  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Akube,

unbelievable.

If you don't know how to do it then just do not even touch it or try to do it in any case.

Sent your camera to RED and probably they would do it with extra charge.

look on Acube location..........

Also for underwater the Birger mount is the safer, remote and computer control!
I can have AC with me down there and all is very reasonable size.

But when you get these screws stuck how can you remove them without drilling, professional or not?

Lauri,

Akube was right, I have talked a lot. It takes a lot of time to write these, what I thought were thoughtful posts. Apparently, with regard to RED, it has been a waste. It is probably better to refocus that time and energy on the long overdue update of my website, and listen to my other customers and finish the design of my PRO Aluminum housing for the Sony PVW-EX1.

Aqua,

you have been a rock solid influence here and your presence has been great. Jarrad has made it known that they are willing to get back to the drawing board which is a great step. Sure we had a heated moment but for the sake of independent film, i think it's time to refocus on the solution. One day we will look back on this and laugh.

You have also been at times the communication line between this board and Erik. Please understand that any thing said about Eriks communication techniques is not a criticism. He is a great engineer. Usually when your great at something you lack in other areas. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm sure Erik would agree this is an area that could do with some improvement. We have known from the start that he is just a small company but when you have 200+ units @ $1300 then yea, maybe it's time to employ extra people. We all saw how beneficial it was when amy came aboard. If she was there in January then this thread would be half the size and confidence twice as strong. Erik also could have any one of us give him an update on what was happening here, weekly or whatever. Maybe throw a unit their way or something and kept everyone in touch with developments and maybe put aside 1 hour a week to go over the communications with that said person and explained in a more concise way what was happening and answering specific questions that arise on this board. He could have applied Murphy's law which states that if you allow extra time for things to go wrong they usually don't but if you don't allow the extra time then they usually do. Perhaps he could have kept in touch with Red a bit more as well.

But, in saying that, i still think Erik has done a splendid job in his design process and he hasn't lost my confidence at any time. I applied Murphy's law on his behalf for myself so never have been angry about the delays.
We really went through the same thing with the red camera and in the end everyone was happy. So i'm sure red is understanding in respect.

This is make or break time. We either all become winners or we all become losers. If we fight and blame and war then we become losers. If we get together and make this happen we all become winners.

I second this motion.

We've come too far to let this fall apart and walk away. Let's all play our part to make this happen.

I recently purchased a 6k Canon EF lens, the EF 200mm f/2L IS USM, so I say lets give Erik some credit and RED the time to figure this out, as I do believe it is in all our best interest for this to work, personally I'm not wiling to loose the electronic control of the Canon EF lenses, as that is what makes the Birger Mount stand out from the rest, and in lenses such as the Super Speed and FX lens EF 85mm f/1.2L only works with electronic control.

But really look forward for a solution.

Yes Ketch,

I agree Birger is not A solution for EF lenses, it is THE solution. And no matter what may come, Birger will be on my Red cameras. When you compare quality of image, control of the focus and weight between convetional cine lenses and EF then it is clear that Birger is as revolutionary to digital cinema as Red. It is this combo that will rock the indie world and earn the ire of the studios.

Thanks Mark for agreeing, however, the Birger solution it is far more then just the best solution for Indie FilmMakers, it is the only solution for an ultra light weight set up and a super speed lens of outstanding quality such as the 85mm f/1.2, no other lens compares to it, for what it does, and it is the only lens been pitched on a Multi Million dollar shoot which has several scenes that take place in natural lighting, well with a few LEDZ fixtures, were do to weight limit the MP can't be used.

Lets hope that the guys @ RED and Erik, figure out a solution, as well as my tough goes out to Erik, which by now He is out several $$$ and many hours of work.

Erik, you still have my support my friend, I know you can do it!

Ketch,

I have the 85mm 1.2 as well and have been using the first generation Birger prototype since January, of course my 85mm 1.2 will not focus with out power and only Birger's new electronic mount will do the trick. I am salivating over the thought of getting this new mount.

you should Mark,

if you see what this baby has been doing on my 1Ds III, you'll be blown away, can't show anything as yet, NDA, but will do soon.

