"Bomb" EVF naming

still don't see a problem but I do understand the concern...

I guess some people don't like their cameras to resemble weapons. Other than ethical reasons, if you ever find yourself filming in a war zone, the last thing you'd want to do is walking with a bazooka looking thing on your shoulder. ;)

I'll also give you a funny anecdote.... an intern of ours flew with us on a shoot to Germany. We changed planes at Heathrow and had to go through security again. He pulled his laptop out which had a stencil style, vinyl Grenade sticker on it (Grenade gloves - a snowboarding company). It's a sticker on a laptop, k?
Well, he got pulled out of the line, had to go through secondary and they made him take the sticker off. We almost missed the connecting flight.

If you fly often in the US, you probably know how little regard TSA has for handling the expensive film gear. I really don't want to give them any reason to go through my equipment. And believe me, if you carry stuff that resembles weapons and carries the word BOMB on it, there's a pretty good chance that you will not find your gear the way you originally packed it when you land on the other side. And yes, I know that doesn't make any sense... but that's the reality.

Just saying. :)

For a company that prides itself on listening to its users, the choice of "Bomb" as the name for a camera component shows serious disrespect for those purchasing it, especially since the word is emblazoned boldly across the item.

"Hey, it's just a name" doesn't cut it here. Who among us would not be even a little uncomfortable bringing this thing on a plane with them? How many of us at some point will be stopped, questioned, delayed, or otherwise hassled because of a petulant decision not to reconsider the name of a supposedly professional piece of equipment? I'd suggest that there will be instances where security people doing their jobs (properly, I might add) may cause RED owners to miss flights, causing them to miss their jobs, and hurting their careers. One might consider that scenario to be far-fetched, but I certainly don't, and in the end, why is there any need at all to risk it?

Yes, RED has a corporate culture of a bunch of genius boys set free to create really awesome toys and to do as they darn well please, because, well, they're geniuses. I'm quite excited about the new toys coming in the coming year, but seriously boys... grow up.

Ha ha Milan. I got one even better then that. I had a friend with homemade Makita battery power for an Arri S on a trip back from shooting snowboarding in South America. It kind of looked like a bomb like all taped up with wires coming out. He thought it would be funny to write "bomb" on it in sharpie. At security in Chile they found the "joke" bomb. They took his bag with his camera, lenses, all his shot film from the trip and the Makita battery with the word bomb on it and blew all of it up. He lost all his gear and his film from the trip. He never put the word bomb on any of his gear again.
Pretty sketchy stuff for sure with a word like that on your gear especially in this day and age.

Haha, ok I see the point of airport officials being rather close to idiots etc. and I guess less willing to find the love for these products and the idea of their expense. (wish that one could sue for wrongful treatment of goods but that'd be just a long stretch and off topic!)

So why not just go with the idea of having "bomb evf" with part and serial number etc. on the bottom of the unit and have EVF on the side with a mini un-abbreviated form of it right under but within the space of the EVF.

Just wondering, why hasn't this discussion come up before when RED mentioned "BOMB" evf?

So far I associate the RED naming with the “revolution in the resolution”
The technological shift is so sadden and out of the box that it is real revolution.
And as any violent revolution it is closely associated with “armed forces” thus the terminology.
I put armed forces in the quotation marks since RED is really armed force against the thinking in the box.
If you would understand very well what is going on here you would probably relax a bit when it comes to some naming being used.

The thread is most certainly not stupid. I guarantee you some REDuser somewhere is going to be delayed at the very least due to questioning, because they are trying to pass through airport security with the word BOMB on a piece of their equipment.
The concern is as simple as that really.

Most of us, as do I, love the nomenclature of RED. We should however be cautious of giving folks whose power derives from their ability to Fup your day, an excuse to exercise that power.

Does the EVF actually say BOMB on it? That would be kinda bad call as it will be stopped by airport security all over the place- especially with the sleek high tech Bond looks. I hope it's just the nickname and will not be anywhere on the actual gear.

What's going on around here lately? First Constantine gets brow-beaten into changing the name of his "politically incorrect" shoulder mount, now we want to dictate to Red what they should name their products?

This is supposed to be a manly man forum where we sit around talking about manly camera issues and such. It's not a sewing circle or a how-to-bake-cupcakes forum! :smilielol5:

Yes per this picture it is on the side of the EVF in sight. RED won't change it I bet. I would believe they have already made hundreds of these bodies and won't spend the money to change it, rather just defend it poorly.

We are going to talk to a local machinist about removing it from the side of the EVF if they do go with it being on there. I'll post some information if the final EVF's have it and see if we can get a group rate on having it removed.

I would not be surprised if this EVF becomes a banned item to take on planes.

Does anyone think that actual bombs have the word "Bomb" on the side of it? The only time I have seen that is in a Road Runner cartoon when the Coyote orders his bombs from the Acme company.

Yeah, they should have just called it the Warm Squishy Love Monster EVF instead.

What a stupid thread.

Id ask you to rethink that opinion after trying to get gear through Customs in this part of the world.

Lets forget for a second about the naming of the object, and assume that like me, you are trying to carry gear into the country through aiport customs here.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that you will be stopped at the first baggage Xray if you have a RED in your handbaggage. All the other luggage is scanned as its loaded off the plane, and anything interesting will be tagged for later inspection.

Im pretty sure up to this point, this is all standard procedure all over the world. I only reiterate it to show that I get stopped with my gear every time.

Now, the fun part, which may or may not be unique to here, is the Wheel of fortune like game of chance you play called:

"who happens to be on duty in the customs office today?"

Sometimes, you will breeze through, if youve brought all the right paperwork.

Other times, paperwork or no, (and by sometimes, I mean most times) you will be there for hours. This is because every now and then you get a guy who doesnt like the look of you, or is having a bad day, or just doesnt have a clue. This is when you run into trouble because of little things.

I had gear detained simply because there was paperwork in the bag with "Bomb Squad" written on it.

I had magic arms confiscated when Fedex shipped them with "Israel" as the point of origin, and "Arms" in the description.

Having the word Bomb on the side of the EVF just seems a bit unneccessary. I dont think any other viewfinders have big print on them like that?

However. All this being said and done.....

Couldnt we just put a bit of camera tape over the name when travelling?

Remember, some terrorists just aren't that bright. There is a chance that RED might actually end up selling a lot of EVFs to people like Richard Reid (the ill-fated shoe bomber).

I think it will definitely cause problems at airport security, and I hope that you folks post those incidents on REDUser when they occur. That could be a lot of fun to read. "What is this? It says 'bomb' right on it!"

Stephen

Regardless of our opinions, I really don't see them changing the name. Jim likes things to be badass, and that's the way it is.

Yeah, they should have just called it the Warm Squishy Love Monster EVF instead.

Thank you for starting my day with a laugh (and for putting things into proper perspective.).

Though, I must say that I am intrigued by that alternative name :)

I guarantee you some REDuser somewhere is going to be delayed at the very least due to questioning, because they are trying to pass through airport security with the word BOMB on a piece of their equipment.

Well, Jarred already offered a solution to that, namely

Does anyone here lives near an airport?

Why don't you try an interview with some head of the security there, bring your RED along, some lights and makes a small interview asking the guy about this subject.

That would be helpful.
