  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Knob progress update will come early next week. We have put this on a back burner given that 90% of our customers have said that they would prefer to have their mounts shipped as soon as available, rather than wating for complete delivery of the knobs.

Can you pull focus without a knob?

Jason, the truly cheapest way is to make a few friends with RED cameras and share some gear or tips or opportunities...shouldn't be hard in LA.

RED users seem pretty friendly and willing.

That's sort of what I was thinking... might put out a post and see. Thanks.

Erik, this new delay is a killer. It sounds like you've got a bunch of the machined mounts laying about -- how much would you charge for one? No cables, no circuit boards, just something I can stick on my camera to use my Canon lenses until you get all these electronic issues sorted out. Please!!

Yeah, that's sounds like an interesting, inexpensive option, Erik. Just the cost of shipping on our dime. I just want to stick my canon lenses on my camera right now.

Will that work? Ship a canon mount to us and we'll ship it back when you've got everything settled and ready to modify it? I don't care if it's a dumb mount at first.

Erik, can we do this?

I'm not even sure he'll read this... but people are saying they can't get through the phone?

Anyone out there with the phone number to the bat phone in the bat cave willing to ask Erik for us?

Depending on the price, I'd be willing to buy the unfinished mount in addition to the smart mount (i.e. no worries about sending it back).

I'm in for the dumb mount too. nice backup actually. you could shoot wide open at least.

I dont know what to say. I'll move from the stupid 10% to the smart 90% thou. I still dont want to know how painful in the ass focusing without a knob will be but i'll jump on the "here and now" (well, here and next week...) bandwagon.
I'm a 107, noboby will surpass me.

I guess I should too. I'm a 107 that wanted to wait for the knob because the indication was the knob would be done NOW and the units would ship a couple weeks ago.

Now I'm just confused.

Are we talking 2 months for knobs? They are still being designed? That means off to production, QC, shipping, packing and shipping to us. 3 weeks minimum? Anyone waiting for a Nikon mount should just order a dumb mount from RED cause I'm wagering 6-9 months before you see that one.

Or set the aperature on an SLR and then take it off and mount it. This is how you do it with the other dumb mounts.

I was just about to say the minimum of a "dumb" mount would be to at least set the aperture. If Erik can confirm this method would work, then I'm up to buying one too. Erik, if you can keep the "dumb" mounts cheap enough, I think people would get it just for backup emergency usage while the send in their smart mount for servicing, etc.

Anybody can take a guess? How much does it cost of producing a dumb mount? And factor in time and shipping... how much?

(Of course, having the option of upgrading your backup dumb mount would be nice... and more business for you Erik).

I'm really glad now that I bought the Red 18-50 to get me through until the Birger is finally available.

Jeez, rub it in why don'tcha...

He's right. I waited forever it seems to get my RED due to no SLR solutions. Finally decided to grab the Nikon dumb mount for what I thought would be a week or two of playing. It's been close to 3 months now. We saw a working Birger 2 months ago and still no one has a working unit with a knob. And now it's all being reworked (thankfully - sounds like good improvements). And what about the wireless stuff?

I'd be one of the first to complain, but in this case I'm not going to. The delay appears quite legitimate, and I would rather the mount work with ALL lenses than just the ones that happen to have low power requirements.

Given the situation though, the idea of being able to purchase a very inexpensive dumb Canon EF mount is a pretty good idea. And, we're talking DUMB mount... no electronics to control anything - no aperture control, nothing but the physical mount to connect the Canon lens to the Red body. If we need to change aperture, we can bring along an extra Canon SLR body. It's a band-aid solution, but it would get the job done.

To me, getting a dumb mount without the knob is not a solution I would even consider. The knob is vital. Yes, I'm in the dumb 10%. But if the delivery dates for the mount keep slipping away and the knob continues to be in the back burner, instead of asking for the dumb mount to get me by, I may just cancel the order and go with the P+S Technik IMS, Impero and Inclino solution instead.

Luckily, I have an FD mount and a few FD lenses to get me by, but that was not the original plan. And I don't want it to become a permanent solution on account of having to wait for a complete order.

I'll hang until the end of the month. If nothing's changed and the prospects for timely delivery of a complete product are as slim or worse than they are now, I'll be bailing and moving on. No harm, no foul.

im sorry guys... how do you set up the aperture on a canon slr and take the lens off... the darn lens stays open all the time?! and only closes when you hit the shutter release. as soon as you shut ure canon off.. the aperture goes back to being open.

I'm up for a dumb canon ef mount and im up for sending it back when birger gets ready with its new mount and its knob. ill send my dumb mount back when they are both ready.

And Erik.. i seriously like the power being enough for *all* lenses.

FD lens? I still have my old AE-1 with it's original 50mm. I can put that on my Red if I get an FD mount? I checked the i-net for this FD mount and came up with a few hits, but I wasn't sure which one. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.
