  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can Red ask Nikon for one Zmount zoom that is good optically?

Considering we shoot compressed RAW Nikon lenses would look bad especially when it comes to distortion.

I don’t know about the request, but an interesting development that I might expect would be a box you can tick in redcine X pro to enable/disable automatic lens correction.

And that said, for now you might want to make friends with a nice PL mount adapter. :-)

Compressed RAW and lens distortion have zero relationship to each other.

In terms of distortion in primes and zooms, I'll focus on zooms here, Nikon just released their Nikkor Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ. I'd start there. Generally you'll find an interesting balancing act between zoom range, lens size, and maximum aperture playing a role on distortion. Canon recently is relying heavy on distortion correction on some lenses, but it does keep the lens small if that's a priority. If you want good coverage and a big zoom range with a fast aperture, that lens will be larger, hence the difference between Premistas and say smaller VV/LF/FF coverage zooms with a similar range. Also corrective elements and their shape can play a role here too.

I guess to a more interesting point, a good chunk of Nikon Z mount glass works great right now, but it makes my mind wander what we could get out of some interesting new motion oriented or hybrid designs.
