  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Camera self rebooting...

And we're creating SOD and EOD logs on the card for standards with the idea that (for R & D), we'd generate a comparison log at the first-post reboot. I'm very pleased to say that, aside from one forgivable boot failure, the camera has behaved as it should. If anything happens over the next couple of weeks of shooting we should have more info, until then...then.

Thanks for all of your efforts in helping us narrow down the conditions, guys! Our RED engineers thank you!

first day of shooting with red number 4215, at least 15 unexplained reboots in a ten hour day at the beach. if i push the play button, it reboots almost every time. really a nightmare. we were using build 17 factory installed. it would reboot any time for no obvious reason. while recording, while idle, no explanation at all. i already loose this first time client, i don´t know what to do. please i need a way out, tomorrow i have the second and last day of shooting and i am already suffering. any clues? using reddrive, evf and red lcd with the battery on the red cradle. MAX setting and qt proxies enabled.
also, after the reboot, the lcd wouldn´t work, so we had to unplug and pulug the lcd cable.

It won't help you but we've faced exactly the same problem.

We are now waiting for our camera #4320 back to our studios. Upon receipt we'll do some further tests.

Red team advised us by phone that the problem came from our red drive, not the camera. So we expect to receive today a replacement drive or a fixed drive to be sent to us along with the camera.

I hope everything will be fine.

Brent,

Here is a potential piece in the puzzle. The dreaded reboot happened a few times on #4704. I wasn't around but our team on the set found resolution by moving to CF. Most other variables were fairly standard, indoor/studio shoot, static camera on tripod, no patterns to boots, during record, play and just sitting-n looking at the frame. Camera is currently in Mumbai, India so expands on the geographical angle too.

I could begin to draw inferences, but I will leave it to the experts. I am opening up a trouble ticket on this for your reference.

thank you fred! second day was really better, i avoided playback and i only had like 3 reboots. a hard drive bug sounds like a possibility for me, but i don't really don't know, i only have one hard drive. let's pary! good luck!

We just rec'd our Red One back from the upgrade and have had this problem since we got it 5 days ago. We never had the problem before the upgrade. We're on Build 17 installed during the upgrade.

We have only experienced the reboots related to playback, thus far. That too is inconsistent. We had one clip that would crash the camera every time, but at different points in the clip. We rendered the clip in RedCine and the media is fine. We remounted the drive on the camera and the same clip played with no crash.

We've tried endless combinations of monitor, EVF, etc. connections with no discernable pattern. The crash occured with camera on tripod (no movement during shot), room temperature 55 degrees F.

I hope this thread hasn't gone dead. If this issue has been addressed or solved, please respond asap!

Boy, is my face red. I'm fairly sure our problems were caused by a dust-choked cooling fan. RED was unable to replicate the problems at the factory, so that leaves only the enormous dust bunny I removed before shipping it out.

So, lesson is: check for dust!

I'm skeptical that temperature is a factor. Our camera did not develop this issue until after returning from the RED i-pins/audio upgrade which included a full diagnostic and cleaning. The camera started to reboot during playback during our testing of the camera prior to putting it back out in the field.

I am going out this week with a new client I have been devleoping for 6 months. This is his first RED shoot. He's very excited and has booked an additional 8 days over the next month. I'm very concerned about this issue, but have gotten no response to my tech support ticket. Red seems to go quiet at times like this.

I don't think it is a heat thing. Happened to me in -5 C degrees.

Had problems with one of my drives the other day (drop frames for absolutely no reason), switched to my 2nd drive (not sure if I had reboots on the 2nd drive, but I'll track more closely). Today when 2nd drive was full and switched back to 1st drive with problem it rebooted on playback.

Never had this problem before until upgrade and camera was returned with new firmware.

Same here.

Mine isn't random though. Every time I playback it will crash and reboot to a blue screen. I Have tried with 4 different Red Disks. Interestingly, we have one magic disk which doesn't do it.

Our other body, not upgraded, never does this with any disk.

I tried with build 18 and got the same thing.

any news on this? maybe a raid replacement? new firmware could solve it? please, we need some help.

Here We get the reboot and blue screen during camera check. Two cameras different hardware for each one, the same bug. No recording at all. Red Drive attached but no playback nor recording. During focus test, only looking at the chart image (EVF and LCD connected). Next to this we also cant record on one camera neither with cards or disk. INTERNAL FAILURE RED WARNING We reboot manually and then we can record nice into both media devices.

waiting for some help about this...

best!

Hi i am interested to know what happened with you after you received the new drive. Cause we had the same problem with camera #4241. I sent the drive to red they replaced it and and asked me to re-install the camera firmware again. However, the camera rebooted after playing back the first shot!! it also took a lot of time to process the third shot and we had to restart we were shooting (redcode 36 - 4K - 25fps - red drive). on the other hand the flash card 16G was very stable in shooting and playback no rebooting or post or camera crashes with the exact same conditions!! Now in Egypt no DOP wants the red drive (i have 2) they want us to get more 16G cards. Red Support failed to give me an answer to the problem or to send me a diagnosis on the drive they fixed. The second drive that i have also behaves the same way.
No one has an answer!!! I am very disappointed.

Omar,
Maybe Cail Young could shed some light on this issue. I had two of their cameras during a 5 week shoot . One of them was rebooting all the time, without any apparent reason. Three to four reboots an hour was the norm. We got another camera from them and for the next three weeks we had NO REBOOTS at all. We were shooting on CF cards and used the same accessories with the second camera. I don't think the heat was the issue because we experienced temperatures ranging from 38 to 46 Celsius in the shade and had no problems with the second camera.

Sorry, I can't. We sent #1295 back for eval but they couldn't replicate, on its return it behaved for a while but it's doing it again, this time with ambient temperatures in the high 20s Celsius, which is ridiculous. So, it isn't heat, media, power, vibration, or high-detail images...

Cail,
Sorry to hear that. Since it happens in Egypt as well, we can eliminate the southern hemisphere factor too.

Hi guys,

when we took delivery of camera #2121 it would spontaneously reboot as well. Sent it back for evaluation and it turned out something was loose inside the camera. If it's of any use please ask Red if the issue is the same as camera #2121's issue from October 2008 (Red ticket No. 33201).

had 3 random reboots (to blue screen) today - all happened during playback.
Build 17, Indoors, evenly spread out during the day, normal temp, red drive

They were not a real issue as it was a laid back set. We just move playback over to redcine if needed.

Though I would chime in as it would be nice to find the cause
