  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Big Resolution News...

It is a great news and a bad news. Now there is even bigger need for sharp (and expensive) glass. In particular, it will be difficult to reach the sensor resolution WFO.

I can see the difference even wide open.

I am continually stunned by the whole RED teams lack of willingness to let it be "good enough" and continually squeezing more and more out of the current technology and not making us, the customer, constantly shell out for the "newer, better, etc..." but providing it as a matter of course.

Kudos for setting the marks so high on what any customer should expect from any company.

thanks again.

Great news!!!
Jim,
Will other settings resolve the same? As I have RPPs and just want to know how to continually reach the same results as your MTF chart(I don't know the math but I can read the modulation chart)...In addition, I will gladly sacrifice my look around to get 4.1K measured resolution.

Thanks.

I think it's a good day for RED being able to leave the 3.2k measured resolution stigma behind them. Whatever the numbers equal out to the important thing is that both M and MX create beautiful imagery. That's really all I care about.

Full marks for questioning the hows and whys of the establishment.

Awesome!

I love how you guys are artists and scientists :-)

Exactly.

I have been avoiding posting about how insanely good the MX is - as it is hard to talk about and not come off sounding like an crazed fan. The latitude and overall image quality - color & resolution - are hands down awesome.

The F35, while having much lower res. (and we won't get into the science-project form factor), used to beat Red at lattitude and color, as well as its ability to do whip-pans. Now I think Red has beat it. So now we have the best digital camera in the world....

I challenge someone to name a cam that is actually better in any way (35mm film stocks do not count) than Red + MX and to name the way.

MTF plots

MTF plots

it still looks like things get a little shaky around the 3500 mark on the 4.5k graph... [...] But I was just wondering is all.

If you're curious, you can try making these kinds of plots yourself, with any kind of digital camera. You just need a resolution test pattern chart like the one shown on this page: http://www.normankoren.com/Tutorials/MTF5.html

When you plot out the result, you will typically see the response pattern get bumpy towards the upper end of the resolution range, due to the interaction between the fixed pixel grid spacing and the varying lines and spaces of the test chart. At least that's my interpretation. I've never seen such a response plot be entirely smooth. (If it was entirely smooth, I think that would mean your anti-alias filter was so strong that you'd loose a lot of potential MTF.)

Yes it has a new OLPF. Im not sure if thats the reason, but it looks a lot sharper.

I should think B4 posting. Theres no way the old OLPF could have ever let that amount of resolution though. Aliasing protection and the like.

Thank you Jim and the entire Red Team!

You are rewarded by your own excellence.

So then...

The 2/3" Scarlet will theoretically resolve closer to 2.6k then right (assuming the new number is about 85%)? Giving us the capability of a solid .6k to move around, punch in, etc.. for 2k/1080p delivery.

Love how you get so much more --of everything-- on top of what was already there, with the same light weight files.

The power of RAW. Everything we do to improve the back end applies to old footage. Some of the pickup in resolution is color science, including a new debayer.

About sharpness : I tried to find some ideas of settings on reduser but didn't find any. I know that it clearly depends on the picture itself, but I would just have an idea to avoid over-sharpening for devices I can't really check before, like 2k projection.

For instance, what would be the average setting in Photoshop if you had a 2k dpx ? I planned not to set any sharpness when outputting in Redcine-X the 4k dpx but instead sharpen the final image once reduced. Is this the good way of doing things or is it adviced to apply a little sharpness before ?

Thanks !

sharpness isnt everything - but softness isnt anything.

Great post
thanks so much

(now if Fed Ex would just deliver our MX on Monday !!!)

new debayer ?

new debayer ?

Congrats Red Team ! Again !

Now about this new debayer, is it available to us yet, if not when ?

Cheers,

Amazing news.

Looking forward to test resolution with M-X and some macro lenses from Leica and Canon.

"The rule of 500 for lens testing.

With the digitizing of the image (at first for scientific applications like astronomy)
powerful software could be used to amplify the weak signals to levels that can become useful
and convolution algorithms can even reconstruct blurred images into sharp(ish) pictures.

...

If you sit behind the lab equipment and see the numbers flash on the displays,
look at the graphs being printed and measurements being generated,
you cannot but feel impressed by the sophistication and expertise required for a truly in-depth review of a lens."
