  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So what can you expect from Build 16? Many things. But here are the BIG THREE.

1. Less noise. While the RED ONE is considered a very low noise camera, it can always be better. Like many digital cameras, the toughest areas for RED footage is tungsten lighting. Build 16 improves noise characteristics in all situations, particularly in the worst conditions. You can still generate noise, but it is measurably better. The volume is less and the type is much less egregious. If you have ever checked the blue channel under magnification of difficult footage you will know what "chicken scratch" is. That is gone in Build 16. This allows you to dig "deeper" into the shadows during grading with less consequence.

2. Dynamic range. While you subtly gain range because the noise floor is lower, there are other factors that contribute to range. It may seem counter-intuitive but a higher ISO has more dynamic range in contrasty scenes than a lower ISO. Many simply believe that you should select a lower ISO outside in daylight. While this has been discussed here by a few, it has been a struggle at times with previous builds to set ISO and exposure depending on the circumstances. Your meter tells you one thing, the histogram another... and if you get those two to make sense, the LCD looks a bit dark. So there is a temptation to open up your aperture (effectively selecting a lower ISO) and losing range when it wasn't necessary. If you were too cautious the other way, you ended up with a dark image and noise when you dragged it out of the dirt. Build 16, with our new REDspace, does wonders to make all your exposure clues line up better. And with some simple ISO guidance, you will understand why a select few are actually very happy with the latitude of a RED ONE. Some simple tips and your camera will increase in range because you will be getting the most out of it.

3. SDK. Now that we are finishing Build 16 prototypes for Alpha release, we can begin the process of developing the SDK we promised. We fully recognize the importance of more options for our customers. We will march through this process as fast as we can.

There are many more enhancements to Build 16 that will be listed the day the Beta is released. Please don't ask what they are or "if this or that" is included. We don't have a firm Beta release date. That will be determined by the feedback from the Alpha testers.

Thanks again for your patience.

Jim

Thank you so much for your commitment to putting a great tool in our hands.
I am so looking forward to build 16 coming.

Mr Jannard:

I'd love to alpha test if you need more feedback from a different perspective.

Jim, in your opinion, how is this alpha-build? I remember talking to you at NAB and you said they were a lot of early bugs in build 16's infancy.. Just curious if it is SOLID for you?

Hey Shooter.. Unfortunately our Alpha group is full.. we need to keep the size of that team small enough for us to be able to manage the feedback in real time, Most of the alpha testers are Beta testers that ended up taking it upon themselves to give us so much un-requested feedback from Beta builds that we remembered them when it was time to create the Alphas.

We would love to include everyone in the Alpha pool, but unfortunately it would start to be counter productive to grow it at this time..

Is there any problem expected after 16 is in Beta, going back to 15 after installing the Beta?

Fully understandable Mr. Land. If you ever have any specific tests in mind that you or your team would like to do internally but just don't have the time, let me know, I'd prefer to take on a specific assignment rather than offer random feedback anyway. Perhaps you need a series of test shots of a particular test chart under specific lighting circumstances covering a matrix of camera settings and it would take one of your staff members a whole day to go through all of that. I'd be willing to take something like that on even if it means just doing it with build 15 for now and then again once build 16 launches so you can create a comparison thread. Stuff like that...

Jim, HDR shutter speed bracketing please...........please..........

Thanks for the updates. So is the camera going to be rated differently indoors in lower contrast?

If you have a low contrast scene with enough light- rate lower.

If you have a high contrast scene with enough light- rate higher

If you are in very low light- rate higher.

If you are tungsten lit with enough light- rate lower

If this is too complicated, just rate the camera at the new recommended ISO (which we will disclose with the Beta release).

BUT... these are just guidelines. More to come with the build.

Once you go to B16, you will not want to go back... we will be very careful about this release.

Will you be able to go back? Or is this like build 12?

Will an actual sensitivity setting change in the camera be required in different circumstances, or will I still be able to leave it at the "actual" sensitivity of the camera and open up as much without clipping per the histogram?

You will not be able to go back. That is why we are being so careful.

And you can leave it at the new ISO rating if you choose. And you will not clip as much as before.

This is a much better build than 15... much better. You will not want to go back.

Will new post production software be released as well? RedCine, Log and Transfer, Red Alert?

RED Alert! and Quicktime will support the Alpha. REDCINE will join in at either the Beta or full release. We expect Adobe support fairly soon.

To add to Jim's big three... There are also a whole list of "little" new things to build 16 that make it what it is .. I personally couldn't imagine wanting to go back to 15 without these new features, imaging improvements aside.

Sometimes to truly move forward you gotta close the door behind you, just like we did with build 12.. and I think most of you agree that that worked out pretty well.

True... agreed on the build 12 front... but I just wanted to know if I could load a beta onto a camera and then go back to a stable build for a job. But I understand the caution you guys are taking with the development process here... I bet it'll be nice and stable by the time it drops in beta.

So what is the new rating? 400? 500? I never really use a [light] meter to expose the camera, I usually just set the camera to 320 [where the histogram is the most accurate] and ETTR. I've had great results, impressive DR and generally low noise with this broad theory. Looking forward to seeing this new noise characteristic.
