  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Canon Demo @NAB/REDuser party

Woo hoo! I had absolute faith, but it's great to hear the early unanimity of praise. Erik, you absolutely have created the second most important piece of gear in this puzzle, behind only the camera itself.

Yes it does!!!

And it is not only a sexy piece of gear that looks great on the RED, but it is so very smooth, extremely smooth, I love it and I know this will remain in my kit for a very long time, and the Canon "L" glass will do just fine till the RED Primes and the 18-85 will come home.

Great job Erik, and it was a great pleasure to finally get to meet you.

Ciao

It's for real.

It's for real.

I spent a good hour twiddling the knob with different lenses. The mount does what it was promised to do. Still some limitations (adjustable tension to be added, no readout of the aperture until Red enables this feature, half stop iris adjustments) but these things will be addressed in time - I certainly would have been happy to walk away with this demo model. The only real limitation of the system, it seems, is the limitation of the lenses themselves, which was evident on some of glass present. But overall, this will provide great options for a lot of people, including me:)

I believe the aperture adjustments are 1/4 stops

Thank you everyone. Looking forward to that interview, Haskell. Anyone take some pictures?

I have more questions of course, like which lenses were tested and approved (and which weren't)? How noisy is the motor (probably too noisy at the party for that, but maybe Erik can answer)?

Sounds like great news. Well done Erik!

Yeah that's it. That's what we all need till the glass war is over.
Till there is enough glass around at at good pricepoint.
So that's a great start.
Thanks for this option guys you realy did a great job.

Tim

so it's official ...

so it's official ...

Excellent news all ... thanks for updating those of us unable to make NAB ;-(
Well done Erik ... another small revolution gets going.

Can somebody post a summary ? What works now and what will work in future (via future firmware updates ?) What Canon lenses did get tested (even if briefly) ? Is the aperture control 1/2 or 1/3 or 1/4 stop 'click' ? etc ...

The big question next ... when are the Canon mounts starting to ship ?!?!?!

Cheers

PS : anybody take any pics ?

TWO important questions

TWO important questions

1. When is the darn thing going to ship? I'm facing a REAL time constraint here.

2. Someone above mentioned that some of the lenses didn't work as well. Which lenses didn't work as expected? And what were the problems?

I really am counting on this. . . I'm dead if it doesn't ship REALLY soon.

Stephen

Great news about the mount! Did anyone pop in a CF card during the tests and get some footage they could share?

Thanks for the info guys! Any photos and/or specific lens information would also be greatly appreciated!

I spoke with Erik about the Nikon mount and he said at the earliest it would be eight weeks or so. He didn't sound too encouraging about it, so that left me wondering if it would materialize or not, meaning Nikon glass might only have the option of being used on a dumb mount.

What about EF-S lenses?

What about EF-S lenses?

Would about Canon's EF-S lenses - would those work as well since they were designed for smaller CMOS sensors?

Yes they will work on RED/BIRGER just fine and the 10-22 is a great zoom and the widest lens Canon makes.

On the note of lens limitations, this was do to the fact the each lens has different focusing minimum distances and the light was extremely poor on the table, and since the hotel was unable to provide Erik with a light, lens that were not as fast as the 50mm f/1.2 present were not as impressive n their image, very grainy, but this again had nothing to do with the Birger mount or the quality of the lens them selfs, there just was the need for more light, and more distance for the lenses such as the 70-200 zoom which needed more distance from the focused object.

...How noisy is the motor (probably too noisy at the party for that, but maybe Erik can answer)?

It utilises the motor built into every Canon EF lens, so that will determine the noise level. The USM lens motors are darn quiet! :sorcerer:

Doh! Of course! And I even knew that. Don't know what I was thinking. :)

So, perhaps people with Canon lenses could do a few tests regarding noise. I don't have a Canon body yet to do it myself.
