"Bomb" EVF naming

What's going on around here lately? First Constantine gets brow-beaten into changing the name of his "politically incorrect" shoulder mount, now we want to dictate to Red what they should name their products?

This is supposed to be a manly man forum where we sit around talking about manly camera issues and such. It's not a sewing circle or a how-to-bake-cupcakes forum! :smilielol5:

Tom...I think I formulated my post with enough care, exactly to avoid the perception of "dictating" or usual pointless bitching to RED. Sarcastic remark was uncalled for.

I could care less about the moral implications of naming an electronic device after destructive weapons or creating a marketing campaign with subtle hints of military influence... but Red's market is to a group of serious directors of photography and digital image technicians who often need to travel globally to various locations to do their job.

With this in mind I would ask Red to please reconsider the naming of the EVF. The day we are stopped at airport security with our equipment, and the no-sense-of-humor bureaucrat pulls a device with the word "Bomb" emblazoned on the side, out of our luggage is the day that Red's naming conventions could potentially hurt the reputation of the DOP simply trying to make it to the shoot on time. The amount of customs and security issues that will arise from this simply outweigh any incentive to write "Bomb" on one of our pieces of very expensive cinema equipment. And Gaffer tape is not bomb-proof (please excuse the pun), it can be peeled off quite easily (and probably will be since it will look suspicious in it's own right) and will raise even more suspicion when the word that's underneath is revealed.

I know I would never wish to buy a piece of equipment that could potentially harm my reputation even if it only means being one hour late to a shoot. It's simply a bad idea.

Just my $.02.

Well, Jarred already offered a solution to that, namely

Tape is not a solution, it is a patch.

I love the name, if I never had to board a plane with the "RED BOMB EVF"
I would pay extra to have a bomb name like that on my RED gear. I however have had the experience of having airport security and security at the US border go through my equipment piece by piece looking for ... something.

What happens when that one guy, you know the one who is particularly zealous, lifts up the tape and sees the word "BOMB"?

If you think this is trivial and a waste of valuable mindspace, perhaps you are not one of those people that gets that extra bit of scrutiny when you go through checkpoints.

You know... I'm pretty sure this is why Wile E. Coyote had all his ACME gear shipped ground rather than via air...

Context is everything. Having a jolly good time in a creative session and jokingly naming products "bomb" or "terrorist" may seem like a good idea in our little corner of the universe, but in the world at large, it's not a joking matter.

There's nothing funny about human beings having their limbs torn off and their flesh burned away.

While certainly not in the same category as wanton destruction of life, unwanted attention from airport security is not desirable.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Humble +1 on leaving the name off it, why worry? Tape might make some idiot even more concerned. Of course it would take an morron, or a paranoid person, to give you a hard time, but... you can't really get pissed at them. Getting pissed at some dude making a buck and trying todo their job hoping to keep us safe doesn't make sense either. I say, why bother? Leave it off. Just my not-very-concerned-about-this-whole-thing 2 cents.

Sorry, my friend. :blushing: That Road Runner and Coyote joke was aimed at airport screeners, not at you. Just ignore the other jokes about cupcakes, I was only joshing.

I think people are taking all of this WAY too seriously, though. I hope Epics start shipping soon, so we will have more to talk about around here!

O.K. - You changed my mind. While I think it is stupid that some security officer might stop me for carrying an obviously harmless piece of equipment with the letters BOMB on it, I would feel even more stupid if stuck in a situation with said security officer when I should be filming.

Thus I would propose one of these solutions:

1.) Leave the name off altogether. Just RED.
2.) As suggested, call it the BMB EVF, but keep marketing it as the Bomb.
3.) Go the other way, and call it LOVE EVF.
4.) Use some jarredian, and call it the "BADASS EVF".

P.S: With English not being my first language, I checked the meanings of Bomb over at thesaurus.com. I was surprized that some of them had purely negative connotation (besides the obvious, weapon one). E.g. at position 3:
Definition: fail miserably
further down the list
Definition: uninteresting
Definition: failure

Renaming this item means a retool (or two) and a delay of at least 90 - 120 days. This concern should have been addressed by the forum when it was first introduced. If there's this much concern about travel you could FedEx it to your hotel, or Red could contact the Department of Homeland Security to have the item vetted and placed on the approved items directive. If the security at another nation's border crossing or port of entry wants to f**k with you, they will find a reason, believe me. Personally, I don't think it will be a problem.

I got machine guns drawn on me in Madrid because two tubes of paint (Cadmium Red and Cadmium Orange-- which are radioactive) had arranged themselves like a pistol in my backpack during a security screening.

You're also a CIA operative. I think it was more that than the radio active paint.

If RED decided to rename, and this is entirely up to them (hopefully this discussion hasn't pissed you guys off : ) we are just expressing our opinions here for their consideration. I'll be buying the BOMB regardless.

---If Red decided to create a new mold for the EVF casing at some point; the BOMB ones would immediately become collector items, hell I would buy one of those for my RED.

I would of course get a Squishy LOVE EVF for my traveling Epic X. Just so that I don't have to become too friendly with this guy...

This is a deadly serious issue. I can't believe that RED will actually sell the thing with the word Bomb engraved on it. People have been turned round and deported from Heathrow for less. Its a tactic to encourage a certain paranoia about what you travel with and its endorsed by all our governments.

You can forget ever shipping one outside the US if its on the paperwork.

Hehe... funniest thing I've read all day. :)

Imran Farouk;521198...I go bak and forth between Singapore and the UK and Dubai. I know SG and Dubai would listen to reason ...[/QUOTE said:

Ah yes, the wonderfully understanding, accommodating, helpful and informed world of Dubai customs.

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA.

I wish I could take my RED "BOMB" EVF and go back to the Leave it to Beaver days.

Nobody would hassle me about it because common sense was popular back then.

I learned along time ago Chris that we can't make everyone happy. We really do try to, but it doesn't always work. That said, we are listening as we always do.

The thread is amusing to me because people get incredibly passionate about the oddest things... I always wonder to myself how those people react in situations that actually call for alot of drama :)

They tend to ignore the actual problem and scream at someone else for something completely unrelated. I thought you worked in the film biz and knew the drill?
