

Hi folks,

if the new 7D has finally a really working live view feature, it would be a cool stop motion camera. Its light weight and small enough to fit on a small rig (we are just about to release a new 3D rig for stop motion work pretty soon).

Thats a market where RED is simply "too much".

For live video all of these blown up DSLRs have many disadvantages. All things come down to a compromise:

If you can not afford something better (like a RED ONE, if we stay for "available" tools) then such DSLRs might be OK.

But I have yet to see a 7D at a dealer near me. So for now the 7D is as real as any EPIC, SCARLET or whatever. Correct me if I am wrong.

The fact that they might have used prototypes somewhere doesn't impress me at all. Making a released product is the real game. Clearly CANON can do it, no doubt.

After all the big players start rolling. CANON will have hard times to keep DSLR and video cameras seperate product lines in the near future. They need to join the teams to make something similar to what RED does. The same will happen to the SONYs, PANASONICs, etc. in this world. Competition is beginning to follow a road that (mainly) RED has paved.

What I still don't see on DSLRs is a real workflow. Its very hand made stuff. Compromises all over. Thats seperating the professional users from the wannabees somehow.

The thing I like most about SCARLET and EPIC is that they will use the SAME codec family that applies for RED ONE. So the bottom line is that whatever camera you use, you could basically use the same tools. Show me any other traditional camera company where this goal is even thought about? Instead they present us new codecs at nearly monthly basis (...slightly overcranking here...).

Honestly, each tool has its market.

For shooting real live video, I would prefer a RED ONE over any announced DSLR by far. Even at way higher cost. Its a no brainer for me. But as pointed out above, for stop motion work its a no brainer to do it the other way around.

Cheers,
Axel

Yeah, it's a tough call. With Red having shifted into "run silent" mode for almost a year now, it makes it difficult to plan ahead. I think that Red has "overcorrected" with this new policy of damn near total silence. It would be nice if they could settle in with a middle-of-the-road policy when it comes to announcements.

Of course FF35 Epic is my top choice, but that camera could be two years away, for all we know. And it's gonna cost over 50K - 60K by the time all is said and done, if not a lot more. If Canon were to put out a FF35 4K RAW overcranking camera for like 10 or 15 grand, I would definitely jump on it. I really don't know whether I will finish my film at 1080p or 4K, but if the 3K Scarlet comes out soon, with nice overcranking, then I will probably get it and start shooting, which would lock in my project at 1080p.

It looks like the race is really starting to heat up now, and we still have yet to hear from Panasonic, or Nikon really. And of course, Canon seems to be just getting warmed up.

Have you shot with the RED One yet?

R1 doesn't suit my particular style of shooting. DSMC is what I have been waiting for. Faster bootup, lighter, smaller, better DR, better ISO/ASA, etc.

I know its a big camera to hike around but it can be done...compared to a 5D2. Plus once you use it you might realize that everyone else doesn't know what they are doing and RED has this game locked. If you want to try it out Tom hit me up. Its one thing reading about it and seeing footage. But using the camera is a whole different experience.

I love it.

"Family videos".

:mad2:

That may have been a bit much on my part. How about "awesome family videos"? Or "pro family videos"? :)

I did however include low budget projects in there. The family stuff is just the bottom end of the spectrum of what a $1700 camera will likely be doing. Don't get me wrong, I am tempted to get one and do some very cool stuff with it. However, I still find it nearly impossible to say to a producer that we should shoot on a DSLR and h.264 when Red One rental rates are about as much as you spend when you go to the supermarket. It makes ZERO sense unless you need to destroy it in a stunt or can't fit the Red body in there, which will change this November.

Nothing is going to change this November... We will see the current prototype and hear about their plan going forward... Ted said nothing about a release date to my knowledge.

Does anyone know about the Canon 5DMK2 Hack that get you 24P?

The lens doesn't change the codec though. Maybe DP's that don't trust colorists and Directors messing with their work would like it.

Is the footage posted?

Maybe now is a good time to clarify I hope I am wrong and that I hope the 7D will be fantastic. I would want nothing more than to be able to buy a $1,700 camera that could give me everything I ever wanted. It doesn't seem to have be the case though.

He did. It was on that on-line radio show site (sorry I can't remember the name). He basically said that November we should see Scarlet 2/3" and Epic-X so long as engineering goes as planned. So while not a hard date he did say that November is their current target.

EDIT: Here you go. http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=34264

At this time there isn't a hack to give the 5DMk2 24p.

Thanks. Hopefully Magic Lantern will change that soon.

Edit: OK. I don't know what happened but as soon as I went to that site, my firewall turned off and my computer was having problems(CPU usage staying around 100%). Maybe a coincidence.

Just got Spyware!

Yeah, me too! I'd rather have an Epic FF35 than my R1 and 5dMK2. The question is when this might happen.
