  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Erik,

Thanks for the update. Good luck with the development, and I hope to see my lens mount soon.

Erik:

I asked this on email over a month ago and didn't get a response, so Ill try here.

The free bluetooth remote requires you order one of each of the items on the sheet. Any chance I can just get two knobs instead of the Red One camera cable and still qualify for the free remote? I'm using the Birger mount on a Brevis35 and I don't need the cable.

Me too i'm going out. To Seville this week end... you better pick your money from my Visa soon Erik...

thank you for the update, erik. a lot of us with high hopes pinned to this mount....

it's been a little difficult and nerve-wracking to fax credit card info into the void, with no confirmation of its receipt. i hope you can move the processing of reservations along.

Still Frame 35mm 1.4

Here is a still from a TV spot I just shot using a Birger prototype mount and a Canon 35mm 1.4 lens at 1.4.

I have a panasonic HD 8.4 inch monitor that has a zoom in function. So, I used the user 2 monitor zoom on the red along with the panasonic monitor zoom in function and the focus was super easy. Also this lens almost has no breathing. I'll be posting a lot more soon. Wait until you see larger files of this. Really great.

All,

I've been working with the predecessor to this new Birger controller for a while now and I can tell you that Erik does understand everyone's expectations and he'll meet all of them I'm sure.

I have mine mounted on a Redrock Micro35 / HVX combo using a home-made computerized controller. This hand held controller uses a Basic Stamp computer and three different programs: direct control, programmed move, and snap. Programmed move works well for dolly in shots while snap will move between three focus points as fast as the mounted lens is capable of. It's fun stuff...

In terms of lenses, a little feedback:

The mid-priced ($300) 50mm 1.4 makes beautiful images BUT the motor is not smooth AND the image jumps when focus direction is reversed due to the lens group moving in the barrel. Not usable, which is a major letdown cause the image is that good. If you want primes in the 35mm and 50mm sizes you will have to get the L series glass (the mid-priced 35mm F/2 is supposed to be lacking in build quality and performance).

The 24-70mm F/2.8L zoom reviews well, but I'm not convinced that it will be able to create the brokeh that digital cinema is looking for. I am planning on a two camera shoot this summer (HVXs / Micro35s) and I may rent this lens for the secondary camera.

Working with the mid-priced ($300) 85mm 1.8, and it looks good. Looking at reviews it would seem that the 85mm F/1.2L is a waste of money as the performance is so close between the two. The L lens is actually more prone to lens flare.

The mid-priced 28mm F/2.8 is supposed to be good but I haven't bought one yet. I might forgo the purchase if I rent the 24-70mm as that lens would be used to capture the master shots.

Finally the 'Must Have' lens is actually the 100mm F/2.8 Macro! I'll be getting this lens as I will be shooting some models that I want to look 'life size'. The range might make it a bit tricky as some of it I want to shoot on an upward angle:

If you haven't found it yet, here is one of the best resources for Canon lens reviews: http://www.wlcastleman.com/equip/reviews/index.htm. It doesn't have all the details that a cinematographer would want (breathing, barrel movement), but it's great when concerning the image itself.

Just bought that a few weeks ago - having a good time with it for sure. I also picked up the 35mm 1.4 - Canon glass is very nice and I'm looking forward to the mount.

Great news Erik,

looking forward to put my Canon glass to work on my girls.

Sheltie guy, good shoot and to take in consideration that the lens you used is one of the best Canon L primes to date.

Bob Gruen,

white papers and lab tests do make good points and refer well to the lens CA, Flare resistance and other technical and important aspects of any lens.

Nonetheless the specific review of the 85 1.8 vs. the 85 1.2L is widely inaccurate, more so now with the new 85 1.2L II ( one that I have ) the resolution power of this lens wide open is about the best out there, of any other 85mm lens, the Bokeh that this FX lens produces however, it stand in a class of its own.

So for those that can't afford to purchase thos lens they can surely go with the good 85 1.8, but don't aspect to get even close to the 85 1.2L II.

The two photos below are from LART, and shot wide open at 1.2, please do note that this have not been modified from their RAW format and were shot as candid photos with available light only. No color correction or any Post has yet been done to the photos, they also have been heavily compressed to post here.

However the two simple shots show clearly the Isolating power of this lens.
