  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bug...

Please correct me if I am wrong, but ...

Canon is about to celebrate its 80th birthday, and they still haven't put a professionally focusable lens on a "Professional" camcorder yet. I owned an XL-1 and I still have nightmares. That is the best example of company complacency I have seen in a long while.

...

Actually that's one of the things the new XF series claims to have.

In my humble opinion, I don't think that I am going over the top. I have spent sometime in digital imaging so my comment is coming from some experience. I have been following Red's development for a long time and this is what I think: Red is a great idea executed at the right time. However, as I said that 4-5 years is pretty darn good amount of time for a technology startup, which was totally un-encumbered by delivery and customer pressure as it was a nascent company.

Moreover, I looked at Red's specs (major ones) and thought could my colleagues and I would have done it in 5 years and the answer was probably yes. So I don't think that I am going over the top and way out of line.

Joofa

No offense.

Jims right. Easier said then done... times a billion!, and all your doing now is getting on peoples nerves.

If you think you could have done a better job or the same job in a better time frame why didn't you?

Just saying. Your a bit out of line there..

Joofa... talk is cheap. You and your colleagues? Really? So you could do what no other camera company has ever done? Really? Then why don't you actually do it and save us the effort? Really? I'll shut down RED and buy yours...

Jim

Mr. Jannard, I am not showing any disrespect for Red. You know that I have always maintained that I greatly admire Red and its efforts, and fully realize that Red has some of the best minds. I just gave my personal opinion what I thought was doable in 5 years.

God. I certainly hope so. However, I wouldn't count on it.

I got a chance to shoot with the Canon XL H1s before it was released to the public, and while the Canon tech was briefing us on the new features over a conference call I had to bite my lip to keep from blurting out, "the lens system still sucks balls".

The image looked really nice, at that time ... and compared to other cameras, but the focus drift was truly pathetic.

Joofa... this is a difficult trick. We have over 200 engineers working on this. And I'm quite sure that we have a small team compared to others.

No offense but this is not easy. We haven't been working on this for 5 years... just a couple. EPIC is entirely different than the RED ONE. The ability to shrink the package by 60% and increase the capability by 500% was an aggressive goal. For you to say that you and your colleagues could do this in a shorter time is just... (no words here)

Truly, if anyone would do this... we wouldn't have to. I'd love to be in Fiji right now without a care in the world. But no one would do this if we didn't push it. I'm convinced that is true...

Time for my blood pressure meds... ugh.

I have to wonder if you really realize how difficult this project is.

Take it easy man. Welcome back. We want you around for a long time :) :). Inhale, exhale... think of cool water.

Not to change the subject, but ...

When you said that the Bomb EVF was minutes away ... did you mean literally or figuratively.

Just want to know if I should warm up the coffee here on the east coast.

The only difference between us and the rest of the industry is that we are talking along the way. If we kept silent about the process and our targets, we would be just like the others. I now can understand why they do it like they do. But I still prefer to keep an open dialog.

Jim

And that's just one thing that sets your company apart. Keep it open.

Transparency with this community and open product development is akin to open software development... you have the benefit of community feedback and involvement in product development, and that results in a better overall solution. You listen and evolve in real time. Yeah it's painful to reveal problems and issues, but I for one would much rather have an open dialog and know you and everyone at Red is striving to break through incredibly difficult barriers to create the elegant tools we all need and want... and can't buy anywhere else.

Humility, honesty, commitment, passion and vision go a long way in my book.

Thanks for everything you and your team does. And thanks for being a maverick.

So please stop feeling bad about the delay and go kill the fucking bug ;)

Its great having you back. We're behind you 1000%.

jim ,

thanks for coming on here. You are probably one of the few who could be doing literally anything they want at any moment.

I just want to say thanks for taking a few to hang with us.

Im in Hawaii not fiji but i say Hang Loose, brah! RED NO KA OI!

Sorry... this is where I would be.

Please Jim, do not get too agitated about every Mr. Smarty Pants.
99% of us are here and wait because we know there is noone else trying to do what RED does.

IF this wasn't so people would realise that:
a) they can only buy a camera of the likes of the big C and live with the downsides.
b) realise that they will never be able to afford a camera that can what EPIC or Scarlet will be able to do.
c) renting cameras is the only option.

In all three cases they needn't be here. :)

Jim those of us who have worked in product development get it.
I believe joofa is coming from a narrow background in either engineering or software development where one string or the other can be years ahead, its bringing the two together in a working logical package is the problem.

Also your not doing the common practice of rehashing an old resign, REDCODE is essentially a base up write of wavelet, not an implementation of an existing codec with some customization, your body designs are not a variant on an off the shelf design, short of possibly some Hassleblad inspiration.

Most companies will have a team the size of your entire operation running one string of that operation, not the whole integrated mess. Be proud in what you have done, and don't lose hope. You have nothing to prove to any of us, remember that, I think I can saley say your more successful than anyone here, you ran and sold a massive company that is unmatched in the marketplace. And it started with Handles.

I think people underestimate your drive, don't listen to them. The Red One are the Handles of Red Digital Cinema. Lets start making sunglasses with the Epic.

Can you believe that the French did their nuclear testing in the Polynesian Islands?

Come to think of it ... we weren't much better.

I believe in RED, and I will wait as long as necessary!

You make a good job. =)

BTW... I own this island. But I choose to be here working on EPIC and delivering the industry what it needs. No line-skipping, 5K, RAW, modular, REDCODE, record to CF or SSD, hold it with one hand... best in the universe... just need to kill one bug... EPIC.

Jim

Truly impressive.

BTW, what happened to the real name policy? I thought Ace was the only exception.
