  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

1. You would install the mount or have a 3rd party certified location install the mount.

2. Each mount instillation would be documented and visible to RED.

This is the first I think any of us (end users) are hearing of this. There has got to be a better way, Jarred.

Could I become a "3rd Party Certified Location" and would I need to document to RED every time I swapped my own mount to keep the warranty clear?

I can accept that if I pinch and fry a wire, then its not covered under warranty and I'll pay to fix it, but I don't want to lose my warranty and upgrade path to Epic because I'm using my camera with a Canon mount that RED said would exist long ago. Shit, this is really fucking annoying.

Ps., Don't take this as an attack on you personally, Jarred. I know you guys have your interests to watch out for, as does Birger. Its just frustrating being a customer stuck in the middle of RED tape, and a purchase that has gone on more than a year, and now with potentially even more delays and unseen caveats.

Waiting for solution

Waiting for solution

Unless you live down the street from Eric, and he changes mounts for you every week, and you can afford that service, it's game over.

I hope that someone can come up with a solution for this problem. I'm sure Erik is working and trying to sort this out now.

BUMMER. I guess you just killed the Birger dream.
I really feel  now.

Oliver

It's a bummer Red, and Jarred, has kept totally quiet about the installation conditions for the the past few months, seemingly leaving it to Birger to tell it's customers.

Does Curt at Viewfactor know about this? It's going to impact on him big time.

I repeat. . . the end of the Birger thread is near.

Stephen

OMG! This thread with all its ramifications is becoming unbelievable.

We seem to be left with two options which do not sound that likely:

i) RED installs the mount simultaneously with the audio hardware update,
ii) This 3rd party certified location can be arranged in a reasonable way,

or then

iii) cancel the order and wait till Andy's mount is available.

I'm sure anyone with an installed mount probably feels some ire, but then again - the warranty is only one year anyway, so you're probably not losing much...

Not really, since you also loose your upgrade path to Epic, and that's a much bigger lost!

Just to put this in perspective, I have Red One #997, and my warranty will expire in 90 days. When is your warranty up?

I see that Kyle has #1163. Mark has #228, and #1340. Oliver has #2460 (okay, so maybe this is more meaningful to Oliver :)).

I guess the more worrisome thing is that Red is giving a vote of no-confidence on user installation... if there's a risk of frying the camera, it'd be good to understand the exact circumstances.

Personally, I don't think voiding the warranty is a deal-breaker - in 90 days, the warranty will be meaningless for me. I can see it being more of an issue for recent purchases, or if Red offers an extended warranty.

Jarred, Are you talking seriously or is this some sort of early Alzheimer?

This is what you've said earlier in July or August:

"At this point we are prepared to move forward with this.. I am pleased to announce that the Birger mount will not void the global camera warranty with the modifications Erik has done.

Note though.. that any parts damaged from a potential electronic malfunction directly caused by the mount will not be covered.. and things like breaking the adjustable PL of the mount on removal/installation will not be covered ( since it never was designed to be removed)

Because of the removal of the adjustable section is required, the Birger mount will not be RED Certified, but I think alot of you will be happy with the fact that it does not void your global camera warranty."

That's the way I remember it. I specifically didn't cancel my order when I found out damage from improper installation would not void the rest of the camera.

Tim, that's not the stake. The issue is really about loosing the option to upgrade to Epic X.

I just don't get why installing the mount ourselves would void the warranty. I totally get that if you break something, it would not be fixed under warranty, totally reasonable. But what if everything is fine?

Maybe if you want to keep track of who installed it themselves, we could "register" our mount with RED (or via Birger), so you guys keep tracks of user installation. Just saying.

Christmas wish.... I hope Birger, Viewfactor and RED are all on the phone right now happily figuring out a solution to all this. I have the greatest respect for all three of you, and this combination was/is my dream!!!

I wish for this almost as much as a sleep function on the RED....

Wonder what are all those "lucky" guys who have received and already installed the Birger mount going to say when they realize their upgrade path to Epic is lost. Akube is the lucky one. He received the mount but had to return it as due to a fault.

In addition to all customer this must be quit shocking news to Erik and Curt as well.

Guys.. I am sorry this was not communicated to you.. I havn't heard anything about it either myself, since we had the face to face meeting way back when and the terms where agreed.

Unfortunately this is part of the struggle when we enter this kind of grey territory, I understand why most companies just stay away from it.

And we arn't just picking on Erik because we really believe he makes a great product.. this is the policy that applies to all others that modify the RED camera beyond a certain point.

Jarred - I don't quite get what you're saying. Why were the terms not made public???????
