"Bomb" EVF naming

easy on the personal attacks boys. let's be cool. RED may or may not decide to change the name and/or leave it off the EVF. the requests have been made, the discussion has been had, there's not much more to say.

personally i don't have a problem with it, don't have a problem with RED's nomenclature, and do have a problem with actual, violent crimes. i'd venture to guess most could somewhat appreciate and agree.

but if it's on there when you get it and you're one of the ones that doesn't like it... get your dremel tool out and polish it off. no big deal. there are always solutions if you are genuinely concerned about airport security. let's just try to leave some of this unhelpful emotionality out of it please - it's not necessary or helpful.

in D.C. one time I got a patriot pop instead of a bomb pop. it was pretty good, and kind of funny to joke about, but the bomb pops are definitely better.

I learned along time ago Chris that we can't make everyone happy. We really do try to, but it doesn't always work. That said, we are listening as we always do.

The thread is amusing to me because people get incredibly passionate about the oddest things... I always wonder to myself how those people react in situations that actually call for alot of drama :)

Not to belabor the point, but I guess I'm one of "those people", so I'll respond one last time.

I do believe that you try to make everyone happy, and that of course, that is impossible. However, in this particular instance, I fail to see the reasoning. You can make some people chuckle at a cute/ironic/badass name while potentially causing harm in lost time and hassle to your customers, or you could take the name off the product (don't even change the actual name), and people can buy the item without worrying about possible consequences while traveling. So, which way makes everyone happy, outside of a few folks who might be ever-so-slightly disappointed that you 'caved' to 'those people' who are thinking a bit ahead to the potential consequences of an inappropriately named product?

As to a situation that calls for a lot of drama, here's one: sitting and watching your flight depart without you as security folks question you about every piece of gear in your kit because one of them said 'BOMB' on it. I know how I'd react in that dramatic situation, especially if I missed my big commercial gig where I was going to show off my brand new EPIC. I expect I know how the clients would react as well.

I fail to understand why folks insist on blowing off the potential hassle that will be caused by this branding decision. Jarred, you yourself mentioned that your engineer questioned it from the start. Where does he stand on the question these days? Is he amused?

Ha ha Milan. I got one even better then that. I had a friend with homemade Makita battery power for an Arri S on a trip back from shooting snowboarding in South America. It kind of looked like a bomb like all taped up with wires coming out. He thought it would be funny to write "bomb" on it in sharpie. At security in Chile they found the "joke" bomb. They took his bag with his camera, lenses, all his shot film from the trip and the Makita battery with the word bomb on it and blew all of it up. He lost all his gear and his film from the trip. He never put the word bomb on any of his gear again.
Pretty sketchy stuff for sure with a word like that on your gear especially in this day and age.

Just saying. :)

Ok. Take a thin piece of metal. Get it laser engraved with whatever name you like. Take some superglue.
No security guard will be able to pull that one off.

For a less permanent, but more security-resistant than Gaffatape, solution, I'm sure ET or another 3rd party can be convinced to build a little mechanical apparatus that snugs around the EVF, can be screwed fast with a couple of screws, and hide the disliked name.

I'll do one better...

you know those silcon cases for iphone and ipods etc. ?

well could RED be so kind as to make one for the Bomb EVF.

That way, all of the people here that are freaking out, snug your EVF in one and BOMB is cleared away! better yet, tape it and I'm sure security won't go skits over taking it apart, just power it on...

if not RED then a third party :)

problem solved...now lets move on

FWIW, any concern on my part has nothing to do with any military connotations.

It (and it's not a lot) is due to an overwhelming desire to avoid a full cavity search at the gloved hands of some officious TSA/Airport security individual on a power trip. There is a vile set of smilies on another forum that demonstrates this point rather excellently.

So who are you making happy by calling it Bomb? :)

May I also add that I find your military themed Porsche really cool - I say that without an ounce of sarcasm.

I hope that doesn't sound too creepy/stalker-ish since we've never met. ;)
I couldn't help but notice it in the parking lot.....

wait Jarred has a Porsche? I assume it's a Cayenne...He makes a 911 look like a go cart.

I once got asked to power up a laptop going through airport security, back when that was how they screened computers. I had been doing a press tour for a game called Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries, and the laptop was just in suspend mode. When I opened it up for security, a big graphic saying "Mercenaries" flashed on screen. For a second there, I was afraid I would be detained, but they actually were smart enough to understand that a real mercenary wouldn't broadcast it with fancy graphics.

Might the word bomb cause a problem somewhere? Maybe, but I love the name and I hope it stays. If I wanted antiseptic products from risk-averse companies that were afraid to offend anyone, there are other camera companies out there. Their product aren't as good in my opinion, and their attitude might just have something to do with that.

Personally, I like that Red has attitude, and I applaud them for it. I think that rebelliousness is a trait possessed by many innovators, and it actually reassurres me immensely that Jarred isn't going all corporate PR apologetic on us. But maybe that's just me. The worriers can buy a classic evf and content themselves that they played it safe, even if it's huge and heavy ;).

Tim just made my christmas card list :)

Can't believe I'm about to write this:

But I totally disagree with RED on this one. I think all of the airport secuirity concerns about having the word "BOMB" engraved on the EVF are 100% valid. The average airport screener has no idea what an EVF looks like, or even what the hell an EVF is. All they know is that there is some weird mechanical thing that has the word "BOMB" on it. It is their job to inspect and investigate anything that even seems remotely suspicious. That is the world we live in today.

What good does having the word "Bomb" engraved on the EVF do?

Nothing.

It serves no purpose except to look bad ass. What harm can come from having the word "BOMB" engrave on the EVF? Quite a bit.

Best case, you get pulled out of line and the TSA inspects every piece of your gear. Worst case someone overreacts, the police get involved, your gear is confiscated or even destroyed and you get charged with a felony for making a bomb threat. Airport security does NOT have a sense of humor. The word "BOMB" and airports do not mix.

It is really stupid that more people don't have common sense. I know you guys love the name of the Bomb EVF, but you should really think about the real world implications of this. I'm sure the name won't change, and it will be on all the EVFs.

P.S.
I can't wait for the "The Bomb EVF F'd me at the airport.....again" Thread.

Hey guys you don't need to buy it if you are worried about it... you really don't... our feelings wont be hurt, I promise.

Some people out there don't like the "character" of our products, or our company, and that is ok.
There are much more conservative options for you out there.
