  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Lost Idata

Lost Idata

I just loaded build 20 and lost all iData. Anyone else with a Birger/EOS having the same problem with build 20?

Sorry to hear that. I was waiting for feedback on 20 before loading it up.

Maybe I'll wait a while. Let us know how it goes and if you get it back.

We changed the i-data protocol in build 20 to fix some Cooke lenses issues... that could be whats happening to you guys, but thats just a guess.

the protocol will change over the next couple builds for sure.. Priority goes of course to the "real" i-data products.

Birger boot issue

Birger boot issue

We think these issues are related to the lens data interface. If people want to help with this, I need to know which combinations of the following items work and don't work:

  • RED: 18.3.6.4 -or- 20beta
  • Birger: 19x -or- 19z
  • Units: English -or- Metric

RED and Birger both changed i/data interface in both of these releases. I have a hunch that unit selection is playing into the problem, because not everybody is having the issue. We stripped some of the i/data protocol in 19y/19z to get some ROM space back. We eliminated commands that the previous versions of camera software did not issue. I do not have access to a test camera for another couple of days.

Erik,

Red 20.0.0 and Briger lens library 19x and metric units seems to work out.

At least all troubles I had seem to disappear with combinations Red 18.3.6.4/Birger 19y and Red 20.0.0/Birger 19y once rolled back to library 19x. Tested and changing resolution or toggling audio channels on and off cause no longer the sensor to freeze.

Ouch...

ha ha ha... no ouch intended.. just reality. The Birger i-data reporting is a hack, everyone knows that... just like the actual mount is somewhat a hack... a wonderful, great, ass-saving hack.

The Birger mount we approved is based on that trouble-capable ipin connector being tucked away safely inside with no electrical connection, so of course if these new mounts that are plugged into the i-pin cable, if they blow something up your on your own (obviously)

Dont panic though.. Erik is pretty smart on protecting things.. we havn't had any problems that I know of come in because of the i-pin mounts hooked up.. But I would suggest with each build change that you guys ask Erik first before you upgrade in case something changes on our side that could affect in a negative way things.. just to be sure.

This week's release includes a *disable*RED*support* button in the GUI. Click this and all we draw is power from the camera. No GPIO inits, no i/data, nothing. This way customers can stay up to date with the newest Impero and lens support, and stay up to date with the camera software.

Red 18.3.6.4/Birger 19x: ok
Red 20.0.0/Birger 19y: no idata
Red 20.0.0/Birger 19x: no idata
all metric

So just to check, the basic warranty position is now; if you fit the Birger mount you're covered, provided a) you meet the requirements on the order form and b) any damage caused IS NOT attributable to the Birger i-data implementation.

Cant really answer that one Karl.. the mount today is much different than the mount we approved... kinda puts everyone in a grey area.. specially since all these changes happened without any sort of notice or visibility to RED.

I just wrote Erik with some feedback from using the Birger in the field the last few weeks. I thought I'd post a little here in case it is useful info for anyone...

...I just returned from a few weeks in the Idaho backcountry, using the Red powered from solar, and the Birger mount with the following lenses and following findings:

Sigma 300-800 plus 1.4x and 2x; Used this lens the most (friggin beast to backpack though...) very happy with it, with extenders. Holds focus great, though when you switch ND filters (internal 46mm drop in) it doesn't hold focus at all. Need to do some checking on getting a matched set of ND/clear then columating to the filters, then see where we end up. ISSUES: minor, but doesn't report the focal length accurately with extenders. Starts correctly (ie. 600mm @ 300+ 2x) then as you zoom, around 800mm starts to read 96mm, etc. But oddly, focal length worked perfect before I went into the field when I was testing it.... Also, this lens pulls too much power for my camera aux port when trying to focus it, since I don't have a knob yet this isn't an issue, but when I do I'll need a D-tap cable for it.

Canon 150-600, Optex universal mount, Les Bosher made me a universal to dumb Canon EF mount. Works great, no electronics.

Canon 100-400 Not used much yet, tested fine, Good and sharp, a little softer at 400. aperature shifts as you zoom

Canon 28-300 Tested but didn't keep. Great range, not as sharp as other lenses (though quite possibly sharp enough?) Didn't hold focus well, but not terrible either. aperature shifts as you zoom. Expensive, sent it back, but wish I had it at times.

Canon 24-105. Works well, tested 4 lenses, never found one that "holds focus" quite like I'd like, but oh well. Good optics, good range

Canon 10-22. Good for a wide. Holds focus so, so, mechanics so, so, real bugger that the aperature shifts as you zoom, but oh well for now

Been using the mount in the field in all weather, rain, snow, sun. Very impressed!

I've got to give a huge plug for the Birger mount, its great, and Erik is sharp! He also seems very committed to this and has been taking in different lenses, testing them and optimizing the mount and software for them. - thanks Erik!

I really hope Red is working with him now/soon so that he can be on top of Scarlet/Epic before/when they are released.

in case any of that helps...
