Bomb EVF Shipping

Bomb-EVF

Bomb-EVF

Well on the "spec" issue....

The manual is correct, the micro-display display used in the RED-EVF is a little taller, but the horizontal resolution is the SAME between the RED-EVF and Bomb EVF. The visual difference though is clear.

The Bomb-EVF uses a newer micro-display which is up to 1-stop brighter and some also say "crisper". Then add in heaters for improved operation in cold weather, lower power consumption, less weight and slimmer profile design....

Stuart, is it possible to eventually tweak the output when the BEVF is hooked up so that those bits of data fit into the vertically smaller frame size? Or is that a limit of the R1 from a hardware standpoint?

Is it possible that the GUI configuration of Epic/Scarlet will be a perfect fit with the Bomb EVF (i.e. everything fits in terms of image and settings/meters), and that the two-button dance is only a necessity on Red One?

Considering that there's one lemo monitoring output on the Epic body that can work with either an EVF or LCD, there's already some auto-detecting going on, and I would imagine Red foresees more use of BEVFs in conjunction with the smaller camera form-factors than the old EVF...my hope is that using an old EVF on an Epic would simply mean that 1280x784 of the available 1280x848 is displayed (very slightly letterboxed, in other words).

As for the resolution change...it's only a 64 line difference. My guess is that a newer, crisper, better display was available, but in the slightly smaller resolution. I'd take the perceived performance increase of the Bomb over the 64 lines, personally...

Does that heater also heat the eyecup? :) Dont you hate when you put your eye socket against a cold viewfinder?

Hi everyone,
We are in desperate need of a Bomb EVF.
Is anyone willing to sell theirs? Please, PM me.
Thanks.

Red watches? That is pretty passive aggressive Mark, don't you think? There is absolutely ZERO strategic advantage for RED to deliberately delay or ignore the EVF program over a Mattebox (or watch), that's fool's logic frankly and if I were RED, I'd make sure you were of one the last people to get one for remarks like that. (But I dont work for RED)

The reason they got behind in the first place was the original EVF supplier WENT BANKRUPT... that screwed RED hard. Plus these are PRECISION devices unike any other other EVF... IN THE WORLD...they are not easily mass produced like carbon fiber MB's and thus take longer to make. They are delivering them on pace of about o 100 to 150 a month or so it seems... (based on my interpretation of this thread)

and with potentially 1000's of people on back order of the original, its going to take months to catch up... meantime, they are innovating and releasing other gear as they can... makes sense to me.

Frustration is one thing, but to say an EVF is not part of RED's agenda is ridiculous imho. Why the hell would they take that stance?

Your correct Tim. .. My apologize to RED :)
Just when you have deposits for these things for almost a year, you get a little bent.

But there is a watch. It came up in the forum, then was deleted the next day. It looked very cool!

I have countless clients shooting 2d and 3d features with the 1st gen EVF and LCD without complaints. I can't really see how not having the new EVF would make life that miserable. Use your deposit for something else or refund and buy 1st gen used and sell when you get the bomb. The constant complaints about delivery dates is pretty tired. I think we all read the fine print years ago. It's not like they are denying us on purpose.

Our new Manufacturing Adult Supervision is definitely starting to show their strengths..... The number of Bomb EVFs going to be one of the first things you guys start to see.. starting today.

I love you guys' job titles. That's exactly what we need at our place. Adult Supervision:-)

Great news!

That good, because Party Robot needs SSD drives and a Bomb EVF. :yesnod:

Ben, don't over-simplify what we are all going through. obviously you aren't one of us that have been waiting for over a year, constantly being told that our EVF, then later Bomb EVF will arrive next month. I have been on "The list" for well over 14 months now. And I can actually document being given an ETA of my EVF only being a few weeks to a month away, at least 10 times over the span of that 14 months! In hind-sight, yes, if you would have told me this was the situation a year ago, sure i would have bought a used one to float me thru this year. Believe me, i considered it. People were actually selling old EVF's for more than what they bought them for new, just to take advantage of our desperation. But way back then, i thought i was only gonna be waiting a few weeks. Not 15 months! I am in the "Camera Rental" business. And no matter what some of the owner operators have said on this forum, a Camera PKG is not a real camera PKG without an EVF. You wouldn't still rent a camera from Panavision if they said "sorry we don't have that part of the camera yet". It makes it really difficult to do be successful when you are missing important components.
That being said, I started talking to the RED people directly. They have been very strait forward, very professional, and very apologetic over this whole situation. Which has made it easier to be patient. And i hope that someday soon this nightmare will be over. And i can start renting a full camera PKG to my clients without having to go hunting for parts.
Also, it has been really nice to hear the wonderful insights from guys like Steve Gibby. Who seem to be RED's beta testers. And can at least give us some insight of what to expect from our products before or after we order them. I hope Steve Gibby keeps on posting. And i hope that when others start recieving their BOMB EVF's, that they will post and let us know, So we can get a more accurate ETA on when to expect ours. My order date was January 2010. & i will definitely let you all know when i get the call!

Fireman Mike didn't see how it was a matter for 'diplomacy'. It's a straightforward question. It's not a matter of image quality; I happily accept the verdict that the new display looks better. The significance of the loss of 100 lines of resolution is that it screws up the data display; there's now this kludge where you have to hit two buttons to tell the system whether you want to see the upper data display or the lower - you can't see both.

Why not just make the new VF the same res as the old one? It seems dumb not to; it's a retrograde step. If that's a question that's so sensitive it needs to be asked 'diplomatically' then frankly I think some people need to grow a thicker skin.

Alternatively of course, tweak the firmware to display the data correctly in the lower resolution(1) Bomb. With either an autodetect for which VF is installed, or a manual setup parameter. Far better than the kludgy upper/lower lines thing; that's just nasty and messy and bad and wrong (to my IT/hacker informed background).

If I don't want to see data, I hit the switch and get rid of it all, use just the frame guides display.

I really didn't expect to get into this as a debate; all I hoped was that someone would point me at an old thread (I've looked but been unable to find) which explained this; then it would have been 'oh, ok, fine, now I get it'. I don't know this stuff because I'm a relative newbie to RED. I ask a straightforward question and get accused of FUD. What, you think I work for Sony? Sheesh.

(1) Lower resolution but better looking, don't get your knickers in a twist! :-)

Mike

Good point Mike! And is that really true? One of the things i always liked about the old EVF's was the cool display on the top and bottom. When ever i am bored while shooting, i can double check my camera settings are all correct. Now i can't do that any more without pushing buttons??? I could personally care less about 80 lines of resolution. Enough people have said the Bomb is brighter and sharper, including Steve Gibby and i believe them. But i am slightly concerned about not getting to see my whole "Cheat sheet" in my Viewfinder. I hope there is a workaround in the works for that?
