  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Building a Resolve PC?

I'm really curious about Titan for all cuda tasks. Neat Video in AFter effects would be VERY interesting compared to other cards.

i cant wait to see some non gaming comparisons as well, most of the stuff i have read about the titan so far are just gaming benches which aren't telling me much.

also i want to see how driver optimization effects this cards performance, i think (hope) we will see some improvements over time

Looking forward to hearing your GTX Titan review.

We just recently bought a Kepler-based NVIDIA MAXIMUS system (SuperMicro SuperServer) with the K5000 and the K20. It would be very interesting to compare how the GTX Titan holds up vs. the K20 in Resolve (and other applications too). That is: K5000 + GTX Titan vs. K5000 + K20.

The MAXIMUS system we have now is mostly for 3dsMax / Maya stuff, so if you find that the GTX Titan kicks ass in Resolve, our next color grading system will definitely be a K5000 + 3x GTX Titan beast (still cheaper than a K5000 + K20 MAXIMUS config)!

One issue there is it can be iffy running Quadro + Geforce. I did for awhile and went back to tesla. Quadro + Geforce isn't a supported config so you have to wait for Quadro driver releases that coincide with the Geforce ones, etc.

Quadro + GTX cards often doesn't work properly (or at all) for MAXIMUS mode. With Resolve it seems to work fine with their CUDA implementation.

In some of the CUDA benchmarks I'm seeing from others, the Titan looks to be about 10~15% slower than the Tesla K20X. It is also less than 1/3 the price, so that's something else to factor in. NVIDIA is marketing the Titan not only as the new line of GeForce cards, but they are promoting it as a compute card as well, even promoting it's OpenCL abilities in addition to CUDA.

It's going to be interesting to see how it stacks up. For MAX/MAYA, I'm betting that the K5000 + K20X is going to be superior. To start off, that's the only way to get dual GPUs kicking in those apps -- via MAXIMUS. Secondly, both of those cards have superior OpenGL performance to the GeForce cards, Titan remains to be seen though. For GPU-accelerated rendering tasks, which really aren't that prevalent anyway, the Titan should be almost as good as dual GTX680s. Will be superior for tasks that use larger data sets or where we can benefit from fewer bus on/off transactions.

True! MAXIMUS is unfortunately the only way to really utilize the GUI + compute style multiple GPU acceleration in professional 3D/animation applications (which is why we bit the bullet and invested in a MAXIMUS system). CUDA-based rendering is slowly creeping in (V-Ray RT, Ottoy's Octane Renderer, iRay for MAX etc.), CUDA-based RBD and destruction is already available (Ruins, Blastcode, etc. for Maya)... what I'm really waiting for is CUDA-based fluid/particle simulation. In RealFlow 2013's presentation, their rep mentioned that OpenCL is going to be incorporated into Hybrido (their large-scale fluid solver) and that CUDA is in the works. Fingers crossed! TurbulenceFD is CUDA-accelerated but isn't available for MAX/MAYA.

I was more interested in getting your thoughts on how the Titan stacks up against the K20 in Resolve though. I love Resolve for being "smart" enough to handle a Quadro + Geforce system. In fact, they recommended it, even when assuming a price-no-object approach, over a Fermi-based Quadro + Tesla set-up in their configuration guides (but that was before the Kepler-based MAXIMUS came out).

Considering price, the real question for Resolve users is: K5000 + 3x GeForce Titans VS. K5000 + 1x K20 (with the former still being cheaper!!!). I think the answer is obvious!

How about and UPDATE?

Do we have any BlackMagic guys on the forum? Wondering if RED is giving the "keys" to GPU debayer to you guys for Resolve. If so, now what does the ideal Resolve PC & Mac look like?
