  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bricked NEW EPICs (Quality Issue ?)

I have two Epics in at RED at the moment.
I suspect board-failures in both.
The industry does not really tolerate on-set breakdowns - most of the time the stakes are too high. When a client has to reshoot, which usually means an insurance claim - my life turns bad. I don't need the stress, not to mention the stress of my clients.
In the entire RED universe the most critical aspect of everything is that the cameras work, and instil faith in their users that they are indeed solid and reliable. If there are any cracks / shortcuts in the manufacturing process, then RED needs to address that NOW.
Increase the quality control - increase the price. I would prefer that.

Julian.
3 x Epic-X, 1 x Scarlet.

Guys, we are indeed monitoring this thread. Trust me, we are not taking shortcuts. We have some too far in too short a period of time to ever jeopardize that. Not to mention Jim would kick our collective asses for even thinking of it : )

Our quality control team is always monitoring. If they see smoke, they look for the fire. We take every report of an issue seriously.

Yeah, my scarlet died, 2 weeks later received the epic upgrade notice. Less than 50 camera hours later, it also bricked. It does seem like Epics from this summer got a bad batch of some sub component.

So, is there a fire? Or hopefully was?

I was thinking of purchasing a second epic but these quality issues are definitely not helping

Being on the inside with access to our quality control metrics, I can say you can purchase with confidence.

Hi Brent,

Could you share here, if there is any commonality to these reported failures and, if the failures have, in any way contributed to the Dragon delays, please?

Thank you very much

Fury

Nick, I refer to my prior statement - no reason to not buy with confidence. You guys already know the deal with DRAGON from Jarred's updates. Cannot connect dots when there are no dots to connect....

very well then

Thank you very much

Fury

No worries, man. Happy to clear things up. Trust me, if there was an outstanding issue, we would not be shipping cameras right now.

#6183 - START UP ERROR - A serious error detected during startup

PLEASE NOTE: The camera was replaced by RED EUROPE.

Red doesn't sell their camera by the millions. More like 500 a month. Also consider that most people/companies with camera issues won't post on these forums due to Red's excellent support.
That makes the amount of reported bricked epics even more scary. I wouldn't be suprised if the failure rate is around 25% on the current batch.

Should make a list of bricked cams

#5919 - Red Epic X

#6230 - Red Epic X - 0x000000d error

Hi Brent, I appreciate you joining the forum to clarify the issue, but how good RED is at quality control and generalities, does not explain how so many cameras seem to be systematically bricking. In short, you stopped short of acknowledging there is an issue. A statement on what you are currently doing specifically to address this situation directly with those affected would be appreciated. As I said on previous posts, I love shooting RED and had nothing but great experiences with my Scarlet. But the consistent growth of posts about bricking are making me hesitant to upgrade to an Epic. Specific reassurances would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Antonio

Antonio, you are 100% correct, I was waiting for more data to be able to address this in a more head on manner. The quality numbers did not show a statistically significant spike, but there was a small increase none the less. Taking a big deep dive with our engineering team utilizing information provided by customers who have experienced issues soon after receiving their cameras, we have isolated the cause to a small batch of bad boards from one of our suppliers.

The issue is very difficult to detect over the course of outbound testing as its rate of occurrence is very infrequent. Hence, would pass on our end and then have the issue in the field at some point soon after delivery. So, we have updated our test plans to account for this and are currently combing through existing inventory.

At RED, we know we are only as good as our weakest link. And this board fab issue is no exception. So, effective immediately, if this issue does hit you, please submit an RMA Request. If we get in your camera within 90 days of you taking delivery and confirm it is this issue, we will grant you one additional year of warranty coverage. When there is an issue, we want to make it right.

Brent,
I just took delivery of Epic 6279, is this part of the questionable batch of boards?
Steve

Steve, the issue is that not every board in the batch is "bad" so cannot say one way or the other. If you have any issues, we will take care of you.

Understood…..But how do I "shakedown" the camera so I don't have an issue with it out on a job, which there's never a good time for that to happen. Do I need a backup body on shoots for the first 100 hours? Not a warm fuzzy feeling right now. Does my serial number fall within the batch?

I'd like to know this too. Ordering an Epic or a pre-order on Amira sometime next week and the peace of mind right now on the Epic is not so peaceful.

-Robin.

Robin, we have put in new test procedures so boards are being pre-screened for this issue.

Others who just took delivery, I can understand your trepidation. I don't want the impression that the sky is falling, that is not the case. As I mentioned earlier, this issue has only happened in a relative handful of cameras. So, the risk is still very small of something happening even factoring that in.
