And you have no idea what the ratio is between failed cameras and healthy cameras.
My ratio so far 2 failed of 3 cameras.
Also 1:2 failed side handles.
I've also had an epic brick I think on one production per year the last 2 years that were rented.
I like my RED images but I am more paranoid of RED equipment failing than any other electronics I've ever bought.
For rentals, it might be desirable for RED to devise a password or PIN protected feature which write-protects the firmware so that only the owner or rental vendor can upgrade the camera firmware. The SI2K has this feature. It is not password protected.
Well RED did limit the access to the firmware upgrade downloads so that only owners can download firmware, and only the ones for which they own the camera.
I'm going to make a suggestion that if you rent your camera out do not allow them to upgrade or downgrade the firmware. You never know if they are taking precautions to use DC power when doing so, or if the camera gets knocked around which can cause possible power interruption. Just my 2 cents.
If you are worried about a firmware upgrade bricking the camera due to power loss, note that this is a VERY VERY UNLIKELY scenario. In fact, the upgrade process was designed to withstand a power loss.
I'm not going to speak on what your rental agreements should or should not say about upgrading the camera firmware as there may be valid reasons to restrict it. I just wanted to ease your concerns about upgrades being able to brick your camera.
I like this idea
An admin stage with software control via script would be helpful.
Anyone nervous about the Dragon upgrade?
