  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Big New Canon Rumor - RAW Recording Module for 5D2 & 7D?

Oh, yes. That does sound quite clear and to the point.

So the questions will be:
_ Just how good will the RAW be?
_ How big will the files be?
_ Line skipping?
_ Only 1080p?
_ Will it handle 60fps?
_ Removable lenses?
_ APS-C?
_ Sensor size options?
_ Higher overcranking than 60fps?
_ Price?

The sleeping giant does seem to be yawning himself awake, but he needs to hurry up and down some coffee cause Red is already half way down this quarter mile. If Epic-X performs as reliably as studios demand, forget it. Red's buzz will increase, AND lose the "problematic" tag. I haven't heard of Oscar winners shooting on an XL-H1.

Red's prices for Scarlet are quite low already. Say Jim gets to sell Epic-X's and Fixed Scarlets for a year with only the 7D as a deterrent... that may be enough to allow him to price match whatever Canon puts out... and by then he may have Scarlet Cinema or even S35 Scarlet ready to go. And Canon might still not be able to quality match Red for an other year after that... even if at only 1080p, even if they move full steam ahead.

I wish we could see their balance sheets, cause this is more entertaining than TV.

So this guy seems to be confirming the RAW recorder, but not for the 7D and 5D2. I will have to wait till next week and see what my source says. Maybe the RAW unit is for prototype cameras and I missed that part of the story. Very interesting.

Yeah, it looks like that guy was talking about a new video camera module that will record RAW. He specifically said he had not heard of any RAW module for DSLR's, so what you heard about may be the same video camera option he mentioned. Then again, your source may know something the other guy doesn't about Canon's plans for their DSLR's.

@Roberto--Good questions. We'll have to wait and see what they're cooking up. My guess is that whatever it is, it will only do 1080p. I think Red is way ahead of the curve in the resolution department.

And in the Codec department. Don't forget that! :)

Take a look at Shawn's comparison between RC28, RC36 and RC42. It seems like the necessary RC's for 5k and higher will be able to remain very low after seeing how little change happens from RC28 to RC36 to RC42.

As to resolution, it seems it is become advantageous in real world application, beyond the obvious detail advantages after down sampling.

4k is eminent and Red is ready, now. 2k is practically 1080p and people need to see a significant difference or they won't go the the theater.

Canon can't even consider going 4k and appealing to large numbers. Not unless they get themselves some Red Code magic of their own.

Roberto, I will assume you are referring to HD Warrior, in the past I was known as DV Warrior and wrote "No Nonsense Reviews" on various DV camcorders so it seemed logical in these days of Hi Def that my blog is called HD Warrior. I do find it strange myself that this thread is all about Canon but it is about "Other cameras" and although I do not own one, RED cameras are taking the film world by storm.

I agree with everything except the shoulder mountability of the XL chassis. I owned an XL once and found the shape extremely constraining. Indeed, the shape of a Scarlet or any "smallish" box that can have mounting accessories added to it make it more versatile.
Good work though! Canon should pay close attention to your mock-up.

But how hard is it to create a REDCODE-like codec? I've heard REDCODE is a refinement of JPEG2000 (or Mjpeg2000). A very nice implementation to be sure - but is it really like alien technology?
 
How hard? Not easy at all. There's always a lot of gotchas and devils in the details. Also, remember that there's no off-the-shelf RAW codec. None of the standard codecs touch raw, and certainly not linear light data over a wide dynamic range. It's not alien tech, but it's certainly non-trivial at the very least and darn tricky at the worst!
