  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Bomb EVF manual and flicker

Has anyone come up with an answer to the bomb EVF strobing issues? The strobing I get appears to be similar to the strobing with the RED One without the Open Gate set. Is there a similar setting on the Epic that I haven't found yet?

My EVF (the old one) died on me and I just had the panel replaced. It came back and now has all sorts of RGB-strobing issues and very odd color-rendition. Much worse than before it died. I think the newer generation LCD panels are worse quality than the original ones and that I got a new generation LCD put into my EVF. After Christmas is over I'll go to a local rental house and compare it to both old ones and new Bomb EVFs and see if I can make some kind of sense out of this. If I'm able to prove that the new LCD installed in my EVF is a worse quality one than the one I had in it to begin with then I'm going to demand a significant amount of the repair cost back.

Sorry to hear about your problems Tony. The new Bomb EVF I received strobes so much it's hardly usable! Yet, no one seems to be talking much about it. I've started a ticket with RED to see about this but they didn't have much of an idea about although they've offered to have me send it in to double-check whether it's up to spec.

Am I the only one having problems with a Bomb EVF on the Epic-M/X?

Yup its a British thing ...
A tinker was originally an itinerant tinsmith, who mended household utensils. The term "tinker" became used in British society to refer to marginalized persons. In this later sense, "tinker" may mean:
Irish traveller, a nomadic or itinerant people of Irish origin
Scottish traveller, a nomadic or itinerant people of Scottish origin
Gypsy.

But to get back on track is the only way I can reduce strobing and the jello effect in the EVF by using the open gate setting? Im getting a good image on my monitor ..It only looks bad on the EVF?? This can't be right can it? I'll keep" tinkering" with the settings.. but in the meantime it would be good to have a Guru chime in here and help a poor Brit out :-)

I agree,
I heard so much good things about the EVF but when we got ours I hooked it up... realized it looked like shit, tearing and strobbing and being extremely hard on the eye. worse than my Hi8 camera 20 years ago...

It would be great to know this is something that should not be. Have not used it since then...

Yes...

Going through the exact same thing....

Please report back. Mine is in for evaluation this coming week. I hope the fact that not many people talking about it implies that it's an isolated issue.

Sent it in this past week. I'm sure I'll hear something after the new year, I'll be sure to post. - Tom

Mine doesn't strobe, but my image is washed out like Others and I think my heater is on too. I tried the black shading with the EVF attached as there was a theory that would help but it hasn't. Going to shoot the next two days with it to see what happens.

Hi guys. Are there any updates on these issues? Anybody sent their Bomb EVF in and got it back better for example? Or has anyone discovered some obscure menu option which has made things better? Many thanks!

Would be nice to have an official word from RED here. Are there any plans for a firmware upgrade to improve performance? Mine came back from evaluation as performing at peak performance however I don't consider it to be performing to the same standard as the original EVF. I love the form factor but can anything be done to improve the picture degradation?

Jon, this is why I'm sure it's worth my while to send mine in...although it is unsusable with the flicker as it stands. I wish I could film the view of the EVF to show what it's doing....

We also had cutlers, who would knock on doors to see if people had knives that needed sharpening.. a kind of specialist tinker, not to be confused with rag 'n bone men.. , still a few of them roaming Bradford occationally.. with renewed interest in recycling, and high ore prices, they may be making a come back.. if they're not too busy removing church roofs for the lead ;)

People here just use the Bomb EVF for framing purposes only.. Most of them are hesitant to judge the image through it. Waiting on a new firmware to see if there will be any improvements.
