  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

I think me and Ted should switch.... Ted is way too nice to be played by Piven, and I yell way too much to be played by Ashton :)

But you see that's the genius of Jeremy Piven; I'm sure he can do a convincing Ted. Ted is nice, but upbeat. Piven can definitely do him.
Jarred, I get the feeling Vince Vaughn would be great for your part. You know, the smirk, and the loud voice. But he's got dark hair; we'll have to give him a dye job.

"...plus remote focus and iris control from RED’s SuperGrip™"

I am in deep need of one of these coupled with one of Curt's motors for my S16 zoom... It would also be great when breaking the kit down to light weight efp mode using the Birger mount w/eos zooms and the Red SuperGrip for zoom/camera control.

Jarred, is something along these lines still in development at Red?

Thinking back on this... did the SuperGrip get shelved by Red and picked up by the VFS/ET cabal for the near future? :)

Any info from anyone in the know would be great.

Thanks,

Benz (been lurking in this thread since it's inception, still on the fence though... waiting as well:) )

vince vaughn sounds good for Jarred...

I can be played by micheal moore.. should he decide to act.. artie lange would be the best viable option. I do not see a Jason Alexander in me. LOL.

Technically upgrade path opportunity should be canceled as per our warranty policy, but that's not what us at RED would consider fair. We put ourselves in the customer shoes.. and since this last issue is clearly a communication error outside the Customer's hands, It would be pretty weak if RED screwed you guys for it..

OFFICIALLY, from this day prior, we will wipe the slate clean for those customers that did non-certified installs. Just send Brian an email ( upgrades@red.com ) to let him know that you did the upgrade yourself and your upgrade path to EPIC-X will not be affected.

For those of you that have not installed the mount yet, I would hold on till Birger resolves the clerical issues. Its up to him ( and his insurance company) to choose if he wants to accept the liability of certifying every random customer as that install in no way is covered by RED at all... And of course we just need to know the cameras that have the certified install.

Thanks Jarred (and RED) for looking after us; I'll email Brian.
Merry Xmas and very very Happy New Year to you all at Red (and Birger).
Cheers

Ok guys, I tried to figure out if there's asolution nobody has thought about so far, and this is what came into mind:

What about if one gets first Andy's dumb mount. If I've got it right it does have a connector on the side leading to the connectors of the actual lense. Then if Erik just packed Birger electronics in a small box and made the required cable, as a result we had a mount that did not force anybody to remove the front end but still enabled us to use Curt's knob, the bluethooth link etc.

This is actually not a bad idea. It seems that the control box could be much smaller than Andy's since Erik was able to cram all of the electronics into the mount itself.

One of the benefits of the Birger is the fact that there are no external control boxes... that it is a self-contained solution. Your suggestion might be of interest, but the control box would have to be very small, or better yet, be incorporated into another component, like the control wheel. One of my complaints with Andy's mount is that it has a large box, with a relatively small wheel. If it was a large wheel, that also had electronics to control the mount (like the Impero), then I might be reconsidering.

How small is big?

Anyway, don't want to turn this thread into a Andy-vs-Erik debate.

I love the outside-of-the-box thinking: Maybe the solution of Andy supplying the mount and Erik plugging in his electronics/software could be the heaven-sent solution?

Xmas holidays are here ...merry X mas , happy Chanukah, happy new year

my Red will be a year old ... thought i'd have a birger last Feb/mar ..or was that april/may ? well , now have one & i can't use/install it ...

i don't have time to go thur hundreds of past post ...
IMO we need to have a DATE set when everything is laid out in front of us with approx ship/fix/install info/dates ..

i have a birger mount ... i need to know the following
1) i hear it need some kind of update ? or something = perhaps back focus issues ??...
2) installation ... i hear it needs to be by certified tech ...
3) FF unit ...wireless remote
4) others want to know when their units will be shipped ...

so how about by Jan 15, 2009, give us ALL info for the above ...
start a new thread in 2009... 1st post should have solid info on current status and anwser to above ....

thanks
a PAYING customer

Donatello,

Jan 15th is too late for "info". If I don't have my mount by the 15th, I'll show up at Birger's door and take it by force, and since I've already paid for it, I might even have the local constable standing behind me when I do it. ;-)

Call Erik if you haven't already, and I'm sure he can get you squared away with your updates and installation woes.

