  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can Ipad be a monitor for RED ?

I wouldn't expect that for the Red One, but the Epic / Scarlet both having Wifi, there might still be hope for them...

Imagine that : a cheap, lightweight, wireless monitor for the Epic, with at least 10 hours battery life... Hmmmm...

technically yes, if u stream your signal via wi-fi from video village ( doubt any are set up for that yet).

u can monitor the stream from the ipad/ iphone/ laptops via wi-fi (be it via safari or a dedicated app)

If you can find an HDMI to 30-pin cable you are golden ;)

I have a feeling in the near future this will be used. The screen is amazing on the iPad. And the fact you can view it at a 178 degree angle is absolutely amazing.

Red's usual response to suggestions like this seems to go:

1. No. It is impossible.

2. We are already making the best camera in the world. We know what we are doing. We have carefully thought out the features and made the right decisions.

--- Silence ---

3. Okay, we have figured out how to do it.

But please, it can wait for Scarlet II and Epic II. Or better yet, a module that will go on the brain. Please don't redesign the cameras now.

But the iPad would make a really sweet remote monitor. With the touch screen it could even work with the touch focus system. Latency would be the killer, however.

iPad would but then again its 1024x720 so what kind of output would you get?

You would need an App for it, it's very possible, supposidly the SDK now allows for inputs so you'd take that HDMI to iPad adaptor and deal with it, or you could do, the iPad to Video out and then video out to HDMI, probably the one way to test it in the short run... though its meant for external output and not input...

In theory you could have the app do the stuff like RGB etc. for all the non-RED cameras and just a clean display input for the RED one...

It would take a while though to get it working though I'd think...

Wait until someone creates an HDMI input accessory. Otherwise you'd do something with wifi- i.e. remote VNC a computer receiving a live feed from an HDMI input. But other than the cool factor a proper HD monitor would be better in just about every way.

may we connect the ipad via dvi adapter to the RED someday......

Meanwhile at Red Studios.........

The team are hard at work. The mood is one of contained tension. Jim stares out the window, his vision slightly filtered by the smoke from his smouldering cigar.

Brent looks up from his screen. He appears to be annoyed.

Brent: Now they want to know if they can connect the ipad via dvi adapter to the RED!

Jarred: Tell 'em to eat shit. Ungrateful %$^#@*&xx%$^ers.

Brent: But it's Easter.

Jarred: Fine! Tell em to eat chocolate.

Ted: Is there such thing as a HDMI to 30-pin cable?

Graeme glances (unseen) towards Ted and shakes his head silently.

Jim: What the hell. Are we an app store now as well. Who do these guys think they are. Do they have any idea of what we do here.

Brent and Ted nod in silent agreeance. Graeme continues working without looking up.

Jim: Graeme, what do you think?

Graeme: Yeah. Yeah. I agree.

Jim: No! Do you think you can do it?

Graeme looks up in knowing disbelief. He breathes heavily through his restrained frustration. His frustration builds as he speaks.

Graeme: Jim! I am attempting to squeeze a 12K sensor into a 2K matchbox, the selectable outputs on Build 32 are disintegrating, the holographic 8k projector is pixellating AND if I cross the algorythmic deviations with the square root of the independent logarithmic configurations while we isolate the ......... Yes. I think it may be possible.

Jim: Good. Happy easter guys.

Jim smiles proudly as he looks around the room at his team.

Jim: Well you've had your break. Now back to work.

Jim looks down to his monitor and begins typing, 'EPIC is alive and shooting incredible images......'

The 12K backlighting the smoke of the COHIBA

Cheers,

Well, seeing in the other thread that they already have bought an iPad, I would be surprised if they hadn't already been thinking about this...

Epic is Wifi, iPad is Wifi. What we don't know is, is it possible to stream video through Red's Wifi connection, and can the Epic downconvert that to an iPad resolution ? And does the iPad SDK allow a direct connection to another machine, or does it have to go through a router as it seems to be the case right now on the iPhone ? (or did that already change ?)

But I think that if it's possible, they will do it.

More than just a monitor!

More than just a monitor!

The Ipad could be more than just a monitor. It could be teleprompter, alternative RED touchscreen remote, wireless monitor that lasts for hours (even though it's not as high res as others) and it could possibly record a proxy file with timecode, so that producers, reporters could have instant playback and in and out points recorded for good takes, bad takes and general review of interviews, performances etc. Also, possibly an app could be made for basic on location butt editing to see how things are working. Plus the normal iPad features which are simply handy to have on set or on location. Now that would be great!

Joe, I really enjoyed that script. Very funny. Now head over to the offices, light the scene and shoot it!
