  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Blackmagic Design is rumored to announce a new L-mount cinema camera on September 14

NYC Sample Clip
Blackmagic Cinema Camera – Gallery | Blackmagic Design

Now Unfortunately this time with the Sample BMCC6K Full frame Camera sample clips, only the "Graded" clips are available for download with no Braw Samples. So I regraded the REC709 Graded clip in Aces.

I don't know, Rand, that color work looks pretty dim and reddish-orange, is your color calibration on point?

The grades are from screengrabs from the Video above it which was dim and I didn't want to push the screengrabs too much. The grade was meant to be a more "Teal/Orange" color Like the grade in post #151.

Hey Rand, followed your link to the sample gallery and the short BRAW sample files from Vance Burberry are there now.

Playing with some of the other samples in motion - https://youtu.be/yY5HooceDXM?si=f0RNo9011vrDbP6w

I like the image quality and the flexibility of the BRAW files, looks to me like the camera can capture some nice images if shot well.

Les,

Stupid me, I had my screen enlarged so i didn't see the link to the actual Braw files. Thanks for the heads up!

Different Grade with Braw this time instead of .graded REC709 .Mov file. Graded with ACES.

Your grades make my prior ones look dull, so here's a slightly punchier version done without adjusting the actual saturation or digging into the artifacts in the shadows...

...but that's as far as I'll push it (and I'm never giving up the green and blue look dammit :chuncky: !)

Edit - Interesting though to see your JPG grades with some basic Brightness/RGB/Contrast/Gamma tweaks -

Nice that the camera can capture images capable of being shifted around like that.

You never want to lose too much information in the shadows when you grading. I crushed the shadows more than the original images from Vance to give it more depth. Also when I grade multiple images, I grade as if all the images will be part of one story. So if you are going to make one scene or image look a certain way you have to be prepared to make all the scenes before and after it look the same way also. A good example of this was the Teal/ Orange look I used on multiple stills in post #143. That includes Exposure, Tonality and Color or else it will just look like a photo collage of some trips that you took.

Here's an example video also of some of the other BMCC6K samples clips I made over a month ago.

For those whom don't want to watch the video to see the graded other BMCC6K sample images, here are the stills. With two modified scenes from the video from a month ago.

Thanks for the extra pics and info Rand, I find it useful for helping me clarify my own thoughts and aims, in regards to this camera in particular and other aspects of colour grading in general as well.

Les,

Those are really just my grading interpretations of those files, any other grades are just as valid as the ones I posted.

Dang, that Raptor comparison is so bitingly close! Forget color, that can always be changed or matched with software, the definition is there and the overall look is there and the price difference is not even competitive, the Blackmagic is literally a ton of bang for the buck if it's that close! RED wins hands down for overall features but if this were 8K vs. 8K instead of 8K vs. 6K then RED may need to hurry up with the next round of DSMC3 or even DSMC4.

Zack,

Yeah, they looked really close and I was impressed by the BMCC6K camera. However they both were tested under good lighting. I think the V-raptor would show it's true colors under less than ideal lower lighting conditions. I really haven't tested how well the Braw codec does under stressful post grading, but I'm sure the Red Raw codec would more than likely shine there as well.

“I was super excited to be able to use full frame lenses that I use in my still photography on a digital cinema camera. One of my absolute go to lenses is a Leica Vario Elmarit SL, 24-90mm. I find it very versatile. Here I’m using it at 90mm, wide open at f4. We added a gobo that we shook around a bit to get this effect. A simple conversion to black and white, and I really like how it came out.”

“I’ve never been totally satisfied with having my lenses cropped into either Super 35 or Micro-Four Thirds format. It’s just not what I’m used to seeing through my still lenses. So seeing the glorious full frame image of a lens that I know very well made a big difference to how I created these shots.”
