Hi all,

Just wanting to know if there is a official list of heavy duty on set / field monitors both small and large that use battery power as well as mains,
We have tried several with most of them not recognizing the non standard signals coming out of it.
As there are at least 3 vision out ports, Id like a monitor that could read any of the signals without the need of any conversion boxes.

I'm sure this has been asked many times, but I'm struggling to find a thread with the information I needed.

thanks guy (& gals)

Hi,

I am very happy with the 17" Panasonic BT-LH1700. On set I power it with 12 volt v-lock batteries, it has SD/HD-SDI inputs and a built in waveform. Note that it has no full HD resolution: 1280x768, but it scales down your HD signal. It has a noisy fan but you can switch it off.
I also use it's little 7.9" brother BT-LH80W (800x450). It has a waveform monitor built in as well, and a focus-assist.

You can have a look at the 20" Sony LMD-2050 (1680x1050), but it only runs on 24 volts strangely enough (and 100-220v of course).
The 8.4" LMD-9050 (1024x768) is a nice portable monitor with v-lock power, but it is native 4:3, so when shooting 16:9 you will never use a great part of the LCD.

TVlogic has a nice 7" monitor: LVM-071W. It has a v-lock connector and a built in waveform as well. They also produce 17" & 20" monitors, but I never used them.

Of course there are many more monitors out there (don't forget the CRT's for best quality!), but as far as picture, portability and 12 volt power the Panasonics are my favorites.

Hey, how long does that Panasonic last on the battery you use with it? (what is the wattage of the battery?)

Thanks,

Matthew

The Panasonic is rated at 4.5 amps and I use 160w Hawkwoods batteries. Theoratically, you should be able to use it for almost 3 hours, but I get 2-2.5 hours on one battery. The v-lock adaptor is not standard, it was put on afterwards connected with a 4pin XLR.

When I don't have to move around a lot I use a home-made powerhouse: a Pelican case with two 17 amp sealed led acid batteries. Then it runs for almost a day without charging, but it's heavy.

Yeah the Panasonic seems to be the workhorse all the rental houses are using. I've used a bunch of Panavisions' with the genesis and with the RED One. It works well, is super versatile (built in waveform, battery and AC powered). The only drawback is that it's heavy.....but that's what camera assistants are for.

The Panasonic BT-LH1700W is worth it's weight.
We use them for Director, DP, Focus Puller and Client.
We have outfitted ours with C-Stand mounts which allows for mobility.
It's a essential tool for RED production.

Thanks

ehhhhhhh...dude! What's your focus puller doing at video village!

Our focus puller is not at video village he is pulling from monitor.
We had 2 cameras on back of a gator. Our focus pullers are pulling focus remotely via Preston F.I.Z.

Panasonic BTLH-1700 light-stand mount

Panasonic BTLH-1700 light-stand mount

Check out Modern Studio Equipment's "Large LCD Mounting bracket".
This is a bolt-on heavy duty bracket which allows you to mount the Panasonic BTLH-1700 to either a regular 5/8" baby style grip post [the one on the top of any c-stand or baby light stand] or it can be used on any Junior light stand [if you unsrew the t-screw handle], its great & saves your monitor from an unstable magliner shelf!

Just giving you a ration of sh*t. Oh digital, changing the way focus pullers work. If an old timer ever caught one of his guys doing that he'd be done.

haha...It's good to see they still make the monitors thick enough to hold an Altoid tin! :sarcasm:

I love the Panasonic too!! It works perfectly with Red and I got a lot of very good feedback from directors, DP & clients.
