  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can the latest MacBooks Pros playback 8k RED files in say 1/4 res?

You should try Clevo Europe computers. Find a dealer, because their website don't have the latest prices.

It will probably end up expensive as a maxed out Apple, but the built, specs and look are similar, better and acceptable.
It has three downsides though which are size, battery lenght and noise, when using the full power of their labtop.
Obviously, they have full size GPU in it (or 2), 4 drive bays, 4 slots of ram...

Also, their monitors blow away the Retinas. They have a matte and satin finish, it's really pleasing to look at. Especially outdoors.

It should playback 8k at 1/2 around 18-20fps in resolve, and 8k 1/4 at full speed easy.

Yes trashcan is possibly the worst. But pretty much any machine with a 1080ti plays back half debayer 8k no big needs for ram or CPU.

I've been doing the assembly on this feature using FCPX on a D700 nMP and with patience, I am having a great time editing with 6K to 8K footies.
Now, of course, this is all in some half-ass proxy mode (some parts are original) and really can't understand why I need to be seeing this in half debayer if I'm just editing.
So much hate for these fast reliable trashcans ;)
I never got to experience the gpu issues with the dozen I've had to pleasure of working on.

I been working in 4k since 1999. So far all speed improvements have been much welcome, the trashcans was not one of those. They where actually a step back and outpreforned by macpro towers with faster GPUs.
When having a large 4k screen and a setup that rips trough 8k then anything less just feels very clunky. But sure its possible to do work on pretty much any computer I still edit and grade 8k straight from the mag on my 2011 macbook pro very often. Its not fast but a lot of times thats no issue.

Jumping in on this thread. I’ve been looking at the ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo UX581GV with i9 processor and RTX 2080 GPU. Anyone tested this one yet? I too am about to jump out of the Apple ecosystem...

Hiya Ron, I have not used the Asus, but the full 2080 GPU should be very fast. Problem with the laptop is almost always cooling, especially on the CPU. We used a MSI with a full 1080 GTX, they now have full 2080 GTX. We also had it modded from HID Evolution so it had better cooling and it never had problems with overheating no matter how hard we pushed it. Quite heavy beast though at 5.5kg.

Well, i just bought the 16" MBP with:

2.4 GHz 8 Core i9
64 GB RAM
AMD Radeon pro 5500M w/ 8gig Memory

If anything will play 8K at 1/4 res its this in a laptop.

Arrives in a week.

Strange. I'm cutting a feature shot on Helium and Gemini. No problems with 8K on my trash can in FCPX. Looks like it's doing a 1/4 or 1/8 debayer, which looks perfectly fine in my small edit window. RCX is a lot slower, but FCPX is smooth. Even with multiple layers of 8K r3ds and an adjustment layer over all. 2013 3GHZ 8-core w/ 64GB RAM.

The reason why 1/4 8k is important on a Laptop from my POV is that it is a mac laptop is our DIT tool and getting full HD quality is essential for on set checks. We used to drag a RRX around just to do this..

So ideally and roughly...
8k will do 1/4
I'd can accept 1/4 from 7k
then 6k would hopefully be 1/2 but I supose 1/4 isn't too too bad..
I'd want to see 1/2 rez 5k
4k will def have to do 1/2 rez debayer
and 3k and bellow should be full debayer

Now the big hope for us is that with new and coming metal suport for debayer a 16inch full specced Macbookpro tramsform all of this to be more PC/Nvidia like...

Shouldn’t be a problem if the metal support is decent. Any of the recent higher end mobile Nvidia GPUs can do full debayer 8k no sweat.

My 2018 MacBook Pro with i9 6 core, Vega 20 and 32GB RAM can edit 6K 50p R3Ds, 8:1 in FCPX. Proxies makes it miles better, but it works...

16" maxxed out can play 1/4 res 29.97 no problem.

Depends on the compression. In my testing it needs to be somewhere between 7:1 and 10:1, otherwise 1/8 is the max resolution without any stuttering. Tried it yesterday on my maxxed out 16".

Thank you for posting... pretty disappointing! I assume you are talking about 8k FF?

Really hope Red sorts this out with metal support ... ARRI and Sony files will present no problem re playback..

Curious what happens to AMD cards on Windows. Is Red and the broader industry really going to support 3 GPU compute API? Cuda and Metal, ok, but OpenCL is dead in the water.

Really depends on the software, and will hopefully get much better soon once Red puts out an update for Metal R3D playback. Performance in latest FCPX is already quite good, and honestly usually unnecessary to playback in 'Better Quality' viewer mode on a smaller screen. I don't have many situations where I care about full quality debayer when I am moving quickly on a laptop and it always jumps back to the full debayer when playback stops. The quality is all more than adequate to make any editing decisions that need to be made and easy to move through the footage.

Hopefully R3D Metal support will roll out soon and you should be able to do full debayer as well. Even with that though I think I would normally just default to working in lower debayer on playback for editing. But should help quite a lot for full quality rendering.

And don't forget any added support for Metal should increase performance nicely across any recent Mac, as we already saw with that latest FCPX update.

All I really care about is will my new MacBook 16 be I able to playback my rushes on a shoot at good enough quality for me to check things over (prob in redcine but would like Resolve) .. and 1/8 at 8k is just not good enough (also at 4K 1/4 is just not good enough).... this basic issue is not an issue with any other camera system on a specced up Maclaptop...RRX was great but didn’t work with post dragon footage on a laptop so I had to get rid of it...

After reading the various comments, I decided to see which RED R3D files could be viewed at full rez on this latest and greatest MacBook Pro 16". So I moseyed on over to RED's R3D page: https://www.red.com/sample-r3d-files to have a look.

The result? None of them. Not even the redonemx-4k-30fps could be run in RCX at full debayer without stalling for a moment. Makes me miss my RED Rocket card.

If anyone is able to view anything at full-rez, would love to know the specs of the files. Compression and FPS are huge components, so simply saying you can run 8K all day long with no problems, really doesn't help. The devil is in the details.

With all of the work going on in the background at Apple and RED, it doesn't surprise me that FCPX is making big strides and playing better than Premiere. But I'm wondering now if RCX is getting long in the tooth and possibly EOL. Is there something else in the works as a better solution?

Nothing ever stands still at RED or Apple. I cannot imagine this laptop in a 2008 world when RED was first coming into the market. Reminds me of a helicopter shoot when I used a RED drive with the ET mount on my R1. Now, even my laptop doesn't have anything spinning, all SSD.

This is so weird...curious what platform you guys are using. My 2013 trash can (not maxed out) doesn't have much trouble with 8K. Just did a test: 8K raw with a multi-layer color grade applied, took 8m:39s to render a minute of video in FCPX. 3 minutes shouldn't take more than a half hour.
Rendering out a feature film (98 mins) with a mix of 5K and 8K, usually done when I just leave it overnight. FCPX seems to be a lot faster than Resolve and RCX. Ironically, my 8K R3Ds play more smoothly than OSMO Pocket 4k footage...
