  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Camera self rebooting...

i have got one of my REDs (1364) back from upgrade program. since then, the re-boot problem has been getting worse and worse. the camera is now 'unrentable' as it shuts down and reboots at least 10 times per shoot day. comes back on with blue-ish screen on RED LCD......

what have others found to be the solution. (we have tried re-installing the build 17 firmware and black shading thus far which has not seemed to help).....

This is for me very troublesome to hear. Do you know if it is a common problem? I´m looking into buying a RED one as the base in a system for rental. Have you solved thge problem by now, or is it still the same?

Reboot issue

Reboot issue

Check out the RED support site. We just posted Beta Build 20 Version 20.0.2.

We have spent a lot of time investigating the root causes of camera re-boot and green screen / audio codec errors on playback.

After extensive internal and in-field testing we believe that this Version of Build 20 will resolve most, if not all, of those issues.

I'm also getting regular unexpected shut-downs and re-boots on Build 20, many even without the "Powering-Down" message. Are there any fixes to this yet?

Thanks,

Paul

By chance, is it possible you lightly bumped the cradle/battery? My cradle came back from RED and now, if I flick the battery while on the cradle = off camera....

A v-plate best practice is to "break it in" to get a better mating. Mount and unmount the BRICK from the battery plate about 20x with some force. You should see a much more reliable connection. If not and you have new battery plates, could mean the mating connectors on BRICK are damaged.

I am going to submit a support ticket but here are my specs.
camera just started doing reboots with blue screen on lcd. Camera recently came back from red for upgrade. worked fine. went to build 18 for a specific job. then went back to build 17 then the trouble started after then.
It has happened on a job where I just sent the body and battery plate. They had problems with rebooting. I got it back and and it happened to me. Anyway two different sets of lcds and cables and evfs other guys were using Drives and I used CF cards. I reinstalled 17, changed battery plate (from updated one to another updated one) and problem still happened. sometimes I am touching camera, sometimes not.
seems like it is a firmware/body thing. everything else has changed. maybe go to 16 then back to 17? don't know.

I'd recommend that you upgrade to Build 20...

Paul can you send the camera LOG file to RED technical support ?

i would love to, but only after it comes out of beta. Professional jobs and all that.

I would like to reiterate this point. I know that Beta-testing has to fully run it's course. However, if one of the answers to seemingly random reboots is to abandon a Build completely, then I think there has to be an urgency to get a Release Build--suitable for professional and rental situations--out as soon as possible.

We hear you, and getting to an official release as quickly as possible is our goal too.

The re-boot issue is understood; and Build 20 V20.0.2 and V20.1.2 resolve that symptom.

But you may have something else going on with your system - maybe a damaged cradle, cable, or drive.

So if you still see problems after installing either one of those versions, please do these two things -

a) Contact RED technical support and give them a complete description of your setup.

b) Send us your camera LOG file.

You should just rename the newest firmware as V20.1.3 and call it a Release Build.

hmm... what is more professional?

#1. Release Build with rebooting issues.
#2. BETA Build that works perfectly.

I vote for #2.

As with all Builds. Problems get fixed but new possible problems get introduced. And when push come to shove producers or clients can use the "use of beta" on a production against you if they have any problems unless THEY were the one to request it. I already have a client refusing to pay full rental because of audio problems. Yes, I know it's an excuse but some people will use it. So yes I would rather use buggy "release" build than an apparently working beta unless everyone in chain of command has signed off on it. My own projects are a different story.
That being said I can smell build 20 becoming a release build soon. Can't wait. Actually I wan and will wait. but will be very happy soon I think.

I am seeing on Build 20.1.3 that our cameras first have a scrambled picture on lcd and evf, seems not on HD-SDI, and then the camera try to reboot. Mostly it comes not up ok. So a new reboot fixes the problem. That happens about 1 to 2 times a day.

Known Problem ?

thx

So it looks like, that only the graphics are scrambled and the picture coming from the sensor is ok in the background.

Sorry to revive an old thread.
Is this issue solved? Seemed like it was a firmware issue. Did reinstalling firmware help anyone?
I am still on B17 since it's stable and works well with my older camera (#344) However, my newest camera (#6882) reboots by itself, with no one touching it, with a good battery, sometimes while recording.
I've stayed away with the various new builds because of the SATA_TRANS error and the Build 21 "brick" issue.
I've filed a support ticket BTW.
Cheers,
Harry

The re-boot issue is understood; and Build 20 V20.0.2 and V20.1.2 resolve that symptom.

I think that the issue is firmware version independent. We have 3 Red cameras of which 2 are over a year old (#3000's) and one about 2 months old (#6000s). The new camera is on v20.1.6 and the old ones are v21.4.1.

On all our 3 cameras we experience "color bars / reboot" problem from time to time. This can vary from none to 4-5 times during a single day of shooting. I doubt that the issue relates to batteries, accessories, camera age, overheating or the firmware version. Since we experience the problem on different conditions, different firmwares, different temperatures and differently aged cameras.

I had this happen to one of my cameras recently and i sent it back to RED.
It turned out to be a HARDWARE issue and was quickly diagnosed and repaired by RED.

Mine was not a software or accessory issue. So, that said, these type of problems can be ANYTHING.
