Caldigit T3 12TB RAID

Anyone got a chance to use this yet? What are your thoughts?

I'm thinking about getting it, both for the speed and extra 4TB of storage than the typical 8TB G-RAID that I use.

Thanks!

Hi,

i received my CalDigit T3 3TB a few days ago and its working great for me and has an beautiful built quality.

It has no hardware raid controller but if you plan to use it as Raid-0 i don`t think that matters much.

Raid-0 Speeds when empty are about 550 MB read/write on mine with AJA system test.

Hope that helps!

That's exactly what they advertise them as. Good sign.

What about drives swapping? Do you have to use a specific brand?

I haven`t tried swapping the drives yet but i plan to upgrade to 9 TB or 12 TB in the future. As far is i know they use the following drives in the T3:

6TB - Toshiba DT01ACA200
9TB - Toshiba DT01ACA300
12TB - HGST HDS724040ALE640 (P/N: 0F14681)

As i said i don`t really know but to me it looks like it should be pretty easy to swap the drive on your own.

You can hear the fan of the T3 but it`s pretty quiet and everything keeps perfectly cool. Speed of the T3 dropped to around 280 MB read/write (AJA) when i filled it up with 2,2 TB of the 3 TB in total. But that`s total normal that HDDs are getting slower if the fill up.

That was going to be my next question... so you can swap out drives with larger ones?

I ask because Lacie prevents one from doing that. If you buy the Quadro 6TB, you can only use two 3TB drives in it, you can't put 4TB drives in it to max out your storage... you'd have to buy their 8TB version... so annoying!

I don`t think that`s the case here. Found this in the T3 FAQ:

"Yes, you can always upgrade your T3 with the higher capacity T3 interchangeable drive modules. And yes, you can always put your original drives back into the same T3 enclosure."

Altough i am not sure if it works to use your own drives.
