Blackmagic Design is rumored to announce a new L-mount cinema camera on September 14

New BMCC6k FULL FRAME | ANAMORPHIC 6:5 Footage | Laowa 35mm T2.4 Nanomorph

BY Michał Palikot

This is a great video of what the Blackmagic 6K camera can look like. The video below is from the prior generation S-35BMPCC 6K (Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K)and not the newer BMCC6K FF (Black Magic Cinema Camera 6K Full-Frame) camera. I think different "TONE-Mapping", Color and Contrast ( Based on 18% Gray for the workflow that you are in) would go a long way for making the images looking less like images from a cheaper camera to images from a more expensive camera. I think the "Tone Curve" provided by most manufacturers for most lower budget cameras is one of the reason some people shy away from them along with Color and Dynamic Range. Examples of what I mean below the video below. As always graded in ACES and I kept the original "Greenish" theme of the original grade.

Rand, I respect your contributions to this website enormously, but aside from the flat, greenish image lacking in any color, it seems to lack any dynamic range whatsoever. Blacks are crushed and it's ultra soft.

And I respect your Honest opinion . I tried to modify the original image which is from the previous S35 version of the BMCC6K which does have a limited dynamic range of maybe 13 stops or less. I slightly lowered the overall brightness of the image by 1/5th of a stop and used some additional "Tone-mapping" techniques which may have darkened the shadows at least in my redos. Yeah I tried to keep the original "Greenish" look either the poster of this video wanted to go with or maybe failed to correct, either way it was a look that he wanted to go with. I think ND filters are more important for cameras with smaller Dynamic ranges to better control highlights that are more likely to not be recoverable in post. I think the original poster of this video might have been going for a more "Shallow" DOP field look and might have missed focus more that not. I believe good images can be obtained from the Blackmagic Cameras if you don't challenge their limitations and if you find an effective way to negiate the Rolling Shutter.

I think also the originator of the video tried to expose for the dark cavernous areas of the Rock formation that she is recorded next to and had to make the decision to let her skin and sky go a little over-exposed also loosing color in the skin. This was based again on the limited dynamic range of the camera.

Here again is another redo from the original Jpeg video captures with slightly different tone-mapping and not affecting the Shadows further using the "LAB" Color Space with "Channel 1(L)" to decrease contrast and maintain Saturation based on the 18% Grey of ACES. Again you can only do so much with the original REC709 Gamma 2.2 or 2.4 image.

Blackmagic should add an APS-H or "5K" crop, which would bring the rolling shutter under control, while offering nice framing options like standard anamorphic crop and using the sharpest clearest parts of stills lenses.
