Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Canon L-series 85mm Prime Lens Focus Control!!! :)

Canon L-series 85mm Prime Lens Focus Control!!! :)

Great news!! The manual focus ring on the Canon 85mm now fully functions!!!
Here is the latest lens library #18:
http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6149&highlight=birger&page=435
After downloading the lens library, you will have to to perform an [update firmware] on the Birger software.
Simply engage the lens focus motor by pressing the bottom two buttons at the same time on the Birger mount while the lens is in MF mode.

If you can only buy one L-series prime, I say get the 85mm! We have all of the L-series glass, but my favorite is the 85mm.

These Imperos will be upgradeable (through ViewFactor) to use their longer range radio and receiver, as well as to control their motors. (i.e. ZOOM! your SLR lenses).

May I ask best reasonable way about How can I upgrade BirgerImpero to Impero Standard.

I have ordered RED One Motor Package also.

Now I will have 2 Impero conrtoller. I need not 2 controller:bleh: .

Do I must ask for get rid of Impero to VewFactor first, And after having BirgerImpero with my mounts from NY,Do I must
send it back to LA from long distance country like as Japan?

I would like to ask both company thinking about some program for customer's convenience.

regards

Erik, I'm having some trouble with my mount. It's been a little spotty since I got it; often times a lens works fine, but other times the same lens won't respond at all electronically. This morning I was on a shoot and took an exterior shot with my 24-70mm, and since it was bright I had to stop it down considerably with the mount. Then I went inside for another shot with the same setup and I couldn't increase my aperture size. I tried rebooting the camera, taking off and reattaching the lens, etc., but nothing worked. I had to end up scrapping the shot because it was too dark to be usable. Do you know what could be causing this?

Also, I just discovered that my Peleng fisheye lens with a Canon housing doesn't actually fit on the Birger Canon mount. I'm sure it's the rehousing company's fault for not getting the tolerances exactly right, but I'm just kind of bummed about it. (Fits fine on my Canon SLR.) So if anyone was thinking about getting a Canonized Peleng -- don't!

Spoke to Curt around midnight last night, and bring up of the production Impero boards was going well. He said something about all of the changed hardware, power and rs232 for the Birger interface, was working, and working well. He mentioned something about trying to get some footage up today. I have not received my production Impero, but I think it will be here tomorrow. That west coast fedex cutoff is just so early...

On the phone with the machine shop this morning, and there were some minor features that weren't read correctly off the updated drawing. Should have first part this afternoon or tomorrow. The setup for the radial holes (pushbuttons, lemos, etc) is not done yet, so parts are starting to pile up from the first two operations. Realistically parts should go into the tanks at the plater monday morning, which allows us to resume shipping around wednesday.

Film Star Rentals in Southie (Boston) is loaning us their camera on Monday and Tuesday, so I can reshoot the assembly instructions time lapse on a camera that already has the i/pins upgrade. They are running weekly RED introductory seminars, and at the next one (after today) we will probably take ten minutes to do a demo of the mount and Impero combo.

The next few days will be used to keep moving forward with the radio stuff for the Impero.

I am going to ask anybody that may be having challenges with their existing mounts to hold tight for a couple of days, as we will be provifing an upgrade to all existing customers to the newest version of the RED camera adapter for the mount, and we will address any issues at that point.

Soon after I get that first part from the machine shop, and first Impero from Curt, we will get an all customer email out explaining the changes.

If you had a Canon EOS body you could have set aperture with that, but you probably didn't I'm guessing.

Roger that, no prob. Thanks!

Yeah, I know the trick, but I didn't bring the SLR body with me. It was just me this morning, and I already had to lug a bunch of equipment for a jib shot. (Not to mention the "RED's worth" of jib counterweights! :weight_lift:)

Sigh ... 373 days in the line and once again another delay and at least another week if it even is there before Christmas ... sigh ... 373 days and still going ... anyhow, thanks a lot for the update.

Joe, Sorry to hear about you Birger problems. We've been pretty lucky with ours I guess.

Just to know, we have a Peleng Canon mount as well which works just fine with the Birger.

Just so you know. You're not alone. We had the same problem with our 8mm Peleng. I actually took a Dremel and ground off a tiny amount from each of the three keyed parts of the lens. It now fits. If you try this, be careful and take it slow.

I guess we were just lucky with our Peleng 8mm as well but I very much admire the Dremel spirit. I know I would have been in there with some tool or another as well if ours hadn't quite fit.

delivery?

delivery?

Don't know how others are faring, but I'm having to fend off a very pissed off accounts dept who do not wish to try to justify this "outstanding" (ie, incomplete) purchase to our accountants... months after payment has been made.
Sorry, but this has gone well beyond justification of how "great" this product is going to be...... and its getting too hard to just sit here quietly!
Lets get some real dates, please!!! :ranting2:

Thanks, David and Frank. I'll try the Dremel trick. It's such a great little lens, and at various crop levels (2k-3k) I can envision it serving as a handy ultra-wide with just the right amount of distortion for a cool effect.

Here's your Birger buzz for today..... Theres about three days more coding to get everything cleaned up but essentially we have the Impero talking to the Birger Mount. As soon as Erik receives his unit from us tomorrow he can start integrating his Bluetooth and go wireless direct to the mount.

EDIT: This one has a litle better lighting to see the scale on the lens...

hi curt,

your control looks great.

is this the only thing delaying the delivery of the birger mount now, or are there other problems with the mount itself still?

it's been months since i received my tracking email.....

cheers,

david

I just had my morning phone call with the machine shop. I am not particularly happy right now, as it looks like we will not have the first 20 parts going to plating until tuesday afternoon or wednesday morning.

There are four operations on the most complicated part: top and bottom (done together, parts flipped halfway through), drill and tap side holes on a 4th axis, and cut collimation thread in a lathe. There are about 20 sets of parts through the first set of operations, the fixture for the third operation is is still be built, and the fourth operation is already set up. The less complicated parts are flying through the lathe.

There are two sources of delay:
  1. The first pair of operation was only yeilding about 50%, as taps were "inexplicably" breaking. With some sleep, they realized that one hole wasn't being drilled deep enough, and it was programmer error.
  2. As they got started they were thinking through fixturing, and there were some delays associated with executing that fixturing. There are a lot of parts to be made, and cycle time and accuracy are issues that needed resolution. The first pair of operations takes 20 minutes, and the other operations a negligible amount of time in parallel, so our maximum throughput is about 100 parts per week. This is somewhat less than I was expecting. There is still some opportunity to speed this up.
We shipped the 300th lens mount of the new design on friday of last week. We are happy with the stability of the lens mount, we are just trying to push the red camera adapter through the machine shop. We are using this time to partial assemble what we can, and work on some new software features, and integration with the Impero.

I will wait a day or two to offer schedule, as I want to get the first new parts in my hands to understand that every last machine shop issue has resolved, and get final time study. Shop says we might only be running at 60% speed on potions of the 20 minute phase. Preliminarily, we are looking at mounts starting to roll at the end of this week, with some real volume next week.