The EF 85mm f/1.2L II and the EF 200mm f/2L IS are now my absolute favor it lenses of the entire Canon EF line up, off course the EF 14mm f/2.8L II also is mind blowing but for what I do with Portrait the two previously mentioned are just nothing short of stunning, and can't wait to see some Cinematographic scenes shot on RED with this two babies!

We clearly need a positive resolution to this situation. Anything short would be bad for everyone involved. Too many dreams rest on this solution.

It should be an interesting week.

Guys, please, knock it off! No more teasing us with these obscene thoughts of fancy fast glass controlled by an intelligent assembly of advanced electronics... OK?

I just bought and shot a spot with a tokina 11-16 2.8. This lens is very cheap to buy at under $600 but it has awsome optical and mechanical build quality. I will post some stills tomorrow. I was blown away by this EF lens.

you guys worry too much.. I'm sure erik is almost done his modifications, and as I mentioned earlier there are more options coming to market. Everyone will be happy soon.. 3rd parties need to start communicating with us better, and of course, there are a few things we could do better as well.

Everyone relax a little... you all should be used to delays by now :) heh heh heh.

So I logged on, and there were several very nice PMs. One contained this line:

"This situation will sort itself out. There's a time to die on a hill and this ain't it yet.

Watch out for akube though, that guy kills sheep." Which made me laugh. (It's a reference to an earlier Akube post.)

And then I saw Akube's post over here, which made me smile too because ironically if he had been installing a Birger mount he wouldn't have had the problem. #206 was one of the 1st batch (remember that photo of 200 cameras on shelves waiting for the new mount?) where the screws were literally fused into the mount and there was a rumor/joke that it was Jarred with his superhuman strength (I'm 6' 5" and Jarred's bigger than me) that torqued them in. But since we didn't need to remove the actual PL to mount Birger we found that you could just completely remove the side lock screws and pull it apart (the RED mount is actually at least 3 pieces) uncovering the four main screws and remove it.

Although this method wouldn't have helped Akube in removing the eight PL screws, he could have taken the PL/mid portion off and away from the camera so when he drilled out the screws he wouldn't risk slipping and drilling the OLPF or sensor or getting all the those metal shavings down in there. So if you need to install a Nikon, Birger, or whatever and you have the stuck PL screws you can just remove those side screws - of course then you are into a warranty grey area since you are past the PL and removing part of the adjuster.

Akube, earlier you made me think I might be spending too much time here, so now I'm blaming you for bringing me back!

supernova I think you're right - I boiled over a bit. I know Jarred is a big man in more than just size, so we can probably get it back together over time. And I think we will laugh, and maybe it is time to move this thread into its humor phase as we approach 2000 posts, and the ultimate end game: working, shipping mounts!

PS added: Jarred, missed your post while I was writing mine. I'll stop worrying and chill out. Apologies, man.

Talking about relaxing:calm: ... were are the XXX surprises you mentioned Jarred?:whistling:

the only way on earth to remove those screws is by getting a machine screw driver.. and litterally drilling out the screws... the screws give off these lovely little very sharp curved metal leftovers and brushed metal powder that so beautifully smear the sensor area. now the thing is... even if you put a tank infront of your sensor.. the brushed metal is so minute and gets stuck anywhere (even if you use air compressors to blow em out.. wana smear your sensor glass with sharp brushed metal.. please use arctic butterfly) you will still get em no matter what u use to blow.
Maybe you can suck up the metal shavings using a strong magnet? Even microscopic metal particles will stick to a magnet.

I was thinking about magnet, but strong magnet near the 5 micron photo sensing sites and fast reading transistors, better check with RED if it is OK.
I had funny patterns once on the LCD exposed to the strong magnets. Couldn't get rid of it for a few weeks. Finally it went away.

Michael is right, for the Birger mount the mid section should be taken out first, this makes the unscrewing part less tricky, especially on the mounts with stuck screws.

I hope that Erik will come up with some instructional video with close-ups of the best way to do it.
