  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Build 17...

"Could do with a Raid before Sunday 24th or I'm gunna miss an important historical event in the north of england, and probably end up crying"

OR rent a Red drive ... if no rental house has it then post here on Reduser that you need one for that date ... the choice is yours to either make arrangements or end up crying ...

The choice is yours to either make MULTIPLE arrangements or end up crying.

Firmware upgrades should be free in my opinion, for many reasons, that was my point. If something is free, but you keep being reminded of the fact, psychologically, its no longer free (especially if you're trusting and investing in them).

To fix advertised features with known bugs? Yes, free.

But firmware upgrades that effectively add new previsouly unadvertised features to yoiur camera are pschologically extracting some price from you when the vendor mentions that? Gimme break...

As even you point out later in your post... such features take resources to develop. Just because it's lines of code, as opposed to a piece of machined aluminum or an electronic component, doesn't make any less of a feature. Especially in the day and age of software-driven hardware. Should the vendor not mention the new option they are giving you for free for fear of hurting your feelings?

You think i;m not trying. Most red raids are busy. I might get away with my one CF card, but I could do with rc36 because of predicted poor visability, on the night. Space will be tight if I'm trigger happy.

Hurting my feelings?
I don't have a problem with new functions/features, but optimizing the codec, i think, should continue for free.
Its the most important function of the camera, again, in my opinion. Its up to Red what funcions they add for free or not (on top of advertised features)
I was mainly miffed about the audio situation being below parr, and thought that was in need of a firmware upgrade too, but apparently we're all getting a new sound board, so i am much happier (which I didn't know when I first posted on this thread).
As for the codec, I'd like that to mature a little more, if possible. Red has never completely revealed what functions will be in the R1 when they do start focusing on Epic, or possibly declare the R1 complete, so telling us we're getting something for free is a bit weird. Hopefully that will be after continued optimization of the codec.
Also, what Red learn from the R1 development should still be, at least partially, relevant for Epic , so the free firmware updates are a benefit for all parties concerned, customer and Red.
I'd hate a deliberate attempt to keep a functionality divide in order to seperate the R1 and Epic, hopefully that will be mainly achieved with hardware differences. We, the redusers/owners, don't point out that the beta testing many have done is for free? Or the log files sent back are for free? Or the problems encountered using a camera still in active development is free? and time is money whoever you are? and thats my point, they did it willingly, the firmware updates are the reward? Everything has a cost.
We all know the dollar is weak and Jim is generous (even me), thats why we love him, and back the revolution (as well as the total lack of competition right now). How soon the competition arrives, i'd say, will be influenced by what functions are in both the R1 and Epic, as well as the loyalty Red already have. That loyalty is strengthened by free firmware updates, but I don't expect new functions to last for ever, just till Jim says "Good enough, its a rap". Maybe I shouldn't have let the word "free" bug me, but that was a phrase I'd expect from a company with a different business model and paradigm, who rarely give an inch for free, and feel the need to "milk it". I believe Red already is dangerous, and don't need to point out everthing they do for free. I believe when all the R1 updates are complete, then they'll pay for themselves by increasing sales and winning more people over, hence they're not free, simply an investment Red as a company, makes in itself. Hope you understand that point of view, it wasn't an attack, I was just stating another point of view.

Anamorphic squeeze in camera??????

Maybe if I say pretty please with sugar on top and close my eyes?

I agree. Unsqueeze preview and actually shoot 1.2 aspect. Not just give guidelines and inset in 16:9 as my understanding of it is now. This would help with getting higher frame rates while requiring less storage.

Could do with a Raid before Sunday 24th or I'm gunna miss an important historical event in the north of england, and probably end up crying. ive never had the chance to use rc36 either, its getting a little annoying now.

I'm fascinated to find out what this historical event is up north? Sun coming out? :bleh:

Seriously if you really need a Red Drive have you tried Decode (www.decodeuk.com), they've got loads (check with them concerning price but I think it's around £50/day)? PM me if you need any other leads, there are loads of companies out there who can rent you are a Red Drive).

Best of luck!

Thanks, and no I haven't tried them. The event is the Tinsley Cooling Towers at Sheffield (the ones next to the m1), these great icons of the north are being blown up on the 24th at approximately 3am.
