  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Brexit / Red Europe.

I absolutely agree here with Christoffer, I'm glad you started this discussion and yes please, don't make it political guys, let's stay RED.

I still don't understand why RED Germany-Berlin closed its offices at first place? They were doing a great job, they were always on the field teaching RED, they were very responsive in service and what's the most valuable asset to me, it's that they are on a cultural, historical and business approach closer to their neighbours countries such as Poland, Austria, Czech Republic even Slovakia and Hungary. I can tell you that the majority in those countries don't speak fluent english, but they do speak German or Polish and manage to get an even better understanding on those multicultural grounds. It's not just the fact that it's un-natural for us already to trade in British Pounds every service or shopping when the official European currency is Euro (€) but instead that the undeniable fact that Germany is in a more strategic position geographically to cover the demand and save a substantial amount of time and costs in transport.

Now with the story of Brexit it's not a question of "if it's going to happen today or in two years". It is just going to happen and this a big upcoming problem that should be fixed before it's too late. There is a lot at stake, many projects in production on this side of the world as well. RED has been showing us an incredible growth in this past 10 years and have indisputably emended mistakes from the past. I'm sure they'll make the best choice in order to solve this issue on the best interests of their soldiers, all of us. But on my humble opinion, I would say that we need an official RED Europe base and a great candidate would be to re-open RED Germany again.

And yes I'm a little bit complainish, because an AC damaged a 5.0 RED Pro monitor socket on sunday and I shipped it to the UK on Monday for service and today is Friday and still haven't heard from them yet. I believe they might be overwhelmed with work?

I hope the shout gets heard,

Godspeed everyone and good shootings!

Brexit is at least 2years and 3months away. Perhaps even 3-4 years if an early election is called.

The Channel Tunnel, the Internet and low cost airlines did not exist when UK joined the Union. The Berlin Wall was a physical barrier.
Much has changed in the last 30 years.
Industry and consumers are better informed do it is less likely damaging tit for tat trade barriers

To eliminate the costly ATA Carnet, a zero cost import export document existed in the mid eighties for travel between UK and Europe.
Id hope that certain classes of goods will be exempt and a similar document or passport for media equipment could be re-introduced.

Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to stay in Europe.
Scotland's First Minister tonight said that they may well leave the UK and so remain in the EU.
Sinn Fain have suggested that Ireland should reunite, otherwise a customs and immigration border may need to be created.

If so, Red could relocate in Scotland or Ireland and still be in the EU!

With respect to immigration it's likely travel will be more difficult. But modern passports allow entry into a country without facing an immigration officer. You have to show a passport to get into the Uk today.
Again much has changed since Uk joined the EU. In respect to border control Scotland yard criminal and terrorist data bases and immigration data bases were not cross referenced until year 2000.

Large percentages of population of Netherlands, Austria, France and Spain are Eurosceptics, so there is no certainty the EU will exist in its present form in 5 years. Some argue the UK is getting out ahead of the others. A survey in 2012 by TNS, indicated that only 42% of Europeans thought their country was "well looked after" by the EU.

So it is very early days, the top end of town will negotiate hard to make travel and temporary employment between uk and Europe efficient and flexible.

Merged these threads. Keep the politics out of it.

Shorter concise reality/opinion.

For now RED Pinewood isn't going anywhere and perhaps down the line if anything is majorly effected by this RED should open up a new location somewhere in the EU. At the moment I'm not seeing too many "barriers" developing that would make it difficult for RED UK to service customers in the EU as they have been.

Time will tell and will inform decisions moving forward.

So Red could relocate in Scotland or Ireland.

Probably not happening. London is interesting because of Pinewood studios. Berlin is central, an easy access for many countries. In Paris, Besson made some big studios and it's also easy to go there. Scotland or Ireland would be even more a pain to go there than Pinewood.

I feel for my Brit friends as they are all bummed.

Well maybe not all, 51.9% have to be happy since they voted for it.

As for RED, they will be there for their customers, basic capitalism if they want to remain in business. No idea how that will manifest itself, possibly a new store somewhere in the EU, maybe not. Sure it's great to have access to a place that is "local" but come on, how can Europe consider a single store in Pinewood or Berlin for that matter as local? It's on the same continent perhaps, but certainly not convenient. RED is expanding their dealer network as their model at present, and that would be something of more interest to those in the EU I would think.

.

Yeah, I thought it's good that this moved out of the off topic, it's easy to go into politics, but it might be good if moderators have some eagle eyes on this thread so it doesn't steer into that direction (there's a lot of heated discussions in Europe). Better to clean up than close the thread I think if it happens.

I think the barriers at this time won't show, but they might happen based on how Britain handles their border and trade controls. Service is one thing, but there's also the free trading regulations that makes it much more easy for any nation in EU to buy gear from another. Having a center for buying and servicing gear in Euro currency and within EU is better in all regards for EU-members. I'm not suggesting closing down Red Pinewood, but there might be more to this than just related to Red. The whole film and television industry might get some turmoil because of it. So having at least another center for Red customers that's within EU is I think a good idea.

I for one try to handle all my gear purchases within EU since it's lightyears more easy and less expensive than from outside. Red Pinewood had a period when upgrading the Epic Brain was handled with Pounds rather than Euro and it went so far that I changed that upgrade to go through Berlin instead, just to handle everything in Euro and this was with Britain still being a member of EU, just imagine the hassle when they aren't.