Jarred, thanks for that. Muuuuuuch appreciated! I e-mailed Brian.

Another chapter of the Birger drama ends well. Amy should start posting here, she is a psych nurse...
I e-mailed with Erik, he is going to get the warranty issue resolved.

Merry X-Mas http://www.octamas.com/xmas_e.php, shot on RED with Birger and Canon 16-35mm.

Erik, Did you know about the installation requirements and if so how come you didn't let us know?

For those of you that have installed the mount, does this drama, reflect the reality of the instal?

Jarrad, a lot of us believe that the Birger mount creates a better red camera system. We believe it is more than a third party application. We believe that it enhances the red experience greatly and helps Indies step up to the promised revolution by offering a competitive ground. We also believe that in the end it will help red sales rise (specifically as we are going onto the newer models) By helping Birger by whatever way possible, to lessen the road blocks and provide positive solutions, will ultimately help us, your customers, and I believe the time spent "baby sitting" will return very valued yields in return for Red, exponential in design.
I fully supported red when they were behind schedule and information got lost in noise, and when things went wrong... Thousands of people gave red the benefit of the doubt which is what was needed to get through... So now i look at Erik and think why should he deserve anything less? Is there something I am missing here? A bit of information that is not coming forth? Or is he small fry and not valued? Or does red see no value in what he is doing? I'm seriously really trying to work the whole thing out.

In my experience the installation of the Birger mount was every bit as straight forward as the installation of the Nikon mount. I know there is a difference between them in terms of the invasive depth of the installation, I'm just saying that the Birger install was no more hair-raising than the install of the Nikon mount. One needs to go very slowly and be very careful with any such technically demanding piece of work.

I very much agree with supernovafilms' thought that the Birger mount is for many of us an absolutely essential piece of the puzzle.

My newest episod of the drama is a customs and tax invoice received from FedEx this afternoon. However, the FedEx pages still say "Package data transmitted to FedEx" but nothing beyond that, so their contribution was to hire Chaplin, or is it Jerry Lee Lewis to this drama.

Nevertheless, best wishes for Christmas/happy holidays for Erik, Amy and all the other 13 month veterans of this thread. :-)

My sentiments exactly.

I had to send back my Red after it proved impossible to remove the hex screws. Trying to remove the PL mount to install the Nikon was like doing brain surgery on myself. The Birger mount is very easy if you take your time to understand what your doing.

There was a moment when it seemed like losing the option to upgrade to Epic X was a loss but just for the moment. I'm a full thirteen monther here and committed to Birger some time ago. I got my Birger mount about six weeks ago and it is still a very exciting, if incomplete invention. It's always been hassle to wait - first for the camera now the controller but every so often the spirit that has driven the Red project finds a way forward.

Delighted that the path to Epic will not be impeded by the Birger but I'm actually still more interested in RedOne than anything that might be on the horizon. I'm looking forward to greeting the New Year with armed with Red/Birger/Canon camera system. It great!

Thanks Jim J.,

All the best Erik and have great Christmas (oops) "Holiday".

This might interest those living in EU who have already got the tracking number from Birger but the mount itself has not been shipped. FedEx told me this morning that they are not able to check whether the question is of a rael package of ghoast package. Once somebody submits the package data to FedEx pages, the FedEx system starts to process the customs and VAT invoice at the Netherlands for all packages coming to EU. And, they said the customer should inform FedEx that the question is a ghoast shipment.

This is to say, all of you living in EU region and having received the tracking number in November will receive the same invoice as I did in the near future. Cancelling the invoice is not as trivial as one may think. Bureaucracy, you know ....

Amy, and I will be taking the remainder of the week off for the holidays. I will be back in the office on Monday 29 December. I have really enjoyed all of the telephone conversations with customers these past few days. Though it does take some time away from production and engineering, I agree that it is time well spent, as these calls and these customers, are the reason the product even came into existence in the first place.

Jarred and I keep missing each other on the phone, so I will not have any further comment on the warranty topic until I return.
