  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Camera self rebooting...

Resurrecting this thread... was the cause finally found/revealed?

I am having the same 'self-rebooting to blue' problem. Is the only solution still to send it in for service? Any new news?

I've filed an incident ticket.

camera self-rebooting

Victoria,
Ours (2180) came back from RED apparently without any alterations to it. They couldn't replicate the problem I was having.
I ran a few more long record tests and sure enough the camera rebooted itself, trouble was I wasn't standing next to it when it happened the first time.
My assistants at work did take some pictures of the LCD screen though, colour bars had come up and it was "initialising" all by itself.
Same thing happened a second time a day later when I was showing a DOP the camera in prep for some tests.... not a good look.
And this was WITHOUT the Birger Canon mount connected to the camera in any way at all, just a Red PL lens, power from 240AC, to a Red Drive.
I've emailed Red with pics of the LCD but heard nothing as a follow up.
Good luck.... :(

Hmm, if RED can't replicate the problem, but you continue to have it, it seems it has to be related to something you are plugging into the camera.

I'm going to take mine in next week when I'm in OC. I'll bring along the battery plate and drive that have been connected with each reboot.

I've only had this problem with the PL mount (also use dumb Nikon mount), so I'm going to disconnect the pins (Sean the Tech Support Guy's suggestion) for this weekend's shoot.

I'll post issues and progress in the hope we can get to the bottom of this.

My RED1 just returned from the audio upgrade (few hours ago). I plugged in the EVF and started to setup the settings. Then i let the camera to run by itself in a corner just in case. i used a RED brick.

15 minutes later i suddenly stopped hearing the fan and checked what was wrong. The camera had rebooted itself (first time it happened to me since i bought it 1 year ago) and it came on again with funky colours on the EVF (Greenish hues).

Then i turned it off and after 30" i turned it on again. For the moment it seems ok but i didn't like what happened. There was nothing strange plugged into the camera. Just RED stuff and normal PL mount.

i have 2-3 random reboots (to blue screen) for every shooting day - they happened during playback and when the camera is idle.

it seems like reboots are more often when recording audio with phantom power.

Red One #4711, factory installed Build 17, Indoors, evenly spread out during the day, normal temp, red drive, AC power

just for the statistics

I have the same problem sometimes our Red one.
The camera shut down and self reboot with a wonderfull blue screen :yikes:
The firmware is the build 17

i have got one of my REDs (1364) back from upgrade program. since then, the re-boot problem has been getting worse and worse. the camera is now 'unrentable' as it shuts down and reboots at least 10 times per shoot day. comes back on with blue-ish screen on RED LCD......

what have others found to be the solution. (we have tried re-installing the build 17 firmware and black shading thus far which has not seemed to help).....

You should go ahead and give build 20 a try. I don't consider it BETA if it is more stable than build 17 release.

i am really hoping build 20 is as much about stability as it is about color science. none of my clients unfortunately will 'sign off' on a build that is not considered a release build. they are very particular about this, even if it is better for them to use build 20.

does build 20 fix this camera re-boot problem??

I just had this "color bars / initializing" problem for the first time tonight. After about 2h of good shooting, the camera started rebooting - constantly. I gave up and abandoned the shoot. Whats the problem, should I reinstall the firmware (build 20).

My camera was out on a rental using Build 20 (low light tungsten, they understood the risk) and got the color bar initializing issue a few times. They were cool with it and just restarted the camera, which worked fine.

Never had this before b20, though have had lots of restart issues in the past that I believe were related to my cradle. I'm now testing the belt pack with build 17 to see if I can get stable results.

We've had the same problem today shooting a short film (Camera shutting down and rebooting with blue lcd). This has been happening mid-take and during playback. It's been a day wasted. We are shooting 4k 16/9.
We have been shooting handheld and very long takes (over 5 minutes) so my guess is that the camera is overheating - even though the temp display says OK.
Whatever it is it's really @$*king annoying.

Any solutions?

Check your fan intake - make sure there's no dust.

Other than that, you can try disconnecting the /i cable from the mount.

Other than that, you can try killing all mobile phones in the vicinity.

Other than that... no idea...

Same to me.

I'm also getting regular unexpected shut-downs and re-boots on Build 20, many even without the "Powering-Down" message. Are there any fixes to this yet?

Thanks,

Paul

Stuart, I just used my camera today for the first time since I got it back from RED for upgrade. We shot for about a half hour and then while watching playback, the LCD went black and soon the RED Initializing logo came up and the rear lcd displayed "...booting" and it hanged.

I ended up pressing the power button and it took a good 10 seconds before it turned off. We turned it back on, watched playback and the LCD went black again, only i don't believe we saw the Initializing logo. The rear LCD displayed "...booting" and hanged, so I hit the power button, but this time it stayed on for over a minute and I eventually just removed the battery. By that time we had to leave so we packed up.

Any ideas?

THANKS! :)
