  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Burst" mode possible?

"Burst" mode possible?

Doh! I thought you were talking about a 'Burst' mode - but I see from your poll it's a 'Bust' mode you are looking for… I guess that's why all my cleavage shots look so bad!

Haha yeah i misspell it... that what you get for using a iPhone lol!

Is a list even neccessary? Ha! Just couple of things are enough. RAW, 16-bit color over 8-bit, current framerate options, lens options, dynamic range.
Oh yes its neccessary. Anyway i meant for BOTH cameras. For example (not saying these exact specks, but this is just a reference), Scarlet 2k MAX fps is 60 for continus shooting. The BURST mode however, could maybe do 2k at 120. Same for epic, 2k is 300fps. Burst mode at 450fps...
So its not "just for scarlet" to make it closer to a epic, its just really useful...

Tim, you're fighting a losing battle here at Reduser. Burst mode would be awesome! Even if it were 2 seconds of 120fps at 2k....or 1 second at 200fps! What a great idea! Hell, imagine 3k 60p 12:1 8bit....even that would be awesome. (speaking about Scarlet)

I can't see RED implimeting a slow-mo burst mode for the Scarlet from a business view only.

I'm a PM so no axe to grind at all, as camera ownership isn't needed (production will just rent). But its seems that the FS700 is the camera that the skate kids (wide ranging term, but you know what I mean) will gravitate towards. It has the slow motion required for their needs and web based delivery, plus it has a simpler workflow.

Scarlet/Epic are RAW beasts, with a different workflow. Plus, a fully rigged Scarlet kit (plus lenses) could easily hit $25K-30K depending what you get & the FS700 is around $8K so that'll probably come in at $15K if you include lenses and support gear etc. Very different value propostion and I can't see RED chasing that market. It's all about ROI when you get into higher end cameras/price points.

Perhaps the FS700 is the new 'must have' for people. That'll be followed by the Black magic Camera (where people are already trying to push for higher frame rates than 60fps - even though it's RAW) and then it'll be Scarlet with the new Dragon chip and then something else again :)

IMO RED would start to devalue Epic if a slowmo/burst mode was added to Scarlet. The slow motion features are part of the Epic's value set, according to cameramen I've talked with.

But, of course, this is RED, so all things can change.

Tim, the sort of feature you are asking for is not something that could be added to a system without adding significant additional hardware. The current Scarlets and Epics would have been advertised with a 'burst mode coming' if it was part of RED's core design choices for the unit So what you are really doing is just 'wishing' for a feature because other different cameras already have that feature...

Now, a more pertinent question is could there be a module that would allow the Scarlet to increase it's speed via adding a ram buffer/lower simpler compression rate to allow burst mode, or there a hard limit on top speed due to clock speed inside the camera etc.

I have to dissagree. The way the scarlet is degined is not like normal cameras (where features are locked in). The scarlet is more like a regular computer if you will, where it can be re-programmed. That's another reason why there are different features with every firmware upgrade (and why people call red as "allways in beta":) ). I don't think red said any of the new features we see in the firmware were comming ether. Take 1k 120fps for example... To anyone thinking it will be a epic compeditor, it won't if you add this to both cams. I'm not talking crazy fast on the scarlet, possibly what it can already do, just at higher res for a few seconds.

If I understand your view of it all correctly, you are incorrect.

+1 I second this. I have in in my Z7 HDV, it does 3-6 and 12 seconds at 120 fps and uses memory. Once the slowmo has been recorded it writes it down. It also has a cool feature where you press record after the event has passed, meaning that i.e., if a golfer swings the club press it after the swing, then it writes down the previous 3 seconds. Very useful for animal docs.

nothing super amazing I agree, but enough to support my point.

"Super amazing" wasn't my point. I'm saying that all of these things either had been mentioned before as a feature to come, or something that is to be expected with further development.

Even the Gyro was mentioned 2 or 3 years ago...so, I guess I'm afraid I don't know what point you are trying to support. :)

Camcorders which apply noise reduction and lossy compression before writing to relatively slow recording media need big RAM buffers. Scarlet/Epic might not ...

well I guess we will wait and see. Anyone else got somthing "supportive" to say?

I am so into a bust mode...just like in "the fifth element". you hit the wrong button and the camera explodes on you!!

Sorry I wasn't trying to be indifferent for meanness sake. It's just best to move on if most likely there is no possibility.

One final thing I'll add. Even the FixedScarlet I used didn't have a burst mode.
