  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 17...

Jannard has himself called the RED an ultraHD camera. Cut the guy some slack Tek. We are only talking about a camera here, we're not curing cancer.

Do mean thing like words like these?

I am glad you understand what it means.

When someone create a one time fake name to post an ignorant slam on RED I take offenses to it.

Freedom of expressions does not includes lies, guesses, and slanders.

RED is a DIGITAL CINEMA CAMERA with build in play back.

Tek

With respect Tek, I think you're overreacting, or reading more into that post than there is.

Don't forget there are still people just discovering the Red, or who don't have time to read every little detail on this forum! There's no need to jump on them swearing. Just correct them politely - it's much more effective

I can guess at what it means... Maybe I'm assuming it means something worse than it does. Why don't you just write out what you're thinking so the rest of us know for sure. When you resort to name calling, that's sinking pretty low. When you mask it behind other characters and leave it for the reader to guess at what you're saying, then they're going to assume it's bad enough that you didn't feel comfortable to actually write it. Considering what gets posted to this forum on a daily basis, that would mean it's something pretty bad. A lot of pretty rude and offensive stuff gets posted here and we usually let it go.

Is that how you interpreted his post? If that really is the situation, then I would think it not even worth your time to respond to it. But I guess I'm not you...

Some people are just learning about RED and don't have all the terminology sorted. Not everyone views RED as a "cinema" camera. To some it's something else entirely and to the lay person, it's still HD, just that it has a lot more pixels and something to do with better color.

Freedom of expressions does not includes lies, guesses, and slanders.

I've read the poster's two posts and I have no idea what you are talking about. He actually has valid concerns that we would expect from someone not familiar with the RED One.

RED is a DIGITAL CINEMA CAMERA with build in play back.

If you say so.

Just a question: Why? You don't own the company.

People aren't gonna like the camera, so what. Let it go.
Guess what? I hate grain in film, I think it's distracting in the theatre. Guess that means I know nothing about anything and I should promptly light myself ablaze.......

It's drive Mr. Booth crazy, I know. He always think it's about him.

I will hold my urges unlike Mr. Booth who use real words from stuff that he drinks.

LOL

Again, this thread is for Build 17 subjects.

Tek

Uh, no. I don't think it's about me - And I don't drink, ever.
You didn't hold your urges - you attacked someone because, as YOU stated, "When someone create a one time fake name to post an ignorant slam on RED I take offenses to it."

You are correct in that this thread is about Build 17 though....

It's system/compression throughput and not drive speed.

The Red One was quoted on the home page of Red's website as delivering 12 megapixels (4K) at 60fps, until NAB this year, when those words disappeared, many month's after the camera's release.
I'd like to see the board/s dealing with compression being updated, rather than having to pay an extra $??,??? to swap it for an Epic, which does deliver this.
50fps would do.

Video assist

Video assist

Has anyone used video assist with the newer builds? Wondering if there will be a delay, as I expect through an AJA - and if so best solution for dialing it down.

To answer the question, all the builds have had a "video assist" its called the HD Preview output and its 1280 x 720 progressive 50.00 / 59.94 Hz

No there is no delay.

The 4K @ 60fps was uncompressed output via the RAW Port module that sits where the CF module attaches to the camera. The RAW Port was a high-dollar add-on to the camera, I don't recall off the top of my head, but it was in the tech specs and fine print that 60fps at 4K was only available via the RAW port. Not to mention the massive storage system needed to capture the uncompressed RAW stream which can be up to 1.2GB/s. Yes, that's gigaBYTES. So plan on a RAID that's close in size to a small refrigerator or under-counter dishwasher.

RED made the decision to not produce the RAW Port at this time, it may be completely discontinued now. So the 4K @ 60Hz spec was removed from their site. I think this has a lot to do with the coming about of EPIC, the incredibly generous trade-in policy toward EPIC and the whole aspect of dealing with that RAW Port and tethered to external storage, quite possibly other reasons we're not aware of.

As for EPIC, we don't know what it will ultimately offer. I would like to think that it will do the full 4K~5K sensor area at 60fps or better. But the actual specs have not been revealed other than the bits we were fed at NAB, like REDCODE up to 100MB/s, etc..

I don't expect to see 4K 60fps from Red one but something in the 40s would be really, really, really great.

I hope Epic will do 5k at 100fps as that is what has been announced.

Fact is the Red website said, front and center, WE DELIVER 12megapixels at 60fps. Said it until just a few months ago.
It was never delivered. Confusion and hopes reigned on this forum for a long time. That's my only point. No bad attitude, and I love shooting on my Red.

Jeff, back in Japan I have tested successfully RAID with 1.6 GB/s for the Kurosawa project - I know exactly what You mean... But I think there is still a market for such a option. Even if it meant BTO option. Clearly they have the working prototype...

In any case they should remove the "All formats recorded as 12 bit linear uncompressed or compressed RAW" from the bottom of the technical specs page...

Now regarding the EPIC's ability to record at least 4K at 60 FPS or more - the actual bandwidth of 100 MB/s (which seams to be limited by the projected speed of the upcoming CF cards next year) would barely suffice for the 4K-RAW @ 60 FPS. To do it at 5K it would have to be to the RED Drive, which would have to be outfitted with something like the new Samsung SSD's (2 of them), which would provide combined recording speed of 320 MB/s - which should be enough for 5K up to 120 FPS... :)

Just my two pesos... :)

It is really fun to buy a camera that improves (at no extra cost) every month or so. If I were an owner (I am), I would be smiling at every firmware upgrade.

Jim
Absolutely,
Thanks

It's still a 12megapixel sensor so in that sense they did deliver :gun:

I like to think of all the things they did deliver that weren't on the list.
If they held to that list, then I'd hate to think of all the things we wouldn't have or might not get with future updates.

Once again guys...Thank You...b17 just waiting...