Disappointingly and confusedly the UK has voted out...

But we never had the euro anyway and pinewood and the UK is the workng home to some of the biggest films shoots in world for a good number of years. The benefits for Red of being in Pinewood may be complex and compound?

Also the Red team at red Europe are genuinely excellent and one should always invest in people! It takes time to build a team... and it will also take time for any relevant EU change to be implemented (and there is a big 'if' here as well) ....

How about Switzerland?
I know we are not part of the EU. Nevertheless, we have a stable economy and strong currency. Whenever there is an economic or financial crisis people flee and buy Swiss Francs. Switzerland is only a small market in the film industry, however we have one of the highest purchasing power. Something to consider maybe?

Side note, I congratulate Brits for their courage to vote against EU. In 1992 Switzerland - myself included - voted against EU. As it turned out, it was the right decision. We have been doing just fine.

Hello Thaï,
I'm afraid doing well or bad is not an EU thing... But I also would wish Red makes a shop here ;-) but CHF is a pain in the ass for the export market.

Hey Pat,

I know I know. Thanks for your consideration. I am just saying, if EU is not able to undergo a severe reforme - who knows - it will die sooner than one might think.
Then it really doesn't matter where Red HQ Europe will be.

Only time will tell.

I'm not gonna go into political depth about this, but the notion that EU will die off is speculation fueled by nationalistic parties all over EU. There's no benefits of it and I think because of Camerons actions many others will not be so keen on getting a vote on, whatever the people say. So EU will probably be around for much longer than people think and because the most pro-leave voters were in the age of 60+, the longer it takes the less likely such an outcome will be.

So I still think it would be better to relocate the official Europe center for Red to a EU country. There are too many nations involved in the EU to say it would be better to locate the center for Red in a non-EU location. Both Switzerland and Norway already have good trading relations with the rest of the EU and I seriously think that for example Switzerland would benefit more if the center was in Berlin instead of London.

Point being, we shouldn't dismantle Red Pinewood, just open a Red Rep office in a place within EU so us EU members could have easier support and buying gear.

Don't get me wrong. I am not against EU and want it to survive for a very long time. But maybe Brexit is a good opportunity for the EU to make some changes in their system.

Nevertheless, Red HQ Europe in a EU country makes sense of course.

Regarding Switzerland - we have a special situation - as far as I know Red dealer and direct customers pay in US$.
So this won't affect us so much - for the time being.

Setting up the Red official dealer and support for Europe in a non-fully European country was a mistake from the start, but it was understandable because the UK has always been seen by the USA as their additional State ;-) Red didn't listen to their European customers. When you pay everything in Euros, cross the borders as easily as you switch your tv on, adding currency change and customs is obviously a mistake. Even if France is the leading country in Europe regarding the numbers of professional and financed movies shot by year (and the third/fourth in the world, just behind the USA, China and India), I still think it would be a wiser move to located the Red HQ in Germany. Germany has a strong history in technical stuff, cameras, and a reputable good customer support, which is lacking in France (I'm French). They speak English fluently, have a culture and a way of doing things similar to the Anglo-Saxon one, and their central geographic location is great for all the European countries, the UK included. European countries in the East shouldn't be forgotten.

Kristin, I think that it makes sense to have a Red base in London (Pinewood) since a lot of big productions get made there. But after Brexit it would make sense to rebuild the Berlin base and make it the official handler for EU customers. I mean, you can choose to continue going through Red Pinewood for support and store, but the single best thing about EU is how easy it is for us to trade over borders and move equipment between countries, so I think the now closed Berlin office should be activated again, it makes a lot of sense to have a Red office in Pinewood because of the productions there and a EU office for all the EU customers.

I mean, we are talking about 27 countries all with their own private Red owners or companies and productions. Just because Britain has a lot of international big budget movies doesn't mean the rest of the EU lack a large portion of professional production. For me in Sweden it would also be much easier to visit a Berlin office than to fly to London.

Just for clarity - RED now has Authorised Dealers in most of the EU countries; Germany, France, Sweden, Spain, Netherlands..full list is here http://www.red.com/locations/authorized-dealers/europe.
Prices for RED product are in Euros, as they always have been (other than some upgrade exceptions), and the Euro prices are linked to the US Dollar list price, not the UK Sterling. Those prices are duty paid and the goods are in free transit throughout the EU, (including the UK for time being).
Service issues can be addressed with those dealers and any repairs needing to ship to the UK can either go via the dealer or direct.
In fact, a large proportion of repairs which were handed in to our Berlin office were actually carried out in the UK.
The decision to leave the EU should have little or no impact on end users, wherever you guys are located - The UK office already manages the EU, all non EU European countries, the Middle East, North and South Africa, and as far east as India.
We are continuing to invest in and appoint more dealers in order that we can better serve our customer base wherever it happens to be.

As we say in England, "Don't Panic".

Well, that's good to hear and to get clarification on the inner workings, thank you :)

Great, thanx.
Does this mean that we can bring a camera to be fixed to any of these dealers even if we didn't buy it there but from red.com instead, and they will take care of sending it to you?

I am sure it is nothing to worry about for today, but when we remaining europeans want to by something from RED itself (for instance because of the educational pricing) will that still be as easy as today?

The question wether we can send in our cameras (also for upgrades) through any Authorised Dealer is very interesting.
Because I painfully remember what was necessary to send the camera to the US back in the days…
