  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 4 is almost here....

Haha, I wonder what camera that would be. I often do many tests before shooting. Rehearsals. If you are far out in the forest with no electricity then it would be very useful. I never agreed with "avoiding features because users may use them wrong". If that was really the case then we could take away the format tool as well. So my vote goes for a Delete button. :)

One more vote for the "delete clip" feature. Wouldn't use it all the time, but there are situations where it would definitely be very handy. Recorded rehearsals or tests you know you won't use, stuff you recorded by mistake (that can happen)... Make it optional if you're afraid of people using it by mistake, but in the end let the user chose. Hey, as Andreas said, in this case the format tool shouldn't be available in camera neither... ;)

that surplus green finish is just sick!

And I gotta tell you.. This is one of those "new camera" builds. So much new stuff in here it's boggling.

can't await it. but i'm hearing the cry and scream of the cable on the + 1 sided l-connector...
i'm very pain-resistant , but seeing such a cable solution, ooouchhh, that really hurts... :-(
best, norbert

heh heh thanks... it was a mandate.. I hate that stupid ( but necessary ) adapter just as much as you do. Seemed pretty obvious to just start putting stuff inside it, like the +1, to make it a little more "useful "

Out of curiosity what is the purpose of the module adapter? Would it have just added too much weight to a naked brain to create a structurally sound mount point? It used to make sense to me since you had Epics and Scarlets of various dimensions so I thought it was just a size adaptor to a universal size. But with the death of Scarlet and FF35/645 brains I've been curious as to its anachronistic existence ever since.

One of the first things the students in REDucation say when we first show them the main menu is, WOW, this is so SIMPLE! Only veteran ACs get confused. ;)

Absolutely. You know, I heard someone say the Red Epic Menu was confusing. DSLR's have sub-menus and what not. I move about the Red Epic menu without any problems and I am not that smart.

Hm... Not true to what I have seen.

I don't have a hard time with the menues, and thus I shouldn't mention it, right?

Wel, no.
Because I have been observing a lot of aensless use.

I had a longtime RED fan and Epic longer, try my camera one day. He is technically capable of understanding GUI's, borrowed the cam one day and after a while said:

Ouch. Lovely pictures, but this feels like Windows. Built by/for engineers.
And it is buggy.

On the other hand you have DIT's looking for settings in pressed situations, and swearing over the structuring of the menues.

I think the menus have a lot to do with how the idea that "Alexa is easy, Epic is difficult" myth persists, and I observe that first hand.

Fun part is that I think they are pretty equal, menu/operational wise all in all, but Arri has made it extremely easy to "get started". And kinda requires a DIT, to go "advanced" (codex certification, anyone)..,

I am talking about perception, not if it is not possible for me to change the framerate...

Glad to know you feel the same as we do about that module adapter.

I also shoot in the wilds frequently, and agree with you for the same reasons.

One thing, We can update REDMote over camera, but we can select "Yes" only if we have RED Touch LCD, It would be a great thing if we can select "Yes" with User 1 button on Side SSD and "No" with User 2.

I always update over comp, but sometimes if need, it would be a cool thing I can do it without touch lcd.

Those are my thoughts as well. Seemed to make sense in the days when there was an announced variety of cameras. Now, every explanation of why it exists [that I have heard] fails to explain it. The best reasoning I can come up with for it is if they would have integrated the mounting components within the brain, it would have added a bit more weight and half an inch at the rear. so now we have an adapter to accomplish a transition of mounting, it adds a bit more weight and about an inch at the rear. So the reasoning for the module seems to be two-fold: 1> shaves a tiny bit of bulk off the rear of the camera for when we don't need the modules and their quick-locking mechanism. 2> protects rear connection terminal from repeated insertions and wear - making the module adapter, a user-replaceable part, take the brunt of those interactions. IMO, reason number 2 doesn't work out in reality. I, and most other RED shooters I know, prefer to have no adapter on the back if we're not running any other modules. Therefore, the connector on the camera still takes just as many insertions. This may change, and I may be compelled to leave the adapter on the camera, once the +1 adapter is here. That extra port so I can connect both an LCD and EVF at the same time is golden.

There will probably be quite a few second module adapters available here when the +1 comes out thats for sure :)
To me it seems lika a thing that was just a quick fix to get the RED ONE upgrades out as quick as possible. Or that they solve something that was not done proper when the epics started to ship. would be interesting to see the inside of it, if it's any electronics in there or if the cables are going straight trough.

If that were true -- it'd be pretty contrary to everything I've witnessed in regard to RED. Their manufacturing, R&D practices, and level of customer loyalty don't seem to support that line of thinking. If some facet did indeed manage to elude a billion QA checkpoints, or somehow the initial design proved flawed, I think they'd be the first to admit it, and then do something about it. And that action would likely work to the owner's advantage.

True, not that it makes any difference, but it would be fun to know what's in it.

It doesn't make sense because what's stopping them from having the module adapter's camera-side connection on every module? Like what's the advantage to having to make a separate union device (other than to get an additional $300) for, essentially, a proprietary spacer?
